What a horse- tried his heart out every time. Many magical days watching him on Saturdays in the big handicaps and on boxing day for so many years. And who could forget husband day in the sun/ sleet at Cheltenham ?? This horse began my love affair with racing.

Some horse, not often you see such versatility in winning at various distances. Great riding performance by R Dunwoody too, kept a bit in the tank for the topweight and kept the partnership intact at the last.
Dunwoody was an awful choice as a jockey for Dessie, he was too scared to let him go, kept shortening him up on the approach to the jump. Couldn't hold a candle to Simon Sherwood.
Dream ride for Richard Dunwoody , he never moved on Dessie or put a stick on him once ……that horse was bold as a lion , I had the pleasure to see him at his stables …..he knew he was The King 💙💙💙

I mean the standard of the Irish grand National has never been particularly good but wow that era was absolutely dreadful!
Well, you could make the exact same point about the Aintree Grand National - very much a specialist race for staying handicap chasers, rather than the best horses around.
Desert Orchid 12st. Everything else in race 10st apart from the 3rd, Have a Barney 10.2. Good or bad standard, quite an amazing weight carrying performance. Also Arkle and Flying Bolt won this race (really bad standard)
