The ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) primary assessment includes the mnemonic ABCDE: Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, and Expose. In the primary assessment, you continue to assess and perform an action as appropriate throughout. For example, If a patient does not have a pulse, CPR would be initiated immediately. You wouldn't wait to assess disability or exposure. ACLS will have many working parts and many of the interventions will happen simultaneously by other team members while assessments continue in order to expedite important care to successfully save the patient’s life.
