Hi Eric, I started guitar 6 years ago and my path was always theory based. I start watching your channel around the time of Theory EP03. Your theory series is fantastic, the best I have encountered. Thank you for all this treasure.🙏
It was Rick Wright who came up with the progression for Pink Floyd's 'Breathe'. Because, as he said himself; he was a "jazzer". Beautiful. Amazing content as always Eric. Cheers from UK.
George Harrison was one of the few pop-rock songwriters who regularly used diminished chords. And most of the people he played with were not so comfortable with them. He called them "my dirty little chords."
Well, that shreddy bit just got me “music noticing” exactly what my lead guitarist’s go to riff is made of. What a hack. Now I too can be finally be a hack.
Catchin' up on my Haugenation. Learned a new grip for the diminished chord that includes the low E string from this vid. So cool. I know you're not a Deadhead, but I need to mention that I hear strains of "Help On the Way" when you're arpeggiating those diminished chords.
Climbing up the Dim inversions - Jonny Quest/Stop That Pigeon cover by Rev. Horton Heat on Saturday Morning Cartoons CD - Both parts are killer, but that Diminished run is in Stop That Pigeon section. You find it all over Psychobilly stuff.
"Did you know you can play Em like this?" I picked that up from Peter Green, who used it quite a bit in things like "Green Manalishi" and "Oh Well". It's very freeing, since you realize that only 2 strings actually need to be fretted for Em, and the rest can stay open.
Looking forward to that nx lesson.when i learn new chords,I try n find as many different ways to play them as I can.and I noticed the Dom 7-flat 9.had the same voicing as a dim 7.confused the shit out of me lol.
I make a generous home-pour of whiskey, I get my guitar and I settle down in front of an Eric Haugen Guitar lesson. This is what my Saturday nights have become - and I'm fine with that. (Drink responsibly kids!)
That "Creedence" V7 to I has much better Voice Leading as well, so it even sounds better. I think people usually approach 7 Chords after they've mastered Bar Chords and that's why they have that association.
HA! I told you I was going to buy a Danelectro 12 string because of your recent video and I actually bought one of these Japanese Bigsby Teles a year ago because I loved yours so much (I actually sold my fancy custom shop Tele because I liked the Japanese Tele better!). Anyhow someone should be paying you a commission!
i know it's not related to the main video, but as you read the Jeff Tweedy "How to Write One Song" what are your impressions of it? I finished it and his approach is so intuitive and organic, very different than those quantified hours methods "you need to this for 2 hours to be good" and such.
I LOVE both Tweedy's books so much! It's insane that a writer of his caliber is also such a real dude, feels like a guy you know just tellin' it like it is!

@@EricHaugenGuitar Thanks for the reply. I started asking myself this kind of questions recently, and your music theory lessons have helped me a great deal. Understanding why it sounds good is soooo much more satisfying than only playing it...
Thank you so much for the chords! I'm not nearly to the level where I understand all the theory stuff but I love playing the progressions to get my fingers moving around and your freaky pinkie muting adds to my confusion on where exactly your fingers are. You should talk about that pinkie thing sometime, I've never seen anyone regularly play like that.
If you want another gender non-specific collective term, try you'uns. Also, I'm sure it's more how my brain works than how you teach, but your detours tend to stand out as much or more than the primary topic. Drone chord shape = lesson gold! Thanks.
I haven't! But my first tube amp was a '78 Pro Reverb and I loved it. I think my buddy Erich over at Living Room Gear Demos has one of the new '68 pros and I dig his work - maybe click over there to see.
My favourite Eric persona is the military helmet Eric; humble and holding the line.
Haugen Fridays are the best. Your lessons have elevated what I bring to my band here in Philly. Thank you so much for your generosity Eric!

I stretched that 14 minute video into a 3 hour lesson. I definitely deserve some pizza.
Same here!
Fellow Eric, I love your teaching style and choice of equipment. Cheers

Learnt something new today from you!
Thanks Eric

Was just jamming along to “Ship of Fools” by the Grateful Dead earlier today, with its lovely F#o7 chord
What a kick ass lesson. I’m gonna work on the next Dim 7 lesson tomorrow. Thank you thank you.
Yes! The DARKNESS!
Thank you, Mr. & Mrs. Haugen, for bringing Eric into the world.
GREAT lesson! Playing one of these in two positions before resolving is really cool. Never thought of that.
Wait till friday! I've got part 2 coming out and it's gonna get even skronkier!
Just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and so happy I did! Love your lessons and style.
Big hug from Barcelona 🤗

Whoah that's some seriously bad teaching!
I’m a bit confused about that D#°7 in Breathe: if it’s played x6454x, shouldn’t it be called D#m6 ? I can’t find the b5. Anyway, it sounds wonderful.
I'm sure someone in Floyd is playing the missing b5! Trust me, that chord is indeed a D#˚ ramp up and not a lonely D#m6 :-)

The verse is definitely G blues.
And then the Chorus moves up to A blues with a F7 - E turnaround that implies A minor.
