  • After five consecutive failed rainy seasons, more than 20 million children are facing the threat of severe hunger, thirst and disease across the Horn of Africa.
"The food security situation is very, very dire," says UNICEF Kenya Nutrition Officer Olivia Agutu. "We are having more children falling into malnutrition because they do not have any food to eat at the household level."
At the Insta Products factory in Nairobi, Kenya, staff work round the clock to produce locally sourced Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), the nutrient-rich peanut-based paste health workers use to treat children suffering from severe acute malnutrition.
"We're in the epicenter of need," says Rolf Campbell, managing director of Insta Products. "Not only in Kenya, but also Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Burundi, Rwanda. We're operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and we still can't keep up with the need."
Watch the video to see inside the region's largest RUTF manufacturing facility and meet some of the dedicated staff who are working hand in hand with UNICEF to produce and distribute high-quality RUTF to restore the health of children struggling to survive the worst drought in 40 years.
