    I learned a lot from this video, thanks! My oven wasn't heating, but saw the ignitor glowing red hot. Thought maybe my pilot light was out, but wasn't. Turns out my ignitor was hanging by just one screw, not making contact with gas jets to ignite a flame. Once I propped up ignitor with missing screw, oven lit up just fine. Now, time to make my pies....

    • @paulkenny5052
      @paulkenny5052 5 лет назад

      If you have an igniter, you won't have a pilot light. The pilot light has its own set of problems, but those problems gow away once you have an igniter. The igniter likely has a current safety mechanism to verify that it is not shorting to the frame of the range and therefore causing a shock hazard. Nice find, and thanks for sharing something else to look out for.

    • @engineclinic
      @engineclinic 3 года назад

      If igniter was glowing it would have lit sooner or later. Sooner if it was lp and later if it was ng.

    Thanks for the video, man. It's going to save me a lot of money. I do have a tip, though I'm not an appliance guy by any stretch of the imagination. I use this tip on all projects: once I have something torn apart for repair, I get in there with a ShopVac and a dry rag and clean everything I can. I'm most likely only going to open most things once or twice in their lifetime, so it's a good chance to clean everything. Again, thanks for the great video. You just got another subscriber.

    Great video! I watched this along with me wife and then proceeded to troubleshoot. It was the igniter. We ordered a replacement online for about 18 bucks and waited for its arrival.
    Taking the old one out was more of a pain than putting the new one in, surprisingly, but overall it went well.
    I will add that if you can get to the back of the stove then push all the wire that comes with the igniter out the back and then fish that down to where the gas connects. There you'll find a nice workable opening. Splice into the harness feed there with you're wire nuts and tape. Better those plastic nuts be out of the oven than in, as they and some corroded igniter wire were the issue to begin with.

    This is great. My wife will appreciate getting back to baking and so will I. One question, what is the safety valve for? Could it be a problem with the safety valve that's preventing the ignitor? Great informative video. Question: If all 4 burners up top are working correctly, and there is zero heat coming from the oven when turned on, is there any chance it could simply be a pilot light that needs to be relit? I was always under the impression that the stovetop and the oven had separate pilot lights, and that the oven had a constant low-level pilot light on. I don't smell any gas when the oven is turned on, even though it's not heating. I have a GE gas oven. Not sure the model, just a cheap one they put in apartments.

    • @chrisstokes2020

      It sounds like the oven thermostat is not working (oven control thermostat). Are you sure you have a pilot light in the oven and not an electronic igniter?

    • @chrisstokes2020
      @chrisstokes2020  3 года назад

      If this is a gas stove (you didn't say), just because the igniter is lighting doesn't mean it is good. Igniters are the most common failure when gas ovens do not heat. If you have a multimeter you will need to test the igniter or if the igniter is weak, replace the igniter.
      Don't forget, SAFETY FIRST!! Always unplug the appliance and in this case turn off the gas as well.
      Hope that helps.
      Merry Christmas & Be Blessed

    If the igniter glows brightly for about 2 minutes before the gas turns on, and the resulting gas flow is very weak (tiny flames, barely enough to stay lit) and the igniter never turns off, is the igniter faulty or could it also be the safety valve?

    My breaker tripped only where my gas oven line is on. I tried to reset it but it just stays in the middle. To use the stove I have to light it with a lighter. The clock, fan and light doesn’t go on. It’s just the oven line cus everything around the oven works? What could this be.

    • @chrisstokes2020

      It sounds like you have a short circuit from your stove. I recommend unplugging the stove and try to reset the breaker. If it works, you need to have someone find the short circuit in your stove.
      Hope that helps.

    So my ignitor lights up but I get no flame. I do get gas to the top of my stove so it shouldn't be a gas problem. Can your ignitor glow but still be bad?

    • @chrisstokes2020

      Yes, you need to test the ignitor for amperage (AMPS) to test it correctly you will need a multi-meter that has a clamp and Amps, most oven ignitors (that are working/good) should reach amps of 3.2 to 3.4. If it is less than that the gas valve will not open. Which means your stove will not light/flame.
      Hope that helps.

    I experienced the same issue and I fixed. Though, now after a month of fixing the issue the stove lighter and oven stopped working. It appears that there is no electricity coming through. None of the stove igniters operating and the oven does not turn on. How do I troubleshoot? Thank you!

      You will need a multimeter to check voltage coming in to the range. You MUST check voltage SAFELY for 110 - 120 voltage. It is highly unlikely that EVERYTHING on appliance stops working all at once.
      Definitely, start with voltage (ie receptacle, plug, breaker etc). Hope that helps.
      Thanks Again

    I replaced the ignitor (3rd time in 6 years) but now it will glow hot and the gas valve opens, but still will not light! I waited a minute or so until the gas smell was too much and I turned the oven off and had to vent the house. So it is getting hot enough to open the valve but still not ignite. Any ideas? Previous times I replaced it worked fine, very easy fix. Not this time though. Appreciate any help, thanks.

      If the igniter is working as it should (it sounds like it is). I would recommend checking the burner tube for holes or to ensure it is not clogged. If so, clean with tooth picks, needle etc..
      Hope that helps.
      Thanks

      I took the burner tube off when I replaced the igniter, no holes other than what is supposed to be there. I did everything the same way as before, so I'm at a loss to why the gas valve opens.

    mine glows real bright but never seems to light the burner.....any suggestions

    • @chrisstokes2020
      @chrisstokes2020  5 лет назад

      You are getting gas on the top of the stove, right? Also, glowing bright to most people (if you are NOT an appliance tech) doesn't mean that the igniter is good. If you are getting/smelling gas when you turn the oven on, REPLACE the igniter. Also, check the burner tube for damage (large holes) and blockage.
      Hope that helps.
      Thanks

    • @chrisstokes2020

      I would recommend (SAFELY) checking your ovens burner tube. Sometimes that will have a small hole in them (other than the flame burner holes of course). If so, it will need to be replaced. DON"T FORGET TO TURN OFF THE GAS... FIRST!!
      Hope that helps.
      Thanks

    Hi Cris! My problem is-I turned oven on to pre-heat. Went back to check it. Igniter was glowing, but the kitchen smelled like gas(BAD!), and oven wasnt hot. Had to open all the windows. Tried it days later and it worked fine! But, now it does it 50% of the time(not get hot+ kitchen reeks of gas). What do you think?

    • @chrisstokes2020
      @chrisstokes2020  4 года назад

      If you have a multi-meter I would check the igniter for correct amps, need to reach 2.8 or higher to open gas valve every time. Also, check oven burner tube for blockage (burner holes clogged) or damage to burner tube (sometimes they will have a larger dime size hole in the side).
      Lastly, if all the above checks out, change the igniter. Hope that helps.
      Thanks

      Chris Stokes Thank you sir. Yes, I was thinking it must be the burner tube, since the gas valve seems to open, filling kitchen with gas. I didnt want to take it apart w/out knowing what to look for. I will let you know. Thanks again!

    What if the oven and the boiler igniters are not getting red

    • @chrisstokes2020
      @chrisstokes2020  4 года назад

      I would ensure that your oven thermostat is operating correctly. And test your igniters for ohms of resistance. Finally, ensure that you have correct voltage.
      Thanks

    Changed the igniter, no lite on the tube... Bad tube?...=0

    • @chrisstokes2020
      @chrisstokes2020  5 лет назад

      Well, not really. Is the igniter performing properly? If so, is there a hole in the tube? Is the tube blocked/obstructed (clean it)? Are you getting gas to the stove (check burners)? Are you getting gas to the oven? You will need to check the above areas first and then go from there. Hope that helps. Thanks

    OK - I have an oven with an electric igniter. Now when I turn the gas on for the oven - I am supposed to hear 2 pops in sequence (that is the igniter sparking), repeated a few times, and before that, I hear that gas going on. I will need to hear the poof after the sequence of these electrical pops - which is the deflagration of gas to its so-called blue flame. If I do not hear the poof - the igniter is likely faulty.

    You have an electric okay that's a no no no no I will use ceramic connectors not electrical tape

      He clearly says AFTER he puts the wire nuts on then he uses electrical tape ( the part usually comes with ceramic nuts)

      there is such a thing as high temp electrical tape

    • @Jeremiah6071
      @Jeremiah6071 4 года назад +2

      I don't see the point in using electric tape. The wire connectors are ceramic for a reason. I suppose it is fine if you leave the wires long enough to put through the hole and behind the heat shield, but it's unnecessary.
