Astounding considering how they did everything they could to cut the budgets on both The Mummy and The Mummy returns in almost every other way. I remember doing a Universal Studios tour just after The Mummy Returns had released and the tour guide telling us they did almost NO location shooting on that film to cut the budget as much as possible - for example they just hired piles of plants and used the Universal backlot for the jungle scenes! There have been a ton of Prop Store items shown on the channel that I've wanted over the years, but I don't think anything to date has hit me the way this one has. Between how much I enjoy the movie itself, and how awesomely detailed these are, I can't think of any other props I'd rather have. Shame my budget would collapse if I even checked the bids on it though.

This has gotta be one of the coolest props of all time! I remember being in awe as a kid at the sheer heft of the thing. Makes me wanna dive into a slapstick set piece and do cheesey one liners about ancient curses and whatnot.

I met the designer of these books, 20 some years ago(don’t fully remember his name). He didn’t have the Golden Book with him at the time but he did have the Book of the Dead. He let me pick it up off the table and it was heavy. Only lifted it about an inch and placed it back on the table (didn’t want to accidentally break it). He told me when they filmed The Mummy Returns he didn’t make a hero prop for the Scorpion King bracelet in the first weeks of filming. He said he had to create the hero prop when the Rock accidentally fell on it during a fight scene. I was like you didn’t make one before hand? He said something about time constraints but mainly said it took him a week to fix the Scorpion King bracelet.

I remember seeing that as a kid when the actress is holding what has to be this prop, because I remember her posture, trying to hold something heavy. I remember thinking-yeah, that’s real metal! And here all these years later, it is.

I watch a lot of "behind the scenes" videos and such, so I'm very familiar with the "hero" and "prop" weapons. I had no idea they made "hero" and "prop" versions of the books for The Mummy! I can't even imagine the feel and weight of this sculpted-bronze book with gold-leaf gilding!! Amazing!

one of the coolest thing to happen to me was i was working on a film and i got to go into the universal prop house and i found the spear of Osiris amongst the Egyptian props. i have a pic of me holding it. the mummy films are some of my favorites. such amazing detail. i never got a close up view until now but you can see the individual piece of gold leaf they used. so cool! i always wondered.

Honestly I don't think I've ever appreciated that people actually took time and effort to make that book. It's so well done that you instinctively think of it as a part of that world, it's seamless. But it means you go without thinking how fine a job was done.
