  • 'Modi govt’s reputation for world-class governance takes a knock every week. The overall image of a drowning India is at odds with the Rising Bharat we were promised,' says author & columnist Vir Sanghvi, in this edition of ThePrint SharpEdge. Watch him explain why Modi govt's policies aren't finding ground with the middle class, a once loyal base of the govt, and why disillusionment has now set in.

The video by Vir is about how one creates propaganda and weaves a narrative!
So many claims are based on flimsy data/arguments or misinformation!
I'll address one: The Train derailment allegation Vir makes is the biggest example. The data on accidents and derailments speaks for itself. We have more than a dozen videos from all over the nation where so many incidents have been reported where cement blocks, large metal parts, and tree trunks placed on the rails have been reported. Any sane and neutral person who looks at things objectively would only appreciate the government. India stands at 95% electrification which is a phenomenal achievement. The next will be safety and then better services. The middle class has issues with services concerning railways in India. But those are societal level, pan-India, and multi-sectoral matters in India.
A second short one: The middle class was unhappy with the Capital gains changes the govt made. The govt rolled back the changes after the furor. However, Vir Das fails to mention that.
ALWAYS REMEMBER - The year(2014) in which Rahul Gandhi gave that fateful Arnab interview, Vir Das declared him a mature politician. You must always beware of gaslighting and manipulation of the likes of Vir Das who finds issues that Modi is causing for the middle class but does not mention that the middle class will be the most affected by Rahul Gandhi's demand of caste quotas in the private sector. Rahul Gandhi asks for caste in Miss India, Media boards and Finance Ministry halwa ceremony and Vir Dasians of the world want to tell the middle class that Modi is bad for the country.

In our parts, "middle class" includes lower castes who benefit from reservation, and not just the "general category". Maybe in your state the situation is different.

Great video...personally for me, the only thing that's making me support Modi is the opposition and the threat of communists like Rahul Gandhi who are openly campaigning on genocidal statements like "Jiski jitni aabaadi uska utna hak". On one hand is Modi who is doing stupid things like increasing capital gains tax but then there's Rahul Gandhi who says things like if you are 50% population you should own 50% wealth, which indirectly means if we are 3% population we should only own 3% wealth. Should a person be called genocidal if he is openly and knowingly campaigning on policy and ideology that has caused genocides, concentration camps and deaths of more than 100 million people in very recent history?

Under BJP we have much better external relations, I feel more proud as an Indian, age old election promises such as mandir and 370 have been fulfilled, and we are on a good growth track.
Me Sanghvi should know that the reason we have a more sensitive neighbourhood now is that China and US are much more active in creating chaos, as they perceive India as a bigger threat now.

Middle classes are foolish to put all their eggs in one basket. Actually Chidambaram’s budget where he removed capital gains was best for the higher middle class. The current government has mostly helped the poor get direct transfer etc and the tax has come from middle class. Corporate tax rate was reduced enormously in recent years and the very rich are paying less taxes.

In any case, forget about the above, Congress is not even promising infra spend and education spend that the BJP is promising, It is only talking about khatakhat freebies and jaativadi representation. So middle class does not really have a choice here, and the BJP knows this.

PS: For the new kids just youtube 'rahul gandhi arnab goswami interview' click on the Times Now link and have fun.

Modi's strategy was simple to deal with the 3 classes:
1 Poor - Provide them freebies and targeted rations to get their votes. All the while accusing the INC of providing freebies.
2 Middle Class - Glitzy infrastructure such as airports, bridges, and roads. Build temples and rename places to fool them into thinking that some great civilizational revival was happening. This also included catering to the NRI middle classes as well. Any one that did not play along was condemned as anti-national, urban naxal etc.
3 Rich - Crony capitalism with threats from the Central agencies that if you do not go along, the IT, ED, or CBI will come knocking.
The middle class is getting fed up with this. The only person gaining is Modi and no one else. All those bhakts who were dreaming of some new India are 10 years older. Nothing else has changed for them.

Middle class people are unhappy because job loss. Modiji government does not care for our traditional industries like textiles which employ 13 crores of people. This industry in trouble for the past 10years. International cotton price is 15 to 18% less than Indian price, similarly man made fibres price more by 22% in India. This disparity due government levying 11% duty on imported cotton and man made fibres. Srveral representations made to government, but it goes to the blind eye and deaf ears. BJP government will pay heavy price for the insensivity towards the old industries which are contributing significantly towards GDP and foreign exchane earning.

The political sheen of Modi as the reformer who will shake up the status quo has faded away. The ever anxious and aspirational middle class got nothing but an increasingly k shaped economy with fruits of high growth taken away by the rich elites and powerful individuals having connections with the state. Now, Mr Modi is nothing but an extension of such corrupt, selfish and vested interests. While those at the middle and lower level of social hierarchies have to contend with economic distress, inflation and lack of employment avenues.

It seems like a crime to get wealthy in this country for the rest except the ones who are already wealthy. We pray to the goddess of wealth Lakshmi but we still have Gandhi's photo on our currency who was against wealth creation. We are just a country of contradictions and still confused on what we require though we got our independence about 75 years.

have you asked the question what does "middle class" get from the other side ?
    1) it's about reservation. even "miss india winner" is not spared these days. Not to mention the caste of group of officials making halwa ceremony, while doing nothing about own foundation
    2) "taka tak" freebies. Anyone wants to know where it's being done today and its impact. Look no further. Karnataka CM's own financial advisor publicly said, there is no money for development and all rates (fuel, milk, registration etc. etc.) have gone up - with aim to fulfill freebie state.
    3) caste census. no surprise on what happens next.
    4) jitni abado utani haq - this would tell middle class what would happen
    5) x ray on wealth etc - it's crystal clear whose wealth would be x-rayed and what happens after that
so it's up to middle class what they want to choose. Lutyen media is trying to as usual bow any issue out of proportions for obvious reasons. When there is heaviest rain fall of 50-100 years, it possible something will break, which can be fixed. At least Modi built it. Family rule never did.

The sort of middle class that uses its brains is not more than 5% of the population, so no government in India is likely to prioritize their feelings/needs. Anyway, the things that the middle class needs, and should want, education, health, the rule of law etc, i.e at least 70% of governance can only be done by the state/municipal governments. These are not serious political issues, are not discussed in the media as frequently and as seriously as political circus. The middle class in India is destined to suffer no matter who's in power at the center. The system of governance is utterly broken, at least in the BIMARU states where at least 70 percent of people live

Good analysis by Vir Sanghvi but I'm afraid his conclusion on the Indian middle class becoming disillusioned with Modi and the BJP and voting against the party is off the mark.. Firstly, the Indian (largely Hindu) middle class has been a traditional and loyal supporter of the BJP and this support has become entrenched once Modi rose to the top.. Modi was the leader they were searching for all these years and their loyalty to the person now exceeds their traditional support for the party..this is not a unique phenomenon and examples of other authoritarian leaders both in India and abroad who had equally fierce support from their loyalists can be easily found.. therefore, this class even if disappointed by the perceived lack of friendly actions whether in the budget or otherwise will not switch their vote to another party..a likely scenario would be that this voter would complain of betrayal by his favourite party and leader but would also say that there's no alternative and that other parties and leaders are far worse..the 2024 election is a good example..the BJP easily swept in its strongholds like Gujarat, MP, Chattisgarh, Himachal etc..UP was tough because of the alliance between the SP and Congress and not due to any middle class anger.. they swept in Delhi which has a high middle class presence.. therefore if Modi takes the middle class support for granted, I don't blame him.. something extreme has to happen for them to go and vote for the Congress or any other party..as of now, I expect this section to complain and grumble but continue to vote for their favourite leader.

The Indian middle class wants a laid back life with no competition. No NEP2020, no Agniveer scheme, no reservation, government jobs for children, no NPS. Modi has brought competition in all aspects of middle class life. That displeases the middle class. In fact, the Indian middle class fondly hoped Modi and BJP to face defeat. Now it has to face Modi and BJP for another five years. The middle class life has certainly improved very much, but they have to work for it. That displeases the middle class. They can always blame Modi pointing to Adani and Advani. But the wealth of the so-called oligarchs is market-driven and the middle class can participate in the market economy. But they are forced to take risks to make money which the middle class resents.

Definitely, the middle class who don't understand budget will be disappointed. Most media outlets generally speaking about revenue generated and taxes collected by government. But, what they don't talk is what loan payment and interested government pays for debt previous governments took. Whatever public recieves from government is only after all necessary obligations are met. Secondly, if government is taking considerable less loans in every passing year then it is reducing dependence on loans. Also, if government is directing more money towards infrastructure then that is also good as these projects will generate revenues for government in future and thereby reducing dependence on loans. At that time some relaxation in taxes may also be seen if infrastructure projects compensates need of funds through taxation. Yes, it is painful that we have to pay taxes. But, think some person paid taxes in past to make what India has become today from a country of paucity to a self reliant growing economic powerhouse.
