This track is beautiful. It fits so well with the scene in the movie, and the events that followed the kiss. It also holds a faint sadness, representing the distance that will now seperate them
Let's not Forget about the letters they were going to give each other the day they kissed. Takaki lost His and Akari felt the moment so much she ended up forgetting about it (And so did Takaki, he probably wouldn't have given her the letter for this reason). Perhaps, those letters would have been the key to kindle their interest and start texting each other. Maybe it'd would have been a reminder of the love they both will never end up losing completely. Yeah my eyes are teary.
"At that moment, I felt like I understood things like the existence of eternity, the heart and the soul! I felt as though we had shared all the experiences of my thirteen years, and the next moment...I became unbearably sad! Sad because I didn't know what to do with her warmth against me, or what to do with that soul, or how long I should hold onto them. I also came to the realization that we would not be able to stay together. The overwhelming weight of our lives to come, and the uncertainty of time hung over us.But soon, all my fears began to melt away, leaving only Akari's soft lips on mine. That night, we stayed in a tiny shack by the corner of the field. Wrapped up in an old blanket, we talked all night, until finally we fell asleep. The next morning when the train started, I got ready to leave, and there...Akari and I said goodbye!"
Many claimed this movie had a sad ending because the last scene before the credits was too loose for interpretation. However I'd consider it a uplifting yet hanging ending. The last scene when "One more chance" was banging the atmosphere with a few recaps and the trains left a slight detail that is metaphorically uplifting. Just when the trains crossed the line and Akari disappeared, Tohno smiled and carried on. This seemed like he actually moved on from his trance, and his life is anew.
I just can't use words to describe how make me feel this movie. It's all about let go and grow up... but at least you have the memory of your real first true love and it would make you smile no matter what.
That we could not be together forever after this... was a fact I clearly grasped. The vast lives we had ahead of us... the boundless amount of time which laid unavoidably stretched out in front of us...
We, who were small and sickly at the time, preferred the library over the playground. And because of this, we were teased by our classmates. But when we were together, we didn't seem to affected by those things... T-T It brings it all back!
I hope I don't sound like a heartless monster when I say this, but I didn't get impacted by this film as I wish I did. I didn't end up crying and I didnt need to sit in silence for a few minutes to regain my mental stability. I realize this movie takes a lot of maturity and understanding to experience the full emotion, which I'm too young for. I learned that in life no matter who you begin your life with, you'll slowly drift apart and meet new people. You may keep some, but you'll always be moving on. That's life. The animation and soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous, but since I can't reach that level of life experience, I couldn't feel the true emotion behind the film. I hope I'm not alone when I say this.
lemmonnyy you're not alone. You sound pretty mature yourself because you already understand the concept that people come and go. This film teaches something you already know and im sure have maybe felt, but not to the extreme of Takaki.
I think you didn't get impacted 'cause you didn't feel the same emotions as the main character did. I love this films and these songs always stunned me because I experienced something akin to that, although I know the truth you will move on in life but at sometimes I just cant help myself to remind about it and feel sad
I feel the exact same way and I was starting to feel a bit excluded. This is one I'm definitely coming back to in a few years, nevertheless I thought the artwork was breathtakingly beautiful

When you spot that at 1:34, when they kiss and the music goes to a more energetic rythm, it's just notes from the Song "One more time" at the end of the music, foreshadowing that this kiss and this last meet is the last thing they shared and what hurt him so many years....
A Hollywood ending would have completely ruined this film... ruined the entire POINT of this film in fact. If you can't appreciate this film in it's present form then I'd say you have no idea what it is like to have truly loved and then lost. And IMO that is sadder yet.
they'd have made it into a shitey romantic comedy with like, the point where everything goes wrong, followed by the 20 minutes of awkwardness until everything was HAPPY ENDING. woo.
And right then it felt like I finally understood where everything was, eternity, the heart , the soul. It was like I was sharing every experience I’d ever had in my past 13 years. And then, the next moment, I became unbearably sad. I didn’t know what to do with these feeling. Her warmth, her soul. How was I supposed to treat them? That, I did not know. Then right then, I clearly understood that we would never be together. Our lives not yet fully realized, the vast expanse of time. They lay before us and there was nothing we could do. But then, all my worries, all my doubt, started melting away. All that was left were Akari’s soft lips on mine.
Your comment made me realize how brilliantly the ending of 5 cm/s emulates the feeling of a break-up. First you hate it but with time you come to accept it and realize it was the best way. And even when it ended the way it did,you are left with the good memories.
He stole the words outta my mouth!, but ya, i love how even a slight change in melody of the same song, can make it something beautiful in its own ^^. Good movie.
I felt the exact same way! I used to hate the ending, but then someone told me that if anything, it was a very realistic portrayal of real life. And that made me realize how true that was, and I finally understood the ending.
Perhaps, Shinkai made this film as a way of learning how to let go of the things that he had in the days of his youth. This is just an observation since I could see the trend in his other films: Beyond the clouds the Promised Place, 5 centimeters per second, Voices of a distant star and even his latest one: Children who chased lost voices. Maybe, he yearned for the days of simplicity like that.
Dawook Dont worry you will get one eventually, maybe you need to low your standars? lol just kidding she might be out there, matbe in the other side of the planet, but there :3
But with something as beautiful a master peice, you want to own it legit, so you can give your money to the guy who made it and truely appriciate his work
Luckily Makoto Shinkai made another Short Movie with the same aspects of distance and love. It´s name is "Voices of a Distant Star". I can highly recommend this "5 Centimeters Per Second-Like-Short-Movie"!
I presonally think the final scene should be Akari (The male, forgot his name) running in pursuit of the girl. When he crosses the train tracks, the view should fade with maybe a last text like: 'I found it. I finally found it... it was here, in this city, all along.' (Stolen from Clannad but still) Yeah, it's corny, but I rather have a happy ending :) (sorry for necropost)
It wasn't a sad ending Either, he smiled in the end remember which means that it's enough, he's happy to relieve a moment long past. It would have been Miyazaki's work instead of Shinkai if it was way too obvious.
I think that's everyone. But the fact is, we can't prevent that. We were taught that happy endings existed from all the American portrayals of it, but in reality, we are just being fed what we want and not what reality is.
@thirdleft Yeah It's a soundtrack they tend to do that (Imperial March, Leia's theme, etc) they weave variations of individual themes into the scenes. There are only three main characters in this film, Sort of limited the pallet a bit.
@bakabakasumi The ending is more realistic the way this movie did it. In real life, there are no happy endings. Just bittersweet ones. It just depends on how you begin your next story.
I was pointing out my preference for one genre of anime over the other... crap... I think I forgot... probably Rozen Maiden... but my point was I liked the more down to earth slice of life/romance animes more than action based shonen animes, while stating that I still find them entertaining.
i'm guessing the person who disliked this did so because when he pressed like button, like for me just now, nothing happened. due to an error or maybe they just ran out of "likes" for the week but he wanted to leave a mark so he choose dislike. so now dislike and like are both like, there is no dislike, they just ran out of like.
well, like i said, I'd rather have a happy ending. Maybe it also has something to do with the fact that I'm one of those guys who don't really like change, and rather have things remain the same.
I always liked these animes better than the generic shounen ones... although, TTGL, RM, and FLCL will always be good, they just don't stack up to ones like this.
Seriously...? Look at her damn reaction. Who else do you think she saw that merited that reaction? You think she would do that to some random guy she saw or that surfer dude back home? No. Takaki is the only person that would make her do such a thing.
For me it represents that sometimes life isn't fair and you don't always get your happy ever after. It says to the world'If you want to be happy you have to learn to move on from things.' I have a quote that I wrote: 'Love can bring the happiest times in your life, but be prepared for they may also bring the worst times, as you may have to face losing that which you love. To have happiness you must also face sorrow. Those happy memories may also be a cruel reminder of the pain you have faced.'
I agree it's the best way to end this movie, but I didn't like it either. Throughout the film, I knew they would not be together just from the direction of the plot the movie was taking. However, I did wish wish Shinkai would make an alternate ending, one that Takaki and Akari got together.
Takaki is the guy. I don't agree with your ending though. This anime teaches a real life lesson. We have to move on from our first love in order to pursuit our own lives. If Takaki went after Akari, then that lesson would've been meaningless. Also, it wasn't a completely sad ending. Takaki smiled at the end because he knew Akari has moved on in her life and he should too.
In a way, I'm kind of angry at Takaki. He should've moved earth, heaven, and hell to try and be with Akari if he loved her so much. But I guess that would've ruined the movie for some people, and I'm happy with how beautiful it was overall.
I understand that, but its still not right to do so. If your a true fan then you'll find some way of getting it, wether its asking a parent to buy it for something like birthday or christmas, oranother way of getting it. or you''ll just have to live without it or just listen to it on youtube.

Nice explanation but this is so sad

As painful as the ending was, I still believe that it is by far one of the best movie endings I've ever seen, or that I will ever see.
I just can't use words to describe how make me feel this movie. It's all about let go and grow up... but at least you have the memory of your real first true love and it would make you smile no matter what.

I think the movie's sensibilities may have clashed with yours. That has nothing to with age or experience, it's more of a basic attitude towards life.
