  • Thanks to Rutland Cycling (being part of Team Rutland has it's perks!) they put me in touch with Brompton who loaned me one of their ultra-light bikes for a week.
    I used the bike to commute for the week and thought I would share with you some of the reasons I cycle to work and the benefits of commuting by bike in the hope that it might inspire you to give it a try too.

    When you get the chance to borrow a Brompton Bike for a week you don't say no :) I had a great time riding this bike and was sad to see it go. The good news is it looks like Nathan may need one to get to his new job as part of his journey will be via train.

      Love both of mine and despite its size it very nimble and quicker than everyone realizes.
      As a lorry driver of a 44 tonne truck it amazes me that people are surprised I cycle to work.
      And I have the only bike allowed on site where I work everyone else's has to be stored in a bike hut.

      Great video :-)
      If anyone tries a Brompton for the first time, they need to give it a proper go. When I first rode mine it scared the living daylights out of me: compared with my tourer it was so twitchy I felt I could barely control it, but after a couple of rides I learnt to love its responsiveness. More then anything of course I love its portability, whether it is on the bus (for my regular commute) or taking it somewhere in the car.
      Thanks for your videos; they are inspiring :-)
      Bests,
      Tim

      I saw that you chose a S bar type, why not a M bar? I was contemplating whether to get the S bar or the M bar. The reason for the hesitation is I am scared that if I take the M bar, it cannot speed fast enough and if I take the S bar, I will get back pain for long distance. What's your take on this?

      I'm hopefully getting a Bike Friday Pakit delivered from the USA , purely because it's even lighter than the Brompton, it apparently rides better and has more assist levels. The Brompton still folds the best though. The Bike Friday is at least 1.5 times more expensive on the electric version lol

    My wife has finally agreed to us moving from the US (where’s she from) to Copenhagen (where I’m from) and I am so excited for my brompton to get the love that it deserves :) I use it in NYC, but not nearly as much as I will back in Copenhagen. That bike is excellent and I may need to get my wife one now.

    I salute you for commuting by bike. At least you can do it in Europe. Here in the U.S. it is flat out dangerous. I used to commute all the time by bike loved it till I got hit from behind by a truck. Needless to say I survived, broke some bones etc. Rehabbed and got back on the bike. Now I stick to bike trails, rarely take the streets as cars here in the U.S. just do not watch for bikes or even pedestrians. Keep it up though.

    I completely agree with all of your points. But for myself, living in the part of the Midlands where I am, the nearest well-paying jobs (or at least half-decent wages) are just too far away to get there by bicycle. A car is the only choice until teleportation is perfected. (Or at least until I can find a job where I can either work from home).
    Also , one of my big hobbies is studio photography. If I include all of the cameras and lighting equipment that I use on a shoot, it is only viable to get to and from shoots using a car.
    But maybe one day, things will change and I will be able to commute by a method other than by car (I hope so !!)

    Very nice video. As a tip, a Brompton bag on the front luggage block will greatly enhance the balance of the Brompton and improve the quality of your cycling. It is amazing how much weight you can carry on the frame, and not suffer from a sweaty back by using a backpack. Plus you can leave behind the bag on your handle bars - which detracts from steering.

    • @OneLessCar
      @OneLessCar  6 лет назад

      Great to know! Thanks for the tip. As it was a loan I had to make due with my backpack (and sweaty back) but my husband will need one for his new job and I'll let him know the investment in a front bag is worth it. 👍😁

    Reason #6: you can slow down and really enjoy the city where you live. There are a lot of things you see every day when you are driving or taking the public transportation but you never get a chance to really stop by to check them out. A lot more people need to commute by bike. I think it’s just been the decades of marketing by the auto industry that has made people think biking is for Kids and once an adult, you drive a car everywhere to show you are “successful”...Even if you only drive less than 3 miles or so...Then pay money for the gym because you get fat from no exercise. Then join weight watchers or something 🤦🏾‍♂️.

      Or ride a trike, real fun, no saddle pain, stability, rear view mirrors, short braking distance and less drag. Sure, trikes are expensive, so buy one second hand.

    I tried the Brompton, it felt long and stable as a 16-incher and it's great. But there are seveal drawbacks to it, one of which is the handling whcih feels much twitchier than 20 inch folding bikes like most Terns and Dahons and the other is the price which is only good if you're planning to make this an investment as the bike is meant for longevity unlike the rest of the bi-fold folding bikes

    • @oliverpolden
      @oliverpolden 5 лет назад

    +6 you do not care what time it is as congestion does not affect you so much. That can mean you arrive at or leave work at different times to suit you or work.
    +7 with a Brompton you can mix it up more with putting the bike in someone else's car to help them if there is a carpool lane or to make them (feel) better and you bike at the connections so they can drop-off / pick-up at convenient spots for them and you bike the rest.
    +8 (related to one of your 5) the mental health of biking, so arriving feeling great not stressed, not bothered so much about time, means your I.Q. is higher, you are more productive at work so you EARN MORE money, or need less time working for a given productivity. Time spent on bike can become work time as your mind is more creative.

  • @shawnbikes

    I'd love to bike to work. It's about 20 miles from my house to the office. The only bad thing is, I live in rural area and I'd have to leave earlier to get there on time by bike. So that would mean that I'd be riding in the dark. The only rural route highways to my work could be rather dangerous during the dark and lighting is very poor. Now if I lived in a city or more urban environment, it would be a different story. Rural areas are awesome for daytime riding but they lack the cycling infrastructure needed for night time cycling and the lack of budgeting will always keep that lack of infrastructure present. I think the solution is that they need to pay me just to go cycling hahaha :D

    Cycling in London is quite a nightmare... taxi drivers, and lorries sometimes just glide few inches from me and I am already very much to the side of the road. And not to mention people park at cycling lane, and when you cycle not in the cycling lane because of this, you risk someone randomly open their door without considering you cycling from behind. Or inconsiderate drivers just won't stop for you... I noticed the best way to ignore these drivers is to just not give a shit. But it's hard to not give a shit when their driving skills can get you killed. And I not a fast cyclist, I cycle slowly and not rushed. It makes it worse because it doesn't make any difference on the way can you respond to these behaviour! When accidents happens they/public say it's always the cyclist fault regardless..

    Just a question ... You mention "black cab drivers." What kind of cab divers are they? Also, are cab drivers in London actually saying that bicycles cause pollution...? What is there reasoning...?

    • @OneLessCar
      @OneLessCar  5 лет назад

      Black cab drivers are the traditional cabs in London (most of which are black) which you can hail on the side of the road. All other cabs in the UK (usually referred to as minicabs) are normal cars and have to be booked in advance, you can't hail them.
      Not only do cabbies say it so do politicians and it gets printed in papers, it's untrue and shocking that it gets printed at all www.theguardian.com/environment/bike-blog/2018/feb/05/why-are-politicians-getting-away-with-bike-lane-claims-based-on-hearsay

    • @OneLessCar
      @OneLessCar  5 лет назад +1

      I don't find the Brompton to be slow, having the right gear for good cadance is more important. But if you like 20inch wheels and they work for you 👍

    if you ride your bike all the way, why not have a normal road bike, it might be more comfortable, and even a little bit faster.

      I own 3 bikes and, to be honest, my Brompton is the perfect machine for commuting. It’s very comfortable (with its Brooks leather saddle), it’s super nimble in traffic (getting up to speed faster than ordinary bikes), and when I arrive at work it takes 30 sec to fold up, carry into the lobby through a revolving door, and then disappear under my desk! Mine has a nylon black zip cover that lets me carry it into “NO BIKES!” buildings posing as a not-a-bicycle. Love it! And, of course, sitting under my desk all day, it can’t be stolen off the street.

    • @OneLessCar

      This isn't true and is not backed up by data which in fact shows cycilng is very safe, even in a country like the UK where there is little dedicated cycling infrastructure.
      According to Department of Transport figures UK cycling fatalities are at a historical low, with one cyclist being killed for every 27 million miles ridden - the equivalent of riding 1,000 times around the world. In fact, the chances of being killed when cycling is pretty similar to the chances of being killed when walking, and you wouldn’t think twice about that!

      Cycling accidents are reduced when the government builds cycling infrastructure. The Dutch have built their cycle infra in the last 45 years and there are more bikes then Dutch people (22.5 milion bikes vs. 17.6 Dutchies).
