Gardening is a life long learning curve, the weather, your health, time constraints all play a part so you do what you can and tweak as you go. I garden for positive mental health and if I get the produce that I hope for thats a bonus. Take care =-)

It happens to all of us. Please give yourself grace. If anyone thinks that you are lazy they're either new to the channel or just aren't paying attention. The freeze response is real. I love that you are so real and don't try to put a false version of yourself on your channel. You are relatable and that helps those of us who also deal with overwhelm and freezing up. We're all doing the best we can and hopefully we all learn from our mistakes and the mistakes of others so that we can do better. Lots of love from North Alabama in the US! 💜

My garden is on a much smaller scale than yours. I sometimes feel overwhelmed and exhausted by the amount of work that it requires, especially big jobs like cutting dead shrub and tree branches and the weeding. I wonder what it would have been like to live 200 or more years ago on a farm or homestead? The long days of labor and then the harvest being even more intense with preservation and processing. Then there is the unpredictable weather, animal damage, plant diseases . Crop failures. No refrigeration. Famine sometimes. Saving enough seeds for the next year. I am humbled when I think of our ancestors.

I have recently been reading a book on this very topic which really made me think! Concepts of "happiness" "self fulfilment" are extremely modern - our ancestors even just a few hundred years ago were too busy toiling from dawn to dusk in the way you describe just to stay alive! Relationships were about teamwork as opposed to love. no one had the time to sit around thinking whether or not they were happy!

I totally disagree. Do you think our ancestors were just automatons who worked without thinking? What is "modern" is your misunderstanding of what is work. Toiling from dawn to dusk in an office or a factory must surely dull the senses and make us robotic - as occurs in this modern age - and only to make someone else rich whilst you can barely pay bills. Toiling from dawn to dusk on the land, observing all the many nuances and displays from Nature, being at one with land and weather, working in a rhythm with the seasons and the earth may be physically harder than most work demands today, but the fulfilment, the sense of achievement, the knowledge that you have provided for yourself is beyond measure. Yes, teamwork was important whether it be from family or neighbours and that led to deep and meaningful bonds, led to culture and heritage that is dying out these days as people spend their excessive leisure time on various devices. Our ancestors worked harder and longer hours but created much more than you seem to realise.

@@DanusIrishHerbGarden For me, the stress of survival would have been greater living off the land so many years ago.I don’t disagree with your overall opinion of the rewards and sense of accomplishment that comes from working long hours outside, in all kinds of weather. I know people whose grandparents and parents lived working a farm. They have said that it was hard work and stressful with the unpredictable weather and income. And as you said, our ancestors created a culture and heritage that is not as common. Today, many people around the world still live directly off the land. I have tremendous respect for them.
Here in the USA, farm work is still the most dangerous job in terms of injury or death.

It's so easy to let gardens get away from us during the business of the summer season. I try to do just a bit a couple times a day as I go walk around my house for exercise. We can only do as much as we can do.🍀 I figure in the Autumn and next Spring I'll catch up with trimming things down. NH (US) has had a wonderful growing season, hubby and I actually grew cucumbers! LOL. I have been a MH (herbalist) for years and I'm still learing how to grow things. Our rosehips are glorious this year, I can't wait to harvest those. I enjoy your videos and seeing the animals. I love hearing your chickens running around the garden making noise. Here in Australia, it's the last 2 weeks of winter, and I have noticed the clover growing madly, and I realise that I'm already behind. I have had to wash every blanket, cat blankets, sheets, etc over the last 2 days because one of my cats got fleas and every time I put something else on the clothes line I would look at my garden beds, now completely taken over by weeds, and I think to myself that it's SUCH a LOT of work to get ready to plant and begin the cycle again. But it is going to be absolutely vital to grow as much of your own food as you can because so many millions of tonnes of food has either not been grown in countries because of rain or drought over the past 2 years and the amount of grains improperly stored in countries like India, China, Brazil and the US has been largely destroyed by mould going through the product. The cost of animal feed for the farming sector is going to be so high that it wouldn't surprise me if meat prices come down in price as desperate farmers try to sell off some of their herd in order to be able to feed some of their animals. It's a situation we have not encountered before and it will be a shock when the public eventually get told that we are in a global famine situation! Everyone needs to learn how to grow something even if it's only herbs on a patio or in the kitchen but those who DO have enough room for several different types of vegetables will be much better off than those who don't. I have a really bad back from years of nursing and I have been offered an operation to improve the areas of degeneration and reduce the pain but I also know the risks associated with the treatment and I've thus far said no to surgery number 10! But when you mentioned your back I was nodding in sympathy Terri! Anyway I've said enough but I know that come Tuesday I'll be weeding and clearing out my beds and beginning the sowing and growing season. I hope that you have plenty of your cayenne pepper balm ready for your back and other joint although I'm sure you're prepared! . Take care now from country NSW Australia.

You are so right about everyone needing to learn to grow SOMETHING, we're heading into rough waters, I think. Here in the States, my garden & farm are in Colorado and I had heart surgery in May, so this year's garden has suffered hugely from me not being able to do much, losing my handman to dementia and a Biblical plague of grasshoppers. they decimated both of my greenhouses and the seedlings I'd managed to plant out, so no harvest for me except Zucchini! I have great empathy for you and back pain, and I applaud you for giving so many years of compassionate care in nursing. It is a calling but it takes a huge toll on one's body. I hope you find a treatment that will work, and I wish you a complete and total healing! In your honor, I'm heading out to my garden to tackle at least one bed of weeds. Hold tight to your happiness, and guard your Peace

I could never think of you as "lazy", my goodness. Life happens, each and every seaon is so different, especially if our bodies are presented with perticular challanges, backs, knees, etc.... May we be gentle with ourselves along the way. You my dear are not lazy, quite the opposite. Here in the mid Atlantic USA it’s been rainy and extremely hot and humid. Too much for this New England girl so I’ve just let it go. It’s amazing how things that were planted have died, but the pumpkin seeds I threw on the compost heap have yielded a beautiful crop of pumpkins. So happy to see this promise of autumn. Mother Earth knows what to do even when we are confused.

My big lesson this year was I'm tired of buying plants and fighting the deer, squirrels and chipmunks. I was planting flowers they supposedly didn't like around the outside of the garden but the little buggers just ate the tops and dug up the roots. I noticed that they didn't like any of my herbs! They are flourishing! I am now starting to harvest them for infused oils and dehydrating some to be used in cooking and baking and cleaning. Took a long time to figure this out but, I'm now just playing to my strengths. I go to the local farmers market weekly so I don't need to grow any veggies. I can get fresh eggs and some meats there also. It's more cost effective for me and I've made some lovely friends with the farmers and other vendors there. As I'm up there in years I don't have to reinvent the wheel and I can let others do the hard exhausting work while I have fun with my herbs and flowers. Many blessings to you for a good harvest.

Change is hard, pivoting in your approach takes looking inward at our own habits of convenience. We have had to do the same. We had laid down very expensive mulch over landscape fabric around our gardens to keep the invasive grasses out. But....after a few years the mulch breaks down and becomes the perfect habitat for the invasive grasses, so they grew in the mulch!!!. We had to remove many yards of mulch, fabric and covered with just a very heavy fabric, no mulch!

Thank you Terri for sharing! I normally refrain from giving advice but I was not able to put my garden to bed last fall and it was a mess this spring. I had a new grand baby that I am now watching during the week and have barely gardened. What has helped me be peaceful was adding in well defined pathways. I used large cardboard boxes and metal fabric stakes that I had. For some reason I have felt very peaceful about my weedy yet productive space as it does not feel like a “garden” but I am happier with it then I’ve ever been. Just a thought. Good luck and take care.

Terri, good morning to you and Lol. Our kitchen garden has been a bit disappointing as well. Our tomatoes have not done as well as we are accustomed to having. Romas are growing, but the beefsteak are almost rotting before they are ready for picking. Butternut squash has grown very well, and we are expecting double the numbers this year. Squash is one of my absolute favourite winter type veggies. Green beans have grown from a vine left from last year. This has been a wonderful surprise. We have a wild blackberry bush in one far corner, and it always grows well. Too bad I can't harvest more than the wildlife eat first! Oh well. The big surprise this year is the Mullein plant. Two grew, and one of the two sprouted many many 'heads'. I was able to collect the beautiful yellow flowers for earaches. I believe Mother Nature brings to us what we either need or will need for our Winter indoor time. Rhubarb has been harvested x3 so far. Mother Nature provided 3 Stinging Nettle bushes for our needs. This makes my favourite herbal tea. Fresh tops are still abundant. Older nettle leaves are still harvested, separated from the 'food' nettle, and dried for a Rosemary and Nettle hair rinse. Ah. Good stuff. ... I am looking forward to the videos showing you preparing your garden for 'overwintering'. Blessing to you and yours from Ontario CANADA.

Hi Terri, I too have neglected my garden this year as I've had anxiety and zero energy. I have more energy now and gone back to it. Trying to catch up is impossible as I have a garden on a very steep hill so hearing you say there's always next year has cheered me up no end. This year we lost a lot of veg we sowed in spring. The wet weather here in England held everything back and gave the slugs and snails some very tasty meals with our young plants so we had to sow again but then they bolted so that ended up being a disaster as well. I was downhearted but not anymore. That's just the way it goes with gardening. Much love Tina. x

"Wait a minute, I have a lot to say," said little chickens... so cute! Gardening is a practice, isnt' it? My California garden this summer has been a complete disaster (in terms of food I'd like to eat myself) but it's also been a place for the plants to grow all willy nilly. I see hummingbirds and bees enjoying the fruits and I just have to sit back and let it happen for now. This may sound a bit weird but I had a fly land on my hand yesterday, as I sat on my back patio, reading a book. This fly, no matter how much I moved my hand would not fly away,. he seemed to be looking me in the eye and just DARING me to ...what, I don't know! And just the past couple of nights I have been wrestling with mating skunks! I swear it's a message that I need to tend my gardens...

Thank you for sharing, Terri. The same happened to me this year. For the last three years I've been working to create the raised bed garden. This year was it's first full year of growing since completion, but it's become a bit weedy while my attention was pulled away toward reclaiming our old in ground row garden. Because I spent this entire spring and summer focused on the in ground garden, to get it situated and reclaim it from years of neglect, the raised bed garden began getting away from me. I'm hoping this autumn will be the turning point for me as well. I'm spending this late summer and soon early autumn pulling grass and laying wood chips and compost. We're almost there!
