  • By far the smallest cast I ever tried!
    I'm glad I made more than one at the time because I had some big air bubble in one of the flask that compromised the result.
    If you want to know more about my lost wax process here is my first video where I go through the details:
    • Lost Wax Casting Alumi...
    If you still have any question feel free to ask in the comments, I'll do my best to answer!
    This has been the valentine gift for my gf :) xoxo

    Great video! I used to make small bronze castings like this all the time. Working on a small scale is very meditative. A little Goo-Gone will also smooth away printing lines. Smells nice like orange oil too

    Casting stuff looks like fun, if I ever could get my ass to try some of the more basic techniques. This turned out awesome though, is it regular solder you used to fill in the hole?

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  6 лет назад +5

      Haha!! :'D Yes, plain old solder. I have been suggested in my last brass casting video to try that for holes and I have to say it works really well! Thanks guys.

  • @ManCrafting

    1/3 is that typical failure rate. I really was surprised. The whole time I was watching I thought this seems so much easier the lost foam casting with sand. I still think it may be. The one that survived looks amazing. Great video.

    • @ryanbarker5217
      @ryanbarker5217 6 лет назад

      i would say that you shouldn't have any failures beyond an errant glitch, but if only one out of three was serviceable then you got lucky once out of three times. a 33% success rate might be great if you're trying to hit a baseball, not so much if you're trying to make a product for sale. for a hobbyist, that's fine, at least the failures and scrap are re-usable, lol.

    Hi, great fun to watch you doing your thing as always but consider print those things in ABS, vapor smooth them, make a silicone mold of the model and cast wax in the mold. Should provide you with far better results and mistakes are not a big deal since you can reproduce the wax model quickly and cheaply. Moldable silicone isnt really expensive either

    • @sugarbooty
      @sugarbooty 6 лет назад

      Tedris Threed Silicone is decently expensive, a hard mold would also suffice. It would save on the expensive wax filament if he was making a lot of them, and save on print times in that case. Otherwise it's just faster to print the pieces individually

    • @tedristhreed6641
      @tedristhreed6641 6 лет назад

      SugarBooty a silicone mold for that size would cost approximately 3€...

    • @sugarbooty
      @sugarbooty 6 лет назад

      Tedris Threed I can't find any kits under $20, and they're half pound kits. Maybe, it depends how big you make the mold. However, they do have pre-made molds for much less

    • @tedristhreed6641
      @tedristhreed6641 6 лет назад

      i can buy molding silicone straight from amazon for 30 bucks (1kg). A mold for this tiny pendant should weigh max 100gr. thats how i estimated the 3€ cost. I am sure that you can get this kind of silicone everywhere since its pretty standard

    • @sugarbooty

      si è fatto apposta , quel filamento è fatto da un'azienda che si occupa solo di cera a perdere per stampi per gioielli , per odontotecnica e per metalmeccanica. Ora sono usciti con questo prodotto, Devo provarlo. Sinceramente non mi sono mai cimentato nella fusione dei metalli , ma è una tecnica che mi affascina parecchio , tanto più che associata alla stampa 3d ti permette di fare roba pazzesca :D

    Wow! That was amazing! I'm so inspired by this guy. Celtic blood in me veins where I just have to have a go at this at some stage. Even encourage me children to do the same....Would you be so kind and advise where did you source the necklace itself onto which this pendant is placed? I have a number of ideas involving a flypress where I make up a die and press the design on the work. Just finding it tricky sourcing a suitable necklace that is strong enough and looks the part. It has to compliment the work and the necklace you have used has just done that. Beautiful work man, I'm pumped!! Thank you!!

      Thank you! It's white vinegar :) I've looked for brass patina recipe online and most people seems to use ammonia for a fast patina, but I didn't had any on hans so I went for vinegar!

    • @stxrynn
      @stxrynn 6 лет назад +2

      That makes sense. I read about sealing up copper antennas (old ham radio ops from 20's thru 50's used plumbing supplies) and they used an ammonia wash, then soap and water, then mineral spirits to sort of seal it. Turned fresh copper into that brownish green color and stopped the ammonia from continuing to tarnish it.
      Again, nice work.

    Hi! Awesome video! Thank you for sharing your experiments with this method! Would you trust this method enough so that you would use precious materials like gold? Is it possible to make jewellery with less "wasted" material in the filling vents?

    • @lukasdon0007
      @lukasdon0007 6 лет назад

      The material is never 'wasted'; you can just recover the metal and reuse it for another cast ;)

    • @BlackBeardProjects
      @BlackBeardProjects  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks! I would not :')
      I mean, lost wax is used to make jewellery professionally but not the way I do it.
      As far as I know the metal is heated with an airtight electric furnace or with oxyacetylene torch in graphite or special ceramic crucible, the flask is degassed with vacuum and is heated to almost the same temperature as the metal and finally the pour is done not just by gravity but with a centrifugal machine or again with vacuum.
      With these advance methods vents are not even used I think! :)

    • @Hellsong89
      @Hellsong89 6 лет назад

      Okey interesting idea, but i take that didnt well as planned? At least from video i didnt see much chance.
      What i read about this method i think you should had used dark vinegar and dissolve some salt in 5 to 1 ratio. I think the missing key might be the salt, though i have no chemical know how on this matter and rather new on use of brass in anything. You did clean part probably good enough seeing you putting it in using wire and not your hands.. also havent though such use for soldering stand, gotta keep that in mind.
      Trow us a video if you find good solution on the patina.
