The International Booker is my favourite literary prize because I have discovered so many writers that I love that I wouldn't have found otherwise. Also, to add, congratulations on being sponsored to represent the prize , you do such a wonderful job providing insightful synopses on books it just seems such a logical choice. I have already placed my order for the books that initially excited me but will stay tuned to ensure I didn't miss any gems.
As a Mexican and as a Guadalupe Nettel reader I0m so happy to listen that she has been long listes. Really enjoyed this particular book about Motherhood and friendship that I had to lend it with family and friends after I read it. Thanks for the link of Mariana Enriquez one of my favorite writer and Guadalupe, can't wait to watch what they talk about.
I'm a Fitzcarraldo subscriber, they are my favourite publisher by far. Every publication is fantastic unique quality. I'm halfway through The Birthday Party & the tension is building with each page I turn. The writing makes you feel like you're in thr corner of the farmyard, watching it all play out in slow motion & there's nothing you can do.
This sounds really interesting. I will be my next book. What do you think of the Fitzcarraldo design/style? The blue covers with only titel&author printed seem austere to me.
How lucky are you to have all these books. So jealous. I haven't read any of them, but have now reserved the books that are in my library. Won't buy any until I see the shortlist. Thanks Eric
Thanks for the recap. I hadn't come across any of the titles on the longlist, but that's the great thing about longlists, it prompts us to go search for the titles nominated. Well done to the Booker people to sponsor you. We love your Booker videos.
boulder is magnificent, Time Shelter talks about the dangers of nostalgia. It’s funny and eye-opening. Maryse is a staple and i just ordered The Birthday Party and Is mother dead
I obtained copies of two of these only just recently. After watching Bob the Bookerer's longlist predictions a couple of weeks ago, I was interested in Time Shelter and Our Share of Night, and I ended up buying Time Shelter when I visited the bookstore. And after watching Marc Nash give a great review of Standing Heavy 8 months ago, I ordered a copy from the UK (it's not been published in the US). I preordered a price reduced option that wasn't available back then, and it just arrived today! How timely.
always on the pulse of prizes, I woke up this morning and looked forward to making a cup of coffee and tuning into your thoughts on the longlist Eric! 😊 this is one of my fav prizes, I'm excited to grab some before the shortlist!
Many of these are available at my library! Time Shelter has caught my eye, for sure, and I have been intending to read Maryse Conde for so long - I think I'll pick up both on my weekly library trip. Thanks for the nice recap! If I didn't see the prize announcement I always come over here to watch yours.
They are so smart to sponsor you for this prize! I never would have gotten to Tomb of Sand without this prize and I also really enjoyed it, having read it with a group of fellow readers. I have Boulders and Pyre. This is always when I worry about my wallet because I want to order these and selections from the Women’s Prize longlist. I am waiting until tomorrow’s Jalak Prize list before hitting send. 💸💸💸
Thank you! 😊 Tomb of Sand must have been so interesting to discuss in a group. And the Jhalak Prize list does look good too but I’m going to restrain myself. 😅📚📚📚
So glad for this video. I have not read any of these and have only heard of a few. I have no idea where to begin!! Definitely planning to follow your progress and read along with you as I can.
I've read 2 books out of the list: Still Born and Is Mother Dead?. I would recommend them both :) A little disappointed that Our Share of Night is not there but it is an exciting list of books to discover!
I like the look of “Pyre” and “Time Shelter. At the moment I’m listening to the Ibis Trilogy by Amitav Ghosh, having first read them around 5 years back. It’s a trilogy I really love. How on Earth will you manage to read all 13 books in a month Eric ? I’m seriously impressed. All the best !!
Great! And I don’t know if I’ll have read them all by the shortlist announcement. But even if some titles don’t make it to that stage I’ll still read them.
This looks like a great list. I'm so glad you are going to be following this prize so closely this year as I am trying to read more translated literature lately and failing. This will give me a boost.
What an absolutely cracking list once again. I had intended to pick just a few to read this year, but goodness me how does one choose? I’m glad not to be on the panel with that difficult task haha. I think I’ll start with Time Shelter which sounds amazing and then work through the rest through the year. Thanks as always Eric for being such a reliable and insightful touchpoint for this brilliant prize. 👏🏻
Time Shelter sounds really intriguing! Also The Gospel According to the New World. This month I've been choosing books in connection with both International Women's Day and Women's History Month. I just started Beloved by Toni Morrison, and will be reading "The Exceptions: Nancy Hopkins, MIT, and the Fight for Women in Science" by Kate Zernike afterwards.
I read Gauz’s book when it came out in France and it is fascinating. It certainly makes you notice all those security guards and see them in a new light! I think I saw a lovely video by the Swedish author. The Norwegian and Chinese books sound interesting. The South Korean book sounds very intriguing! oh no…more books to buy and read! Thank you!
Love book prize season!! 💃🏻 Erik, would you ever consider making a video recommending your favorite books of interconnected short stories? Or is there such a video already? 😮
Lucky you having the whole longlist at your fingertips! I'm most drawn to Time Shelter, which I've heard great things about and bought a few months ago. I hadn't heard of most of the others but will be buying Boulder and Standing Heavy tomorrow...
read it in reverse alphabetical order by author. Kurkov's penguin novels are some of my favorites so I'm excited to see him there. keep us posted please!
love all the indie presses represented in this prize every year! Did I see THREE from Fitzcarraldo? I read a fair amount of Maryse Conde in college French classes, and there was an article recently somewhere...New York Times maybe?l.. about how she isn't nearly appreciated enough in English-speaking countries. Hopefully that's about to change! Thanks so much for sharing!!
Yes! Fitzcarraldo really are a superstar publisher. And I hope this will help Conde be read more. If I love this book I might go on a reading binge from her back catalogue. 📚
@@EricKarlAnderson Love Fitzcarraldo!! For your US audience, I've noticed that Transit Books (another indie) has been publishing several of the same books as Fitzcarraldo. The Birthday Party and Jon Fosse, for example. Seems like they are a good US alternative for folks who are across the pond and like the kind of books Fitzcarraldo publishes!
Will be interested to hear your thoughts on A System so Magnificent. I was originally very excited for this one, but ended up DNFing around the halfway mark for what I felt like was a loss of focus.
As a Ukrainian, in addition to Kurkov, I highly recommend you to read Serhiy Zhadan and Oksana Zabuzhko. They are rightfully considered among the best contemporary writers in Ukraine. Many of their works have been translated into English.
Boulder is amazing, I read & loved it last year. I’m very interested in Is your mother dead?. I’ve read her other books & loved them. Also interested in A system so magnificent & others. Was hoping Collected works - Lydia Sandgren would be on the list. Great video as always.
Pyre, Standing Heavy, and Time Shelter are the three that stood out for me. I just borrowed the audiobook of Pyre from my library. I have to track down the other two. Looking forward to following you through the prize this year!
3 of my top reads last year on the list, don't mind which of them win. Looking forward to the Khurkov. Did you know that even though he's 100% Ukrainian, his work is now pulled from Ukrainian libraries because he writes in Russian?
Only 3 on the list at my local library at the moment. I've borrowed the ebook of A System so Magnificent.... I'll see how I go, it's very long at over 500 pages.
I think this is also my favorite prize! I've already bought myself a copy of Boulder, and I really want to get to Time Shelter. Still Born is also on my short TBR. Happy to see Kurkov on there - I loved Grey Bees last year. Going to wait to hear more reviews of some of the other books before I commit! You've also reminded me I've been wanting to get to one of Tan Twan Eng's books! And I bought Tomb of Sand last year and it's still on my shelf...
Enjoyed Kurkov's "Death and the Penguin" last year. Already have a ton of books on the go but "Time Shelter" is tempting me, as are "Whale" and The Gospel...".
Time Shelter sounds wonderful, I'll definitely be picking it up soon. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on them all, book prize season is one of the best parts of the year 🎉
My favourite book prize! I predicted only three of the books on the list! I’m excited to read Standing Heavy, Time is a Shelter, and Ninth Building. I recently saw a Booktube review of Is Mother Dead where the person really loved it! Can’t wait to hear your reviews. 🎉
Great video, and congratulations on being sponsored by the prize! Currently reading the NINTH BUILDING (it is episodic to your point) and either own, have pre-ordered from both the US and the UK, or have access to an e-book of all the titles. So the only reason not to read all of them all will be time! Look forward to your continued content on the prize! (Was really surprised the new Kang and the new Fosse titles weren’t included)
Thank you! And yes, difficult to find enough reading time but I’m dedicating myself. I was surprised too not to see new titles from Kang and Fosse. Still looking forward to reading those as well at some point.
Oof, I just put a bunch of holds on these books at my library. So many sound so good! Boulder and Pyre stand out as most interesting for me but I'm also intrigued by The Birthday Party and A System So Magnificent it is Blinding! I'm trying to prioritize women's fiction books right now before the short list but I hope to pick some of these up along the way too :) Thanks for getting me excited for book prizes!
I’ve read Boulder. That was our TBR Lowdown Jan/Feb read and it was fantastic. I’ll need to order the rest of the books. I kind of want to read Time Shelter first.
If I read one of those (which I may) it will be JImi Hendrix, Live in Lviv, but I'm thinking seriously about reading one of the French entries in the original. Thx - and have fun at the ceremony!
I'm so thrilled there are 3 fitzcarraldos on the list. It is one of my favourite, if not my ultimate favourite, publishing house/s. But, why is your copy of While we were dreaming white?! Does this mean it's non fiction or is it a proof copy? I'm shocked and relieved that there are no short story collections on this year's list! I'm excited to read all of them except Still Born and Is Mother Dead, both of which don't appeal to me.
Yes, Fitzcarraldo put out consistent quality prize winning books! And yes, the copy of While We Were Dreaming is white because it’s a proof. The final version is in blue. 😊
Your preamble was wonderful. Well done my friend. Wish I would have said it. I already ordered Time Shelter, the Birthday party and ninth Building before the long list And I will add Pyre as I loved story of a goat Considering A System So Magnificent and Jimi Hendrix and may I recommend Grey Bees by Andrew Kurkov about the conflict in Ukraine seen by a bee keeper.
Love the Translated Booker with all sorts of interesting things to explore! Wish they’d sort out the name given how many countries get represented on the other Booker 😂
Boulder is the one from the premise that jumps out at me but it will be interesting to hear what people think as they read them!! Looking forward to more of your thoughts as you get to each book 😊📚

Yep, lots of late night reading ahead! 📚

So excited Kurkov is long listed! His Death and the Penguin is one of my favorite books. Can't wait to read his latest in April.
Your Prize Roundups are always great! I am most interested in Boulder and Standing Heavy. Looking forward to reviews!
Thank you! 😊📚
In the US, only two are available on library audiobooks (my preference). About half are available in ebook, so we have a ways to go to get access.
Boulder seems interesting and I have Time Shelter on my shelf that I'm excited to get to.

I’m very interested in “Is Mother Dead,” so I’ll start there if I can find a copy here in America. All of these sound wonderful. Thank you, Eric.
Literally crying! I want to read them all
We are spoiled for choice! 📚📚📚
great summary Eric, looking forward to your recommendations once you've read a few :-)

Great info ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👏👏👏👏 Pyre is already in my basket
Great! Hope you enjoy it and I'd love to know what you think when you get a chance to read it.
Will be interested to hear your thoughts on A System so Magnificent. I was originally very excited for this one, but ended up DNFing around the halfway mark for what I felt like was a loss of focus.
You have a full time job?! How do you do it all? You’re amazing!!
Haha! I do and my real job has nothing to do with books. It’s my passion; I’d go loopy if I didn’t get to read. 😊📚
Time shelter is amazing and essential for the time we live in, would love to hear your opinion on it!
I’m looking forward to it.
Thanks for doing this video !!
Thanks for watching! 📚
Guadalupe Nettel!!!!!!!! 😱😱😍😍 🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽

That’s great, I’ve made a note of them. Thanks so much!
I read 4 so far and Still Born is my clear favourite. But lots of surprises!
It’s an exciting list! I just ordered the Svensson book, as well as The Birthday Party, Time Shelter, and Boulder.
Great! Hope you enjoy them and that we can discuss them as we both read along.

I’m trying to read the woman’s prize but a few sound good x
Can you please tell me, in which books are political related like political fiction, political satire etc?
My main reaction is that I have read absolutely nothing from the list. I read the wrong Fitzcarraldos.
More reaction when I have it.
Haha, we're in the same boat then. 😅📚📚📚 Lots to look forward to!
Amanda Svensson's novel is magnificent
Ah great, I'm excited to read it.
To me, the books on the Women's Prize sound more interesting.
🌴🌴🌴🌴
Wonderful video.
Want to read:
Time Shelter
Gospel of the New World
A System So Magnificent It Is Blinding
While We Were Dreaming
I have already read The Birthday Party and I didn't really like it!
Thought Nights of Plague by Orhan Pamuk would make this list. Oh well...
Happy reading!
Read Boulder first. I will read it if you like it. 😊
Deal!
