    First again. I have young trees. Need to get some of that. I've seen people dig down a couple inches under the dirt. Helps keep borers away. Your videos always seem only a couple minutes long. Then I look, and it says over eight minutes. Always enjoy them. Thanks again.

    Love these chill videos, so relaxing to watch. I saw a youtube video of a guy who placed logs under his trees. Spiders made a home in the logs, climbed up the trees and ate all the pests. Pretty good idea!

    Thanks for explaining about fungus being the "teeth" in your soil. That debunks about 15 hours of my life watching other people's offerings.
    I'm getting started late, but getting started. It's early winter rather than fall, as you recommend. But, I'll soon have my first load of wood chips. Just got a hitch so I can tow a little trailer.

    Stefan Sobkowiak from permaculture orchard had a video about this. He said that one can use paint or just simply plant high enough berry bush from south side. Also in winter, when sun is reflecting from snow and heating dark bark in the night when temperarure drops bark will burst also.

    Consider harvesting and trying pine sap for this same thing too. Many pines, if wounded, secrete a mad ton of antiseptic goo that glues over their wounds. It's malleable when warm. Of course with many issues to fix this might not be very labor effective.

    Happy harvest day! 👍🏻❤️🎃 my peach tree is splitting and weeping sap, it’s also covered in lichen. I think it looks cool but I don’t know if it’s bad for the tree. Tree is about 20 yrs old. It puts out peaches but I have a that Curley cue bug you talked about. This coming year I’m am going to spray it like crazy. I wanted to cut it down but my honey said no he likes the shade ( it’s right next to back deck). Good video. Thanks for info.❤️👍🏻💪🏻🖖🏻🐾🐾🐾🎃

    This is good info. I wrap the trunks to discourage mice and rabbits from gnawing the bark as well as prevent sunburn and sunscald. However, you can get the splits higher up the tree that need to be taken care of. Splits can develop beneath the tree wrapping the trunk, so it is good to take it off for an inspection once a year or so.

    AWESOME! Very timely video and answers a question I had about ours. Recently moved out to PA and have 3 fruit trees that didnt get love. Have those splits in them and made me think rodents. I have a cherry plum tree here in zone 8 Southern California about 20 years old I noticed the trunk on the northwest side is really got a big gouge in it ground level up about a foot up. I don't think the tree has much longer to go but it is full of cherry plums and I'd like to get a last Harvest out of it should I pack that big crack with soil and then somehow wrap it? Or should I use just a paint around it inside the crack too. I hope you're able to help I have no idea I never saw anything like this before

    What about a weeping cherry treee where the bark has been split open for years? Any hope for it? It's bloomed this past spring better than it has in years maybe because we've had so much rain. One youtube guy suggested putting dampened moss on the open fractured bark and wrapping the areas with plastic wrap to keep it on. Is there any hope for my tree? It's 18 years old.

Also, I wanted to ask....we have a couple peach trees, bout three years old???... the one we got a lot of small peaches this year, but they had this, like, these small patches that had like a sugar seeping out... ever heard of that? Could you explain the differences between mulch, compost, and soil? Are there any other steps in between these?
    Also, how manure should be used related to each of these. I think, on this subject, you'll say manure should be put down in a 2" layer in the Fall and covered with 2-4" of wood chips.
    And, I think you will say that wood chips, manure, and compost will all become soil given access to microbes, oxygen, fungus, sunshine, any water.
    Can wood chips compost without manure?
    I'm getting dizzy trying to figure out how to ask you the questions?
    But I think you've got the idea.

    I have some non citrus hedges that my late husband planted and let grow over 12 to 20 feet tall. I cut them down to about 6 feet. The 'trunks' thickened and are up to about 5 inches or more in diameter. All the foliage has died and shows no signs of returning. The bark is peeling off in large chunks and since I have mosaiced some walls in my garden, I'd like to put mosaic bands around the tree trunks. Is this advisable on a tree? I've seen it done on dead tree stumps over a sealer so I presume I can do the same in my case but want feedback so I don't waste my time. Thanks for any advice anyone has.

    @kennymonty8206 6 лет назад

    Sorry, hate to be a bother, but last question. My father says not to put mulch up against a tree. He says that bugs will kill it if I do. But, in your videos, I can see that you do indeed put the chips right up around a tree and the thing is growing like a dandelion, like a 20 foot tall, fruit bearing dandelion. Is there a secret here?

    • @amandapetersen9661
      @amandapetersen9661 6 лет назад

      In my experience, it's usually not bugs you need to worry about when mulching. Since most fruit trees only have roots in the top 2 feet of whatever they are growing in, if you put a 'volcano' of mulch around a tree (piling it high right up against the trunk), the tree will grow roots in that mulch and be more susceptible to drying out when the mulch dries out, since the majority of it's roots would then be in that small amount of mulch. The roots in the mulch are also prone to circling in that 'volcano' and then they cut off circulation in the tree. Any insects your dad noticed were likely attracted to a tree in distress due to one or both of these things happening. The way Jamie does it, making a nice even layer of mulch a few inches deep in his food forest, is good because the roots won't circle the trees and the trees won't have a majority of their roots in the mulch. Also the larger amount of mulch he uses will retain moisture better than a small circle of mulch will and provide nutrients to the tree as is decomposes. Hope I answered your question.
