Laos is just cash poor, but so rich in many other things. Laos maintains her culture, natural way of life and peace. People are happy with life and their habitat. Way to go.
It's so easy for us in the West to look at stuff like this, and say that we want things to remain pristine, and untouched in these regions. I pray that they do, but it has to be the decision of the people who would potentially benefit from this type of development.
Isn't there a lot of sunshine is Laos? Why not give much higher priority to solar power? This will prevent extinction of fish species and possible tensions with neighboring countries relying on the same river.
If you look at the economic stand point then the government should give the locals enough money to feed their families at least for several years until they can find other ways to make a living. Although I agree the government is very corrupted, Westerners and Europeans who wants to help must make sure that the government be accounted for and checks and balance must be put in place. I remember my mother use to tell me stories of the Mekong when I was a child, that the river is scared , enchanting, mystical and magical. The river belong to the people not the government and if not I wish the spirit of the river will condemned the greedy and corrupted.
90% of Laotians living in Laos are living at the bottom poverty, this project and other projects will not benefit these very poor people of Laos, the project will benefit the government officials involve and the investors. The government is the most corrupted government in the world, this government is keeping the population as poor as possible, because they're governing it for themselves. ........The revenue from the project should be spent on poor people and educations.
