    My personal view is that the words "college" or "vocational college" don't fit well with the Finnish terminology.
    I know they are used in the context of study programs using English as the language of tuition or communicating with people from English speaking countries or even as marketing jargon, kind of.
    I still don't think it is good translation since the education system in Finland isn't so much based on the traditions of the English speaking world. The terminology in Finland has different roots and is based on different history and traditions. It has originally been influenced more by continental European and especially Germanic traditions.
    Oxford dictionary has this:
    "noun: college; plural noun: colleges
    1. an educational institution or establishment, in particular one providing higher education or specialized professional or vocational training.
    "colleges of further education"
    So from the British traditions point of view these terms are correct.
    But the word college doesn't exist in Finnish universities or Universities of Applied Science. Finnish higher education institutions have simply "osastot" or departments and not colleges. Also vocational education ammatillinen koulutus/ Ammattikoulu is simply "vocational or professional school" as direct translation to English.
    I prefer terminology based on the local terminology and tradition than anglicism.

    • @Ilona_Ke
      @Ilona_Ke  4 месяца назад

      Hello, you can also apply a course along your professional. Nurses are on high demand and job opportunities are more wider.
      To apply for cook, you first check the requirement for example language test, required documents and just apply using application form provided by the collage.

      Since the country is officially bilingual having two official languages, that alone seems to make your question about Finnish language unreasonable. In some jobs sufficient language skills of one or two official languages are legal or practical requirements.
      As an example: It would be dangerous, if medical or healthcare professionals couldn't understand their patients, each other or medical documentation.
      Legislation and common law is based on texts, which are in Finnish and Swedish. Working as a jurist in almost all jobs, you need to understand legal texts perfectly.
      Not all companies have Finnish or Swedish as their company language nor do all have just domestic clients. Many Finnish companies have international operations working and using many languages. Companies like Nokia and Kone have English as their company language.
      What has given you such prejudice ideas?

      Finland has legislation, which allows dual citizenships. It has citizens from most ethnic groups from all over, what makes you think they would be racist?
      Racism is such a politically loaded and outdated term that it's become impossible to know what people mean when they use the word.
      Unlike the USA Finland doesn't ask its citizens to choose what race they are.
      Things like native language and ethnic identity are more relevant. We have legislation protecting national languages but also minority languages and cultures. As an example I would use Sáme people, ingenious people, their culture and languages. It isn't without challenges, but minorities are recognized.

    • @just42tube
      @just42tube 7 месяцев назад +2

      There are some refugees in Finland, especially women, who have stayed home and never learned a local language. They have stayed in their own ethnic bubble without really integrating into the general society. Their children have been left in an awkward situation where there is a risk that they don't find a comfortable place for themselves in Finland and still Finland is their home. These parents have made life unnecessarily difficult for their children. If they would have learned language and been able to really support their children in the Finnish society they would have avoided many difficulties.
      Looking mostly only backwards and being not willing to adapt or change, life can become difficult for them and they cause trouble to others too.
