  • Tactical shooter developers , especially in a world where unreal engine 5 has never been more accessible, seem to consistantly waste their time on this one mechanic at the expense of everything else that actually matters.

    This is something I've been saying and complaining about for years. A lot of tac shooters over the last decade have been nothing but gear and gun simulators... but forget that they are VIDEO GAMES. I grew up on Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and SOCOM, and these are the games that started it all... however... these games actually had full campaigns with 10-20 different missions/maps, squad management mechanics, and so on, but the gameplay was first and foremost. Stuff like customization was there, but it wasn't as in-depth and didn't NEED to be. Now we have the opposite. Games that go crazy into the customization but are hollow shells of a game. No campaigns, small handful of poorly designed levels, terrible AI, etc.

Or the reverse, they give you a normal gun but want it to do really dumb things and you have to make it happen for them to give you score.

    I am a solo Unity developer now, and I have to tell you, seeing the "man behind the curtain" hasn't been fun. Why are these games probably good "on the surface?" .. Well, you can buy 3D models. You can buy tons of player and weapon animations. You can buy assets built by people better educated than you that will establish amazing lighting in your worlds under all conditions, and simulate the weather. Some of the things mentioned in this video about painstaking weapon and bullet physics detail (I don't mean this rudely) are actually not hard to do. Amid the swirl of razzle-dazzle going on in the game, they probably look better than they really are if you can't see the code and test the consistency of them and whether they make sense.
    You want to know what's hard to do? Making complex, intelligent, responsive AI that then LIVES in the world you built (bought), behaves convincingly, aims and senses players logically and fairly. While you can buy some of that stuff, you mostly need an actual math and computer science background, and some education. That's probably why all these games fall apart when you stare at them too hard, and have enemies that alternate between non responsive and snapshot aimbot god. It's also probably why a lot of these "developers" have bad attitudes and are hostile when they come under any scrutiny. They're probably a bit disingenuous as people, know they can cash in if they pay up front to create these worlds, then tick a few boxes. They know they're incompetent, and they don't like that you know.

    • @benjaminrabbit659
      @benjaminrabbit659 Месяц назад +13

      weapon and bullet physics can also be purchased off the shelf too. I wouldn't think most meant to be disingenuous, at least at the start, but yeah, these games can do the stuff that is available off the shelf or easily looked up really well, its the parts that you can't, like turning those assets into a fun game, that they fail at.

    All of these "games" have the exact same mission blueprints which are just spawn in with a bunch of bots and hunt them down until the last one.
    The levels are statics and the bots roam around without any purpose. they don't design any scripted events that can create tension and excitements. The missions usually have an anti climatic ending after you spend 10 minutes looking for the last bot you didn't kill.
    Even ready or not suffer from this. They just have a more polished and aesthetic framework but the missions themselves are basically the same.
    There are no events like in the trailer 3:36. Those things can't happen in a non scripted game.

    • @softwaredev337
      @softwaredev337 2 месяца назад +24

      Scripted events are cool, but not when they are just lazily implemented pre-scripted animation sequences. I'd prefer to see more of a half-life game design approach with most of these games, having triggers that trigger certain events, e.g. walking near a rathole triggers a sequence where you see rats flooding out of it, and having character voice lines alongside that. This specific example would work well in a game like Ready or Not, where the developers describe the world as being corrupt and dirty.

I think devs should focus more on basic systems like optimizations, game design, UI, balance, medical system, QL features, bugs, and go step by step in developing the game. Once you have a solid foundation, when all the "big content" comes to the game, it can be developed in a solid and fun way.

      I honestly think Ground Branch, while lacking many things, is still pretty good compared to most of these early-access tactical shooters (though that's not a very high bar to be fair), though it's still just a little too painfully bare, speaking as someone who mainly plays solo. The mods that add extra missions spice it up a little but it's still a long way to go.
      While I'm usually the kind of person that's fine with just "trusting the process" with these kind of things, since developing a game of this kind in full can be an arduous undertaking, particularly while being a fairly small studio - I can't help but wonder why development for GB has been so slow throughout the years.
      The devs have indeed been transparent with what's being worked on and at what stage they are with said things, but it still feels strange to say the least that they've been developing it for about a decade and a half IIRC, and there's only one update every year that adds a couple weapons, some map reworks, a few AI changes (though they had recently made the switch to a new middleware) and *maybe* some new functionality like better NVGs or finally being able to go prone now.
      It feels as if it's just grinding along and we'll maybe see a full game by 2054.

      as someone who's entry point to tac shooters was insurgency, no they are not. Inurgency and Insurgency: Sandstorm, along with the Red Orchestra/Rising storm series are peak tactical shooters. Tarkov kind of counts, but not quite. All of them are older than the current wave, and all of them are better than every single popular game that has came out. The problem isn't shovelware, the problem is devs caring about flashy systems over creating a cohesive game experience. Thats why Insurgency, Rising storm, and even tarkov to an extent work so well. They're not a game with tactical shooter systems, they're games that use tactical shooter systems to assist in the enjoyment of the gameplay loop.

  • @sannyassi73
    @sannyassi73 2 месяца назад +48

    The reason these games have all these 'systems' is because..... the devs most likely bought modules and code examples from a store. It's not painstakingly crisp because they did a good job on that part, it's because everyone is using the same repainted plugins. And changing things like bullet drop and spread, that's just changing a number. It seems like this 'game' has a massive memory leak problem- when you lose fps the longer you play that's usually what it is. One game I made has this problem, but it's a game you only play for about 20-30 minutes, the leak takes a long time to build up. I spent forever troubleshooting trying to find what was causing it but gave up- this memory leak seems like it only takes a few minutes to be noticable- that's pretty bad.

    Almost all the games you talked about have one big issue, and that's "why am I here?"
    If you play a game and don't have an answer for "why am I here", then the game gets old fast, people need a reason to be doing what they're doing otherwise the game will die
    In Ready or Not you have the answer to "why am I here" by roleplaying a SWAT officer, you get mission briefings, map blue prints, suspect and civilian information, 911 phone call recordings, AND ROE requirements you must follow if you don't want to fail a mission, each one of those things help you understand why you're gunning down the 187th pedo that week while also yelling at you for shooting someone that wasn't an immediate threat to the player.
    If Ready or Not only had nice looking maps and guns/gear but nothing in regards to answering the "why am I here" question then it'd have died before the 1.0 release.

      There are two kind sways: when gun as a unit sways and when sights go out of alignment. I hate Arma 3 sway that is tha former and sights are always perfectly aligned and love the latter in Squad. Especially with iron sights the error most people do is not to align the sights properly, not to mention when you are in high stress situation and have to shoot fast. Shooting AK in Squad feels like shooting AK, the gun is a separate object that you have to control.
      When it comes to running and sprinting stamina, in full gear, I suggest to try it by yourself. 30 kg of gear on takes a toll, especially on hot day.

  • @tiberius8390
    @tiberius8390 2 месяца назад +9

    Weeell.
    I agree there needs to be proper working gameplay there. Releasing a game with only the realistic weapons but without gameplay is useless.
    BUT for the genre of milsim/tactical shooters weapon realism is a big thing in my opinion. And it definitely should not be overlooked. In fact the only thing making me optimistic about Direct Contact's possible future is their weapon system.
    As for Reforger. I find the Conflict and even Combat Ops game modes incredibly fun. The second even while the AI is obviously still very unfinished and dumb. Conflict has worked very much from the beginning and is a great mode. The only thing that botched the release was the constant connection and netcode issues that got you kicked out of servers every 10 minutes. So Bohemia clearly only released this with gameplay actually there. Fun gameplay at that. And in its current state most bugs are fixed, the engine is running well and they have major mod-support. Definitely the right move to include modding right from the get-go, because they know ArmA3 would have never been so popular without the mods. They know they are developing merely a platform that modders can use to build upon.
    Same actually for OP Harsh Doorstop. Them being an independent studio if you can call it that with much less resources, who develop a completely free tactical shooter game of pretty good quality. But their goal is to develop a platform where mods are an integral part and at some point probably the only reason anyone will be playing it in the long term is a good call.

    I wouldn't be so quick to group Arma Reforger into these groups of games, its "business model" so to say is completely different. Arma is less a game and more a platform that you can build your own gameplay on top of with support for very large open world maps. Reforger specifically as the devs, publisher, and game name suggests is really just a test bed for arma running on a new engine with added console support. Arma is very much a "build it and they (modders) will come" case in point DarkGru Servers. That being said the base gameplay in reofrger is great and even some of the singleplayer game modes while sometimes buggy are fairly polished and quite fun. I think a lot of people do miss the "point" of reforger.

    Its so crazy tho cuz like, I'm a software dev and its been like 5 months since I've said I wanted to make a game, and immersed myself into courses covering unreal 5 and whatnot and just banging my head against this and practicing my c++ and unreal skills, and that "gameplay" part of things comes down to nothing but ideas and creativity, implementing those for me is really easy, but the things they have, pretty graphics and really detailed animations is hard as hell. I suffer from those, and I don't understand how they get that part right and the others wrong.
    It may just be because I love videogames and they are on the money side of things, but thats also bullshit because their animations and gun models like you said are so super detailed, clearly a lot of work has gone into them, but its just so bizarre.
    Edit: I've thought about it now, and I think its just like how you said at 4:14, a buddy of mine, pretty senior as a software dev, but not a gamedev, but wanted to start doing it also, and the way he came up with the ideas were so bizarre to me, he came up with classes and ways you can interact with things and how that would work, created a whole ass spreadsheet/ miro board of his ideas and I just kept asking him okay, but like what the fuck is the point of X when you don't know whats it for, he was very passionate, gave up after a while and it stunned me that, he has ideas but its just in the wrong order, I kept pursuing him to actually think about the individual starting blocks of the game, whats the core, what you wanna do and then build it up to how you want it but it just did not make sense for him. Maybe I'm wrong and im just yapping who knows. We will see where my knowledge take me down the current year and the next one, I always had scepticism about videogame development, about that they actually just don't give a damn so I really hope I can prove it not for others because I highly doubt anyone will play my game, but to myself that actually this can be done and they're just terrible at what they do. Anyways enough yapping. Great video btw.

    Not even looking past the 1st min of the video, but as a guy that has worked in games his whole life (im 38 now) - first as a 3D artist - then transitionned to graphics /engine programming, i can tell you one thing : there is a single good reason why there are so many games like these that come out : Delusional and unskillfull people who have no real experience / or clue about what goes into making games open their UE and start making a "game". You get shiny graphics really fast and really easily - i mean hum, all you had to do was buying some packs of assets, some controllers, pack them up in your engine of choice and voilà, you have a "game". But they don't actually know anything about what goes into making a game, all they know is that they have ideas, and how to click buttons in UE. They've probably never heard about a socket, a command buffer or anything like that. How do you expect them to release a game, seriously?
    Engines like UE / Unity made the "entry point" to "game development" so easy. You don't have to know anything anymore to do these, anyone "can" do it. You don't have to worry about what a buffer is, what a matrix is, all you have to do is click some buttons and watch some tuts on youtube. All that matters is that you can convince some investors and bring enough hype to get traction for your project with your shiny stuff.
    I am terribly desperated to see that. Not really for me, but because games like these pollute the game world for everyone. For the players, for people who actually have the skills to make games, and for themselve, embarking into something that will just wreck their lives and hopes because they didn't realised at first into what they were engaging themselves in.

    A little unrelated, but still a solid idea for FPS bots. Basically, right before the game begins, each bot in that game will spin a metaphorical wheel to determine how they play the game. Some things these devs put in their games do not really fit on a game Some of these Indie Devs have a High scope to their project, i understand that, But when designing something or creating a game, the focus is STABILITY. obvious joke about "brit doesn't understand gun culture and why tactical Barbie is so popular" that i wouldn't respect myself if i didn't make, generally solid points. but you missed the biggest example. Tarkov. Tarkov is what started this, and its what all of these games are trying to get a bite out of. couple that with the rise of the firearms/milsim airsoft community globally... its why they are trying to make cash grabs. There are a lot of people who do not have the money or live in nations that allow it who want to go and build out a gucci kit setup and video games of this nature are an excellent outlet.
    Naturally, the vultures swoop in to steal peoples money. This is less a "tactical shooter devs keep making the wrong game" and more a subset of the systemic issue in the gaming industry of making shovelware with a catchy trailer to sucker people in.

      Hell no. Here's a list of some of the changes 1.0 made to the game
      - Enemy AI reaction time has been removed, making it physically impossible for you to react if they fake a surrender. Before 1.0, they had a reaction time similar to the average human reaction time, allowing you time to react.
      - Enemy bullets penetrate almost any surface (including solid concrete walls), player bullets can only penetrate very thin objects such as doors and windows. Before 1.0, player and enemy bullets had the same penetration.
      - Enemy AI accuracy has been increased, they now rarely miss shots if they have line of sight. This includes while they are running as they removed the running accuracy penalty from AI so have fun getting lasered by a crack addict with a pistol running full sprint away from you.
      - 1.0 removed lots of map variants. You used to be able to play up to 5 different game modes per map, now you're lucky to get 2 game modes per map.
      - 1.0 did NOT update the FSR or DLSS used for no reason. It's literally replacing a 5mb file it takes not even 30s to do and they couldn't care enough to do it.
      Among other things.
      Does Ready or Not offer a unique experience that no other game has? Yes. Is it a "perfect example of a tactical realistic shooter gone right" Hell no

    Was just talking about this the other night. Sick of tech demos. Love how cool gun customization is, but I'd actually like to *do* something with them.
