    So the context to this video is that it was during the 2013/14 Ashes when Mitchell Johnson utterly destroyed the English cricket team with the sort of fast, hostile bowling that the world hadn't really seen for a long time. For years, fast bowlers around the world had been slowing down, concentrating on bowling line and length and working more with swing than speed. Johnson came out just looking to blast batsmen out with bouncers, sending them down as fast as he could. And England crumbled, losing the series 5-0. Piers Morgan was in Australia watching it and he absolutely roasted the English batsmen, basically calling them cowards.
    A lot of players didn't really like that from Piers, and it wasn't long before he was challenged to face some fast bowling himself to see what it really felt like. Piers didn't back down from the challenge and Brett Lee (who had been retired for about 4 or 5 years at this point) agreed to test him out with an over. Poor old Piers probably wishes he hadn't...

      Oh man Mitchell Johnson- we all knew he could do it, the question was when was he going to show it and get the pitches to back it up. The Gabba pitch in the first test was all the encouragement he needed, from then on it was like screw the pitch im going to intimidate them the whole series

    Actually the balls would have been legal in a match, in test cricket the leg side wide rule doesn't apply, and even in an ODI or T20 they still wouldn't have been wides, the ball needs to go behind the batsman to be a wide, once Piers stepped back, Lee would be allowed to follow him with the ball as long as it doesn't go behind his back.
    In other words, with regards to the leg side wide, once the ball hits the batsman or the batsman hits the ball, it can't be wide.

    • @mohankumaras
      @mohankumaras 4 года назад

      They wouldn't. Umpire would have asked him to stop or taken him out of bowling completely for unnecessary hostility. You are not allowed 6 bouncers an over, though they rarely exercise that rule, but in this case they would have.

    • @kevinmaddinson9461
      @kevinmaddinson9461 4 года назад

      @@mohankumaras When last has an umpire taken a bowler out or even warn him for bowling too hostile? Probably the 80s when there were less protections, the umpires didn't say a word when Johnson was keeping the ball at England tailenders' throats in that famous ashes series. Neil Wagner bowls like 80% of his balls short. If more than 2 balls are head height an over then it's wide but you're still allowed to keep it that height, it'd just be wide, plus if you keep it at throat height it won't be wide. The reason bowlers don't consistently bowl short is because it's more effective to mix it up with fuller bowls or on a good length, the short ball becomes a lot less effective when it's predictable, unless the batsman has an obvious weakness against the short ball, like Stuart Broad or Suresh Raina, most play it well now.

    • @mohankumaras
      @mohankumaras 4 года назад

      @@kevinmaddinson9461 You're right. The point I was making was if the batsman is obviously trying to avoid playing the ball and almost running out of the pitch to avoid it and you still follow him and hit him on the body is blatant hostility. In which case the umpire would intervene. That doesn't mean what Johnson did was right, umpires should have stepped in and restricted him to two bouncers an over. Same goes to Wagner as well. Key difference is the reaction from batsman, are they trying to play and fight or are they obviously trying to protect themselves not bothering about their wicket.

      @@mohankumaras You have any proof of that? I've never once seen an umpire say anything to bowlers for bowling nasty, and I've seen a lot of nasty spells, I've seen tailenders facing 90mph chin music and still no words from the umpires!

    • @mohankumaras
      @mohankumaras 4 года назад

      @@icebear4648 Here's what the cricket laws state,
      41.6 Bowling of dangerous and unfair short pitched deliveries
      41.6.1 The bowling of short pitched deliveries is dangerous if the bowler’s end umpire considers that, taking into consideration the skill of the striker, by their speed, length, height and direction they are likely to inflict physical injury on him/her. The fact that the striker is wearing protective equipment shall be disregarded.
      41.6.2 The bowler’s end umpire may consider that the bowling of short pitched deliveries, although not dangerous under 41.6.1, is unfair if they repeatedly pass above head height of the striker standing upright at the crease. See also Law 21.10 (Ball bouncing over head height of striker).
      41.6.3 As soon as the umpire decides that the bowling of short pitched deliveries has become dangerous under 41.6.1, or unfair under 41.6.2, he/she shall call and signal No ball. When the ball is dead, the umpire shall caution the bowler, indicating that this is a first and final warning, and inform the other umpire, the captain of the fielding side and the batsmen of what has occurred.
      This caution shall apply to that bowler throughout the innings.
      41.6.4 Should there be any further such delivery by the same bowler in that innings, the umpire shall
      - call and signal No ball
      - when the ball is dead, direct the captain of the fielding side to suspend the bowler immediately from bowling
      - inform the other umpire for the reason for this action.
      The bowler thus suspended shall not be allowed to bowl again in that innings.
      If applicable, the over shall be completed by another bowler, who shall neither have bowled any part of the previous over, nor be allowed to bowl any part of the next over.
      - The umpire shall report the occurrence to the batsmen and, as soon as practicable, to the captain of the batting side.
      The umpires together shall report the occurrence as soon as possible after the match to the Executive of the offending side and to any Governing Body responsible for the match, who shall take such action as is considered appropriate against the captain, any other individuals concerned and, if appropriate, the team.
      41.6.5 The warning sequence in 41.6.3 and 41.6.4 is independent of the warning and action sequence in 41.7.
      This incident is a prime candidate for application of this law. Also there were calls from former England players about the number of bouncers Australians were bowling at tailenders in 2017-18 ashes in Australia. I guess they repaid that in kind in 2019 when they had Archer to do the same.

    The bouncers would have been wide balls but Brett Lee wouldn’t have bowled them there if Piers Morgan hadn’t backed away to the leg side ... as a bowler, you see the batsman backing away, you bowl it at them to either hit them or cramp up any scoring opportunity through the off side field which is often why the batsman will back away to the leg side. Same thing if you see a batsman advancing down the wicket, you’ll drop it in short to knock their helmet off. It usually smartens them up, if they’re still conscious of course.

  • @Driskyle
    @Driskyle 4 года назад +1

    One could argue that the 2nd ball (the bouncer) was a wide as it was quite far above the batsman’s head. I think it might be penalised as wide in limited overs matches (ODI and T20). However, to echo some of the comments below, wides are not really penalised in Test cricket (because of the unlimited overs) unless they’re so far out of the batsman’s reach or so far above his head that even the wicket keeper can’t reach it.
    Keep up the great work guys, really enjoying your cricket reactions!

    Someone, ONCE, accused Piers Morgan of having a brain...
    The jury is still out, trying to determine if it's possible that he has one stashed in his closet at home.

    I'll add a thumb up on behalf of Harry and Meghan. The pulpit bully should have got one smack on that overactive gob of his.
    (He was pretty brilliant in his dealings with the Tories' handling of Covid, mind. I can't deny him that.)

    Dont be mistaken into thinking Peirs Morgan is popular in the UK he isnt, he is considerd one of the most obnoxious people on the tv and in media in general.

    i don't like he did not gave him a chance to play t he ball he should have kept the ball away from his body with wickets as it's aim man it look intentionally he was trying to hit him

  • @barrynichols2846

    That could not be a proper cricket ball, more like an indoor practice ball that is not as hard, a proper ball and Piers would have been down

    I dont know much about Piers, only bits and pieces, but admire his crusade against cancel culture and also with this (almost medieval public stoning) episode, he showed the courage to stand by his opinions and accept acountability for his words. That shows character in my book. I dont know why so many dont like him.
