People keep commenting that there could be a truck behind you and rear end you. What if you're driving manually with that same truck behind you, and you come to an obstacle (say a car crash) and you manually stop fast? Will in that scenario the truck magically manage to break in time? Or will you pay more attention to what the truck behind you is doing and instead of braking, in order to avoid the truck rear ending you, you'll... deliberately hit the obstacle at maximum speed? You people are absurd. Your duty is to pay attention to the road ahead and make sure you don't crash in something. The same duty applies to any vehicle, including trucks. Can an automated system be better? I would make it so that you stop but also move into a free lane or onto the emergency lane (which is what I would do in the same scenario to be safe). But the truck must still maintain safe braking distance and if they don't, maybe we need an automated camera and police report system where your car would send videos of tailgating trucks to the police for hefty fees. Because honestly, truckers are real assholes more often than not.
