its been a year since you posted this but whatever - In New Zealand, where I live (and have lived, my entire life; no vacations overseas or anything) our seasons are inversed from the northern hemisphere. I mention this because a lot of midwest emo albums which are traditionally associated with the september - november part of the year are, for me, spring albums. I don't know if this changes much because I suffer from a depressive disorder and it always gets worse around this time of year. Maybe it's not the weather, just the time
You gotta do Mezzanine by Massive Attack, how the fuck it came out in 1998 is genuinely mind blowing, nothing that has come out since even sounds remotely like it, and if it came out tomorrow it'd still sound completely new
If you wanna listen to another midwest emo album, check out "Just got back from discomfort were alright" By Brave little Abacus. One of the most life changing albums i've ever listened to. I would do anything to listen to it for the first time again :)
Mike Kinsella, the frontman of this band, was in a band alongside his brother Tim before the formation of American Football. The band is called Cap'n Jazz and they're often referred to as one of the original emo bands. Tim and Mike Kinsella are often labeled as the godfathers of emo, due to the absolute powerhouses they were when it came to pushing the boundaries of rock. Cap'n Jazz and American Football could not sound any more different from each other, but they are both incredible in their own right. Would love to see you check Burritos, Inspiration Point.
It’s pretty insane how everything lined up, all modern emo is pretty much descended from either American Football or Cap’n Jazz, more so than any first wave emo bands like Rites of Spring.
@@yoshifan52the influence of bands like rites of spring seemed to translate more into the hardcore scene than the emo scene, which is wild as fuck considering Midwest emo is like, sad country jazz and rites of spring is rites of spring
@@yoshifan52Joan of Arc is also worth mentioning; the band that came right after Cap’n Jazz broke up. Their first 3 records have guitar riffs that still influence modern midwest emo, whether anyone realizes or acknowledges it; particularly the songs Post Coitus Rock, I was Born, Gin & Platonic, Whiteout, and A Name.
@@meatgrinder9506 Fake Train is a solid introduction to Unwound, also makes their other releases more interesting to listen to considering how much their music change over the years.

Glad to see you finally getting into emo! Once again recommending "The Brave Little Abacus - Just Got Back from the Discomfort-We're Alright". Emo same as this but more proggy, also the highest rated Emo album on RYM
For more context, the specific subgenre is called Midwest Emo. And American Football did make two more albums (both also named American Football) but these were released like waaay later. For recommendations I'd go with Fuck off get free we pour light on everything by Silver Mt. Zion. Its by a lot of people that are also in Godspeed You! Balck Emperor but they include vocals
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes - 1983. This albums did the 90's better than people from in the 90's in the 80's. Each person in the band adds so much to the jazzy folk-punk from Victor De Lorenzo single snare giving more life to one song than most drummer can with a dozen drums, to Gordon Gano's pleading but descriptive angsty lyrics & inspired guitar, and Brian Ritchie's impressive acoustic bass licks that ties everything together. Everytime time I re-listen to this project I get more out of less from all the 50's production techniques sounding clear as day to just the fact that when I listen to anything else right after I fell like its has too much. Loved this video! I’m always happy to see someone getting into American Football. You basically listened to the tail of end of 2nd wave emo before all the pop punk bands like New Found Glory, Blink 182, and MCR started started wearing black, straightening their hair, and being called emo. American Football to date has 3 records, the latter two being released 15 years after the one you just listened to, very different but the same…you just have to listen to them. Someone already mentioned Cap’n Jazz and Tim Kinselle, Mike Kinsella’s brother. But there’s also Joan of Arc which was the continuation of Cap’n after they broke up…think of emo art rock, Mike played drums and sometimes guitar while Tim sang and played guitar. Then there was Owls which is basically a reboot of Cap’n Jazz as it has the same members minus one, but they make more technical and artsy music, they have two records, one from 2001 and one from 2014. Cap’n Jazz still lives on sonically through another band called Algernon Cadwallader. Mike Kinsella kept making American Football adjacent music under the name Owen, but it’s more acoustic centric as his live shows are just him and a guitar. To date Owen has 11 records, with the most recent one released last month; i recommend easing yourself into Owen with his first 3 albums where he keeps these breathier, softer vocals before his voice matured. Mike also makes music with his cousin Nate Kinsella, yeah it’s a whole family tree of bands lol. Have fun getting into the emo research rabbit hole! Goes back to the 80s. Bands that sound like this from that time period i recommend Penfold, Mineral, The Promise Ring, Hum.
if you want more midwest emo the album Shmap'n Shmazz by Cap'n Jazz is considered one of the best and most influential to the genre btw people call it Shmap'n Shmazz but the actual full title is "Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards in the Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped On and Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over"
This is one of my favourite albums ever. The guitars, Mike Kinsella's voice, the jazzy drums and the entire vibe just kill me. In fact, I became a fan of them sone years after they ha'd called it quits. American Football and My Bloody Valentine were raised as myths in the 00's. "Honestly?" was rhe first American Football song I ever heard, and it was an instant hook up. I wasn't even a teenager when this album first crossed my path, and yet it totally got me. How about listening to 'I would set myself on fire for you' band, preferably 'Believes in patterns' album? It's an emo band, also cool like American Football, but has more jazz and changes of tempo.

i think you’ll really like [trauma ray] by trauma ray, it’s a really short ep with like 4 songs and it’s an amazing listen
I urge you to give Delaware by Drop Nineteens a listen. It very much caters to what you’ve liked in the past in my opinion
You should check out 30 degrees everywhere by the promise ring
