I actually suspect it’s a coping mechanism. She lost her 3 year old child in 2021, and she still seemed to be grieving a year later (which also happens to be around the time she got into this relationship) so maybe this is a distraction for her and she isn’t completely after his money. What people get wrong about free speech is yes you can say whatever you want but you're not free from the consequences of those words whether good or bad. Just like just because it's legal for them to date doesn't mean they get to escape ridicule and shame in the eyes of society.
More than it being legal, it's about power dynamics. A thirty year age gap relationship where both people are economically independent and have support structures is infinitely better than a same age relationship with financial abuse and isolation. Age gaps make power gaps more prominent. But as an independent emotionally stable person in my twenties, who is very attracted physically to 40+ yo people, I'd gladly date them just for the enjoyment of it.

I was in a very predatory relationship (16 and 32). The thing that resulted in me dating this man for 3 years was the fact that it felt like I was just casually chatting with someone just slightly older than me. It did not feel like I was talking to a 30 year old man, it felt like I was talking to another 16 year old.
But when I turned 19 and had started to mature and develop more emotional intelligence, he didn’t, he emotionally stayed 16. I eventually dumped him over his emotional immaturity and it didn’t occur to me until somewhat recently, that the reason why he went after a 16 year old was because women his own age didn’t want to date a 16 year old.

@omp199 Peoples relationship with their own trauma/abuse can be complicated and evolving over time, especially if it was "consenting" on both sides at the time, even if it technically and legally couldn't be. It's perfectly reasonable to look back on a GROWN ADULT pursuing a sexual relationship with a CHILD and realize..."you know what, it seemed normal/cool at the time but now I can see it was wrong for someone in a position of power to prey after a young girl", even if the older person was "nice" and not physically violent.

My dad who is 50 is dating an 18 year old. I am 27. He left my stepmom for her. He has a son the same age as her. The posted pictures on facebook and it just looks like a father and daughter hanging out. Her parents think its absolutely normal. She tried to add me on facebook. If I ever meet her I will call her mother/auntie and I will make sure my daughter calls her grandmother. Hopefully she and my dad realise how absurd this is.

I will never understand the “legality” or “consenting adults” argument. Yes, she obviously a barely legal adult. However we are arguing the morality of it, her brain hasn’t finished developing yet and she has her whole life ahead of her. What is she doing with an old man? How will this affect her future? The 50 year old is selfish and should know better, the 18 year old is naiive and thinks they are special when really, they are just being used. It almost never works out well for the younger party, ever. They are never the one who benefits. And for those of you who use the money argument, there’s more to life than money. Most large age gap relationships statistically do not work out for a reason. Healthy long term relationships have communication and reciprocation, large age gap couples have nothing in common. Very very very rarely is it true love, and even then I wouldn’t approve of it till the brain has fully developed on the younger partner.

My mom’s about his age. Theres been times when younger men have tried approaching her. And you know how she responds? By rejecting them. The thought of dating someone old enough to be her child creeps her out and in her words “we got nothing to talk about”. WARNING about farmers dog. It almost killed my older dog. She got a serious serious GI Infection and irritation. It was horrific. Yes - I followed the instructions for changing her food precisely. The vet told me to get her off of that asap.

The thing about age gaps is that they’re often dependent on the people. My parents are 17.5 years apart, and it works really well. My mom, having been living on her own and supporting herself for half of her life, was (and still is) fiercely independent when they got together when my mom was in her 30’s. Maturity and life experience are EVERYTHING in these situations, and this relationship absolutely is NOT IT
I agree its definitely dependent on the people and where they are in life. I can totally see how a 33 year old and a 50 year old could still work, especially cause they've had time to mature, become their own person and hopefully be financially independent. Even tho the eldest has more experience, they can theoretically be on the same level as adults. It doesn't seem like she's had that chance. Thats why you see so many women today regret theur choices and lifestylr once their reach their 30s. My mom and dad have 10 yr difference, while they’re each others best friend love and respect each other still my mother when I was a teen made sure to tell me once while brushing my hair to not date people with too much age gap bcs more often than not it would end up w me not being completely happy bcs you cannot have much in common with someone much bigger than you. Whatever you’re experiencing and want to experience you partner has already gone through and will not have the same interests as you. Granted there are exceptions and thats fine but that was her advice. I ended up dating someone with 8 yrs qge gap as my very first relationship, it just happened, I wasn’t even looking for one but it is a regret of mine. We in fact didn’t have much in common, from the smallest things. What made me laugh he would look at me like I was childish, nevermind he had probably laughed himself when at my age. I was in an age gap marriage with someone only 16 years older than me, and we had a lot of issues that were due to the age difference, and his "Peter pan syndrome", which this guy 100% has. Trying to act like you're younger than you are is fucking exhausting for the people around you. This guy is 100% my ex in 10 years.
I have a 21 yo friend that was dating this 30 yo man. She works as a waitress in a restaurant and the amount of times she was approached by older man is disgusting af. That's how she ended up with that boyfriend in the first place, then she got pregnant and he broke up with her. Nowadays she's had her baby and thinks that's the best thing that happened to her and says that now that she's a mom she "needs an older boyfriend anyway because men her age aren't going to be good fathers". I tried beating sense in her head multiple times but it's painful how unaware of her own life she is.

62-23 being a grandpa/granddaughter age gap isn’t always the case. I’m turning 23 in a month and my dad is turning 62 a few months after that. However I readily and frequently admit that my dad is old, plus I’m the youngest.

If you’re on the market at 29, you probably don’t have kids, let alone GROWN kids, or you have kids but aren’t with the parent, which is wild to be a single parent in your 20’s. You probably are in your first REAL job, like the kind of job that uses your college degree and that you’re not an entry level employee in. At 45, you probably have grown children. You’ve been in long term relationships, you’re probably a home-owner. You’ve experienced 16 years more of all that life has to offer than a 29 year old, you’d want to talk about that and date someone who is financially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and mentally on your level

Something I always think about with this stuff is not just age, it’s also life stages. She’s 23, the young adult phase where you have so much figuring out to do in terms of career, life goals, etc. When you’re 62, you’re about to retire. She has an entire career ahead of her, what is he going to do, sit at home on the couch? Get a part time job? Raise the children who could be his grandkids?
On a separate note, I’m 21 and about to finish college. For my degree, I need to do an internship. My coworkers are all at least 5-10 years older than me, and most of them are the same age as my parents. It feels weird when they treat me as an adult and they’re equal (it’s nice to be respected tho), bc they’re “grown ups” to me still. I’m not sure how it is for my coworkers, but I’m sure if I mentioned that I was born in 2002 and was a senior in high school when COVID happened, they’d start feeling really old
