- Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHDV2) has been reported in at least three states in the U.S. This is a very serious disease and highly contagious but is it something we need to worry about in our domestic rabbits?

There is a vaccine in the U.S. but it runs about $150 and up for each rabbit. It is mainly for pet rabbits. States like Arizona and California have the vaccine.

From what I understand it can be spread by insects as well. This is an issue for domestics in cages as well.

How does RHDV spread?
All RHDV strains can spread easily from infected rabbits in droppings, urine, secretions from the eyes and nose, and at mating. Spread can also occur from contaminated objects such as food, clothing, cages, equipment, insects (especially flies), birds and rodents. The virus can survive in the environment for three and a half months over hotter periods but up to seven and a half months in moderate temperatures.

It's here in Ghana, West Africa, too. I'm so afraid for my rabbitry now. A friend was hit so bad by the virus some months back

I'm from Britain and wild rabbits are just wiped out, they're completely gone. I used to shoot dozens of rabbits on our farm and I haven't seen one single rabbit for about 7 years. It's too late for Britain but it might not be too late for the US, I urge you guys to lobby your government to take this disease really seriously.

My yard is covered up in wild rabbits. That is a major reason i want to keep my rabbits up in cages. I also have each rabbit in their own cage that has not got common walls. I did this just in case of disease such as cocsideosis. But i hope this will work for this too. Hopefully i can keep rabbits out of a raised bed area to grow my rabbit feed ( as well as quail food.)
That is good thinking. Good luck with keeping wild rabbits out of your garden though. Unless you have a good tight fence around it, I am not sure you can do that.
@@Slightlyrednecked i used to only get the rare bunny but i had to have my dog put down this spring because of cancer so they know the yard is not protected so now my yard is a protected buffet for them. That's one reason i have tall raised beds.
I have no wild rabbits near my rabbits. My rabbits are in hutches High up. I lost half my rabbitry last march. I lost 3 rabbits this week to it again

One of my rabbits seems like it died from this today. Very concerning

yup, at this time you are probably out of the reach of the disease. But, like you said, it will probably spread.
It’s closer to you than you think. The upper part of Colorado has it. Google “RHDV map”. There is one updated almost daily. There is also a group on Facebook keeping rabbit owners up to date.

Lennon is a rabbit fancier to her they are pampered pets, if you listen to this gentleman I think he said he keeps them for meat which means it's probably completely impractical to keep them all inside. He certainly seems quite knowledgeable to me
California is the biggest area for alfalfa production. Isn't this the main component for pellets? Hopefully it doesn't get wide spread there
This is a good video but Chris is working from older info. It's pretty widespread in California with confirmed cases in a number of counties.
That is a good point. I don't think that is a huge concern because of the way that hay and pellets are processed. But we may just have to wait and see.
How about through mosquitoes?
That is probably a threat too honestly. I don't see why they wouldn't be carriers.

I really don't know. I am sure that there are some rabbits that are shipped by air overseas.
Can fleas carry the virus from infected wild rabbits to domestic rabbits? What symptoms do we like for? Is it always fatal or is there a treatment?
Yes insects are a vector. It's fast acting enough that really the clearest symptom is bloody discharge from an already dead rabbit. I believe it's always fatal and there are no treatments.
I am sure they could. Like Matthew Sebring said, there aren't really good symptoms to look for. It isn't always fatal but has a very high fatality rate and there really isn't any treatment. The best thing to do is to isolate any rabbits that look sick or act lethargic from the rest of your rabbits until they get better.

My rabbits are in the house all the time, would they get it then. I going to have my meat rabbits in the garage, with there own, AC unit, and air filters. Do you think they would get it.? I am very clean with them.

This is an off topic question I have a baby quail who hatched to early it's been two days he cant seem to balance and is barely opening its eyes my main concern is its food I been feeding droplets of nutridrench is there anything I can do??? It doesnt open its eyes and is barely able to balance but he topples to the side
That sounds like it could be some kind of neurological issue. I am not sure that there is much you can do for it unfortunately. Just keep trying and see if it recovers.
