- Dr. J.: Hi, John! Are you all ready for “Bring Your Pet to Work” day?
JR: No. I’m looking for my lost pet.
Dr. J.: What is it?
JR: A bearded dragon. He jumped off the table and ran away.
Dr. J: Wow! Like dragons that can fly? Big, scary ones?
JR: No, he’s not a mythical dragon. He’s a scary-looking huge brown and orange pet bearded dragon.
Dr. J.: Wonderful! This can be a good grammar lesson.
JR: Huh? My dragon’s missing and all you can think about is grammar?
Dr. J.: When you describe a pet, you can give a lot of information. In our last lesson, we talked about your opinion of it and the size. In this lesson, we add the age, color, and breed or kind.
JR: Right, that’s the order of cumulative adjectives. “Scary-looking” is opinion, “huge” is the size, “adult” is the age, “brown and orange” are the colors and “bearded dragon” is the breed. He is such -
Dr. J.: I think I see him over there!
JR: Good! I’ve got to put him back in the cage.
Dr. J.: While John puts his dragon back in the cage, let’s look at another example. I brought my energetic little 10-year-old Russell Terrier today and she’s looking at Dorothy’s turtles!
JR: You can use this order to describe just about anything: your car, house, a book…
Dr. J.: Now, try using several adjectives to describe your pet or a friend’s pet.
JR.: And that’s Everyday Grammar TV!
