My partner is half Dutch, half native Bohemian. He has an aunt who is racist. She legit told him not to date an Indian woman (this was years ago) because she was brown & hated her culture. He was shocked because most of their family on this side (including her) are all POC! He also has cousins who are partially Haitian and quite dark. He stopped talking to her over this for years. However, she was recently given a prognosis that means she will likely be dying soon. He still wrote her a message to thank her for helping raise him & his siblings & wished her well. It is not so simple as shunning your family. Helping people understand your perspective requires inclusion, not constantly arguing over politics when it's not relevant. My partner is half Dutch, half native Bohemian. He has an aunt who is racist. She legit told him not to date an Indian woman (this was years ago) because she was brown & hated her culture. He was shocked because most of their family on this side (including her) are all POC! He also has cousins who are partially Haitian and quite dark. He stopped talking to her over this for years.
However, she was recently given a prognosis that means she will likely be dying soon. He still wrote her a message to thank her for helping raise him & his siblings & wished her well.
It is not so simple as shunning your family. Helping people understand your perspective requires inclusion, not constantly arguing over politics when it's not relevant. It would be EXTREMELY selfish to start an issue over it at her mom's birthday ~ especially since it seemed very important to her mom & the rest of the family. Time & place guys.

As a liberal, I thought this was ridiculous, why is she responsible for her family’s political views? And even if she’s conservative herself doesn’t mean that she’s automatically racist or homophobic or anything else commonly associated with the right. She has a right to her own views.
