In that year if they had hired Phil Jackson and not Mike D'Antoni, things could have been different. Phil is notorious coach, who knew how to manage egos, he could had effect on that team, on the way how hard Howard plays, on pushing back Kobe's demands and getting him more in tune with the team, Dwight was a bit alienated, because of Kobe's intensity, the whole team could have played through their strengths, instead of applying Mike D'Antoni run and gun system, with personal who doesn't fit for that.

And even his offensive schemes required more pick and roll and threes when this Laker team wasn’t built for that. Each coach could do well with the right type of team like dantoni has with the rockets now, but at the time, each coach had a team they did not know how to utilize properly. Some coaches, just like some players, need the right personnel around them to be successful. And some legendary coaches like Phil Jackson or popp or even rick Carlisle can make any personnel around them successful to their abilities.

But ultimately the player and team decisions end with the owner of the organization. So Jerry Buss is largely responsible as well. People are right, Kobe has had many issues with his centers. The problem the Lakers had with Dwight is that the owner, Jerry Buss died in February of 2013. It was the middle of the season that Dwight was on the team. Shortly after Buss died, the media criticized Dwight. And the new owners lost him in free agency. Jerry Buss was a genius that won so many championships for the Lakers over decades, bringing in the best players. Kobe, Steve Nash, Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol could have easily won championships. But Jerry Buss passing away and his kids coming in to take over ownership ruined that. Nobody talks about this fact. But Jerry Buss was a true basketball genius. God rest his soul. Dwight was averaging 17 points and 12.5 rebounds per game with 58% shooting and amazing defense the year he played for the Lakers. The criticism that he received that year was really absurd and unjustified. He played great.

Jerry West might be the basketball genius, especially with his GSW success. But ultimately the player and team decisions end with the owner of the organization. So Jerry Buss is largely responsible as well.
People are right, Kobe has had many issues with his centers. He's more of a competitive mindset than Dwight, and that probably caused the rift. He pushed out Shaq and Dwight. This personality flaw is a downfall of both players.
Yes, Dwight might have been good enough to average 25 and 15 if he pushed himself. But how can the media criticize a player for averaging 17/12.5 with high FG% and great defense? It's like if you aren't Bill Russell in the flesh then you're a bum? Dwight wasn't playing like a top 10 player of all time, but he was playing at a hall of fame level.
The Lakers might have been struggling early in that season. But a lot of times when All-Star players join the same team it takes a while to work out their kinks and learn each other's games. If that squad stuck together and played healthy they could have been another dynasty.
Dwight not resigning with the Lakers in free agency could have easily been due to the fact that Jerry Buss passed away and that Jerry West was no longer GM. The media was completely humiliating Dwight. Kobe was dissing him. Ownership didn't seem to like him. Any sane person would have left. If Buss or West was there they probably would have stopped the negative media frenzy (with their connections), or they would have fixed the drama by taking the reigns and not letting Kobe create the trainwreck that occurred.
