I been collecting since 1983....and I always liked the "poor man's watches"...you know the 7 jewel Benrus, or Helbros, or Clinton, or Elgin etc. Some soul from another era in America spent a good part of his wages on it.
Bunn you should do an update version of this and show the rest of your watches and new ones you've gotten since then! It's very interesting to see your collection and hear your stories of how you got them.
Anyone into collecting watches will have a box like this. I've got a good little collection of pocket watches I've gathered over the years, about 100 pieces. The more I collected the more knowledgeable I became and I finally quit as it just got too expensive for the really nicer, higher quality unique ones. I enjoy what I have and don't regret the cost.
Hi, I like the presentation, just quietly talking through the watches one by one. Really enjoyed it. Tavannes is pronounced Ta-Vanns and is a Swiss company still in existance. All watches have a story and I like the used watches particularly. I also have a collection of all those models, plus many more and intend to just keep them and enjoy them. Regards Terry from NZ
Which websites/persons would you recommend to buy such beautiful and restored railroad pocketwatches (Hamilton, Elgin, Waltham, Illinois, Howard.....).
I don't know. The pocket watches I have bought are either from the flea market or ebay. Some work and some don't. All of them are in need of at least a cleaning. The reason I don't buy restored pocket watches is the cost. I don't use them for time keeping so why pay for that. Besides I enjoy finding out why they don't work and fixing them. Those brands you mention are good. I own several of each one.
I have a Waltham pocket watch that seems to run 10 to 15 seconds after you shake it and stops. It seems to be wound as tight as it will go. I wonder if it is over wound, or mainspring broken, or what else could be the problem. The movement sounds clunkier than my great grandfathers Waltham which runs. I have not been able to pop back off. Wonder if it worth taking to my friend the watch maker, who will charge me, but does so very fairly.
To me there is no such thing as an over wound watch. If the mainspring was broken you could wind the watch forever and it would never run. Since it runs a little bit and you can't wind it up anymore I think the mainspring is good. I think it needs a cleaning. Of course one doesn't know till one examines the watch.
Thank you for your reply. Took watch to my friend the watch maker and first thing he said is someone really goobered this up. The regulator lever is missing and there was a piece of bronze in place of the forward facing jewell on face side of the balance shaft. Debating whether it should be more than a wall hanger.
It can be ungoobered. The question is do you want to pay for it. To me the bronze can be easily replaced with a jewel. You have to find a parts watch for the regulator lever.
That's how I got into this hobby. I bought a bag full of pocket watches. Mostly cheap ones but there was a movement from 1750, I gave it a wind and it started to run. I couldn't sleep that night. I just watched and listened to that moment and wondered what it had seen in all its years. I bought a bunch of watch tools, books and watched videos about pocket watches and 10 years later I have a huge collection of pocket and wrist watches. I buy broken ones, fix them and sell a few to buy more. My favorite pocket watch is a Railroad watch. I have a Bunn Special 23j 60hr RR 100 run and only 10k total made. My pride and joy!😁 Keep doing what makes you happy!!!
All those watches, just felt hypnotised "Just follow the watch and count to 10.......". Kidding. Like your videos a lot, spent ages this year looking at them. I have a few old vintage watches, trying to make a collection. As far as the plastic packets go - great idea. Now I put each watch in two packets, the ones that have an air tight seal (sandwich bags). I leave air in each packet to act as a cushion. Have a good New Year 2016 !..............
+HP Horsemanship I have never worked on a modern mechanical pocket watch. I do have a couple of modern ones. They both have wrist watch movements in them. I know one is an ETA movement. The other one I don't know. There are a lot of them out there with Chinese movements. You know they are Chinese because they sell for so little.
i need a chime watch,, ... but my doctor forbidden me, iam in treatment i have several box of wathc at home,,, iam almost lost the ammount, for sure more more than 130
Love your collection. Do you know where I can find these kind of pocket watches? maybe flea markets or jewelry stores that won't rip me off? Any advice would be great. I really love vintage pocket watches and it's something that I would love to collect. Maybe not as much as you lol but some. Ps thanks for sharing your collection
I don't know. I stopped buying them starting this year because I think I have to many. I was going to make some show and tell videos about them like this one. I tend to get fixated on a certain model and buy several of that type. Its like potato chips, you just can't have one.
I got a few jupiter watches and they are average prices of 50 to 85 dollars...well made watches just not big values...good luck and I would keep the pupiters if I werre you..
I have 137 watches, one pocket watch and the others mechnics and some quartz. But usually i see time in my mobile its more accurate. i dont trust in the oldies...caring maintenance
you old curmudgeon.. I got about 500 watches and I only have a few to match your upper end 23 jewel watches. I got about 20 goliaths which were the last watches I could work on as the eyesight went to hell. With your videos I fixed about 7 out of 10 broken ones..hahahaalike you said I kicked the habit and still keep them for family..ty my friend joe hanlon
I remember when I started collecting in 2003 there would be 12 size 14K gold watches for 200-250 USD at the flea market. I thought that was expensive. I don't go to the flea market anymore but from what I see on ebay that was the time to buy.

Yes, it is a disease with no cure.
That was fun. Thanks. Also, I am quite jealous of your box o' watches.
That is a brilliant collection. I to have 34 pocket watches, most I have Repaired.
In this box of watches I think I replaced a few mainsprings and tighten a cannon pinion.
Jd Richard are you willing to sell me some of yours?
James Wong, perhaps. I am starting to sell on eBay, what are you looking for?
Jd Richard please contact me through email at jameswong6590@gmail.com. Thanks so much.

Contact us if you have any questions
On the first watch it has MBE on the back of the case. I have a Hamilton with the same engraving. Do you know what it means?
+Erik Looney I looked at the watch you ask about and on the back is WRE. Those are some ones initials.
what is the tool you are using? do you recommend any "modern" pocket watches for under 200-300$? are you using any pocket watches in your daily life?
The tool is a case opener. I don't kn ow anything about modern pocket watches.
Everyone has a pocket watch in today's modern society. Chances are you are reading this comment on it.

yes zenith is the most valuable
Either that or the Tavannes.
The Waltham Riverside would not be too far behind. But if it were a Riverside Maximus, then it would be, possibly, the most valuable watch there.
