- Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger (恐竜戦隊ジュウレンジャー, Kyōryū Sentai Jūrenjā, Dinosaur Squad Zyuranger is a Japanese tokusatsu television series and the sixteenth installment in the long-running 'Super Sentai' metaseries of superhero programs. Produced by Toei and Bandai, it aired on TV Asahi from February 21, 1992 to February 12, 1993, with a total of 50 episodes.
It was the first Sentai series to have a regular Sixth Ranger, and the first to introduce the concept of sentient, living mecha-a theme that has been used frequently in the franchise ever since. It was also the first Sentai series to be adapted into an installment of the American Power Rangers series.
Footage from all 50 episodes was extensively used for the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.
This is Episode 1 "The Birth". Directed by Shohei Tojo and written by Noboru Sugimura. Original airdate: February 21, 1992.
It's a miracle of editing that they managed to use parts of this show to make their own version of it. They are completely different shows with some of the same characters, although written different.

The fact that the original Yellow Ranger's name is literally "Boi" makes the whole situation that much funnier XD
Yeah and the fact that in the American version the black ranger is a black guy and the the yellow ranger is of Asian descent was kind of a controversy even though they say it was just a coincidence.
@DannyDeLeon obviously I can see why people would give it weird looks but if the actual black man playing him says he didn't even realize until later and doesn't have an issue with it I'd say his opinion is the most important

They should have done a crossover between the Japanese and American rangers. . My mind would have been blown away.

There was an episode kind of, in Dino Thunder, you had the team watch an episode of the Japanese version, and claim that they were copying them, it was a bad hair monster, that causes greed
Man, this is a trip. Feels almost like a fever dream seeing all these designs and enemy characters de-contextualized into something so different.
This show is somehow both much darker and yet also more cartoony and kiddish at the exact same time. It’s wild.

Japan simply has more freedom with their shows. This means it can be darker and more cartoon like.

I love both Power Rangers AND Zyuranger and other Super Sentai and Power Rangers characters and shows. I’m not picky.

That's because Mighty Morphin was more watered down and goofy in comparison to Zyuranger. Every episode was exactly the same, and it got old really fast.

I actually prefer the introduction to the villains here as you actually get a sense that they're dangerous. The Power Rangers version literally feels like an abridged parody

This is like a fever dream I don't wanna wake up from 😮. Like I grew up watching and loving every single one of these character but just different. This was a trip and a half bruh😂. (Also I noticed everyone is surprised that the yellow ranger was a boy. I always kinda suspected cuz Trini never got a skirt but Kimberly did)
The american version, while near and dear to my heart, cut out a lot of parts that help make sense of show details: Why the protruding well got busted up (by Bandora/Rita's spell), how RIta's lair was created, etc.

I knew the original was Japanese, but didnt know they took all the scenes with the fighting from the orginals and dubbed over. Alwsys wondered where Yellow rangers tits disapeard too. Wr used to assume it was a stunt man. But its really the Japanese orginal. Quite a good idea really. Worked well haha

This is soooo much better than the American version. It’s amazing how the US used certain scenes, but with US actors and voice actors. The witch? We know her in America as Rita Repulsa. Lol!
I've been meaning to search for the Japanese version for so long to see how everything started. I'm glad I finally got to watch the 1st episode. However after almost 30 years of hearing the American voiceover on MMPR, I was having difficulty adapting to the original content. Quite interesting indeed
I Imagine in an alternate 1992 somehow they managed to get this show overseas and broadcasted on local television stations in America. It might have even gain a cult following!

@xtrmst_01 Exactly. Because Tokusatus are very popular in South America, and they have a cult following. Only in North America they decided to buy it and re shoot the scenes that aren't sfx and costumes.
What a way to start off the series that began the origin of what would become known as the Power Rangers. But very epic and amazing.
Also, funny how the Yellow Ranger is called "Boi". And Mei's the perfect name for the Pink Ranger.

@@vooshmoozik6185 when watching this as a kid. I had no idea also. But by 2008 . I discovered that power rangers is basically Sentai footage. And that it's been around longer than power rangers. So , for me, I've known this for almost 15 yrs now. I just started trying to find Sentai seasons. I'm done with power rangers.
@tsorf tbh in the later seasons they did start making more original footages.
@tsorf I agree with the fact that the original is always the better. I was just watching a video on white dino ranger and abarekiller and obviously the Japanese version sounded more cunning and sinister without even doing a deep voice.

I just started watching Power Rangers Dino Fury (US version) and the green ranger (a female) pulls off the skirt in the first morph. So in all the fight scenes (Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger) it makes sense why the green ranger doesn't have a skirt but the pink ranger does.

damn this seems like an alternate reality. Finally Rita's voice makes sense. The power rangers theme song is probably the only reason it became insanely popular in West
It wasn't just the theme. We liked the costumes and monster designs. It was also probably the most 90s thing ever made. (The juice bar and martial arts hangout?) Which was pretty cool in the 90s.
Also, the green ranger arc was the biggest TV moment of my childhood.
It was the toys. The most badass toys ever created.
Few reasons why this did well in America: 1) Fighting 2) Dinosaurs 3) Guns 4) Big Robots
It wasn't just the theme song, we fell in love with the costumes, the robots and the giant monsters. The bad acting with adult men and women in their 20s acting like high school kids, and the old man in the tube, with that annoying robot in the laboratory that says ai yi yi yi yi.
@@jerelminter Johnny Yong Bosch was actually 17 year old kid when he first played Adam in Power Rangers, so… and it’s normal for young adults to play teens. It happens in movies a lot. Older and newer.

As much as I love Power Rangers, I have to say this one is a little more mature and bolder in its approach.
Same thing happened with GoLion that Voltron was created from.. GoLion was way more dark and mature and they cut a lot of it out.. Most anime kids watched were much more mature in Japan and when 4kids or whoever dubbed it in the U.S. they would water it down for American audiences when doing the dubbing and turn it into dogshit.. They originally did it to One Piece and it was so very, very bad.. A lot of the 4kids shit wasn't even Dubs, they changed entire scripts and cut stuff in almost everything to the point where it changed much of the story..

The MMPR are so 90's while this looks like a relative future, I wonder what time are they supposed to be in this show... Also here they seem to already be some kind of demigods while the MMPR are just average teens that got powers
Zyuranger came out the year before MMPR came out. Zyuranger came out in 1992. And MMPR came out in 1993. And remember, MMPR is adapted from and based on Zyuranger and Dairanger.

It’s funny as in Japan aside from introducing a sixth Hero (Burai) which would become a mainstay of Sentai, Zyuranger was nothing special it was the 16th sentai, whilst in the US this became Mighty Morphin Power Rangers which whilst being the first Power Rangers series is also the most popular one

When u was younger I used to think these where super old since I was about 7, and now I’m 14, but my older brother used to have dvds of this and I used to always steal them to watch it, since it was never on tv in australia and I enjoyed it more than power rangers even though I couldn’t read some of the subtitles

I hope power rangers fan watch this series especially the mighty morphing fans, we would have gotten power rangers anyway, but we got this team to show up, and they are being represented in the new season as the red ranger, who’s not the leader, costume and powers are based off this season
Grew up watching Zyuranger thanks to Shout Factory because I found Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to be pretty repetitive and over the top. Of course, I'm not saying it's bad. It's just that Zyuranger of course knew what they were doing and PR was trying to imitate it for a sensitive American audience
Now this brings back memories when I was 3-5 years old shows. It’s the original mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It’s way better but I lived both.

Me too. It’s one of my favorites so far.
They did use the monster suits and design for the American series, obviously worked closely with the jp team, using most of the designs though it didn't appear the Rita character was all this time a japanese actress. The effects were quite good for a TV show, in Europe I never even saw rotoscoping and greenscreens used for anything but films.
I just had this crack idea of if in an AU where the main characters from both versions met that Boi and Trini would be intrigued about each other being the opposite gender and maybe even hit it off good. I kind of would like a ship between Boi and Trini to happen with both teammates teasing them both. Of course both would have to go back to their universes but keep each other in mind.

Yeah, you can't have Rita drop a building in Tokyo, Japan while they are fighting in Angel Grove, California.
They couldn't really use any of the white wizards scenes either, but creating Zordon made a lot more sense. Black Witch vs White Wizard wasn't a new idea in the 90's, but a space wizard and robot, that's a little bit of a different story.
It's really interesting how they managed to make a seemingly entirely new show out of this. I mean sure the UK and US office are similar and different but they aren't using UK footage in the US version. You know. Pretty interesting.
