According to a quote by Rumi, "The wound is the place where the light enters." Place this wisdom in the context of the Somali people's collective wounds, particularly those of our generation traumatised by civil war, and we see tiny but meaningful signs of hope sprouting from our pain. The openness and integration of our many cultural backgrounds, which have been brought together as refugees, is one of these beacons. Being a camel herder from "Geelley," a northern Somali tribe, it has been difficult for me to accept that there are people who may be better than me in some areas. My interactions with Southerners who escaped the devastation of war, however, have shown me a very important truth: their tenacity and sophistication, which are reflected in their distinctive music, "Bannaadiri." For years, I have cherished the melodies of Siteey Mannoogto, my neighbor's favorite artist, whose music has been a source of solace and joy. Yesterday, we bid farewell to this legendary Bannaadiri singer. Though she has departed, her voice will continue to resonate as a pure gem within our hearts and histories.
