It's important to emphasize that a lot of the ICU beds have the capability to perform Percussion & Vibration. These beds are extremely expensive, but I believe that they should be employed to help patients on ventilators to remove secretions. Trust me. I'm a chronically ventilated patient, and I can tell you, that I LOVE the Percussion from these beds. If the HFCWO vest is available it can be used, and IPV, can, and SHOULD be used, in the Intubated, and Non-Intubated patient! The cough assist, I never liked that thing. I felt like it pushed stuff down deeper, and it was extremely uncomfortable on me! The cold air from that thing, made me gag horibly! The MetaNeb, is also a great modality to be used, and I love that machine! With the MetaNeb, you're not going to get as high of a frequency as IPV, and You're not going to get lung recruitment. I could go on, and on about the the use of the ICU beds, and the use of IPV, and the MetaNeb! Airway Clearance is something I know from experience! It's important to have a comfortable modality, that is effective, and that can be adjusted easily, thus tayloring it to the patients' needs!
