Cold Sweat is the mad note, son!🤠 I’m 51 years old now, but one of my first musical memories is standing in the living room when I was about three or four years old… JB came on a television show and did cold Sweat and it stopped me in my tracks. Been a fan ever cents. This is a really great one, David!
Jimmy Nolen played violin when he was a little kid then grabbed a guitar . He was playing blues and became a hired gun for Shuggie Otis . He even had his own band that backed blues artists up . He made a good amount of records on the Federal label blues but some are his original way of playing such as Jimmy's Jive will show .I highly suggest listening to that era of his playing he had an original sound. Then just like landing a prestigious Shuggie Otis job he was suggested to James Brown because the blue flame guitarist didnt want to anymore.Nolen so original he steps into a famous band and their sound changes . Before he really brought funk guitar he already did a whole career prior. When he left for a couple years with everybody else in James band he was in Maceos band. MUCH Respect to Dave as always this one was special . Nolen wasa true original
@@beeskneesplees Yes good call out i just saw i put that thanx to you don't know why i put Shuggie strange.Thank you very much for the correction much Respect
While working on 'some dance music'. to match up ZZ TOP stuff I worked on James Brown songs. Was really struck by how much some ZZ Top stuff matched up with James Brown songs. I used the James Brown stuff & mixed it in and, it worked great. Great insight. Other bands I listen to were 'The Ohio Players' and the Jackson 5'. They all had some great musical twists. Thanks Man
Wow. I just discovered you. I'm a competent player who has not studied everybody. You humbly fill the gap for me. No nonsense, no excessive ego. You've done the homework for us. What a refreshing RUclips page. I have subscribed.
Hey David! I’ve been watching you for awhile now and I have learned so much. Specially your Buckethead, and blues videos. I appreciate what you do. Thank you so much. 🤘😎🎸
I’m a much better bass player than a guitarist and I’ve always really liked licks like these. This is exactly the kind of stuff I want to play on guitar.
Great lesson, man! was that intro riff "Willie and the Hand Jive"? That tune was originally by Johnny Otis, but covered by Eric Clapton on the "461 Ocean Boulevard" album. Could you also, while digging into the funk bag, do "Chords of Steve Cropper" of Booker T. & the M.G.s, and maybe "Chords of Leo Nocentelli" of the absolutely fantastic New Orleans band, The Meters?
It's been years since I first heard that apparently Clapton always made sure to hook up with and jam with Jimmy Nolen when playing Atlanta. However, Nolen's widow publicly stated that working with the Godfather of soul made her husband's life miserable.. One the greatest unsung heroes - besides an article on Guitar player in 82/83 Nolen essentially only started acquiring visibility and credit after his untimely death
Plug straight into a Fender. A driven champ amp with the tone rolled back halfway and the volume worked w no effects. Any passive guitar signal straight in should nail it. A good reference is Steve Cropper’s setup from Booker T and the MG’s
Hi Dave... how about a chord play episode for Alice Cooper from love it to death , schools out, Poison from the Trash album... licks and or chords from John Frusciante, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman brothers ...thanks
Never heard of James Nolan. Always thought, the more you played in a rhythm part, meant you were more creative, and made you a better player. Wrong! In reality you are a distraction by diluting the beat and groove. Time to go to the school of funk.
Thanks for expanding my playing!

Not fade away Dave!
Awesome, David!!!! Thanks! His chords sound so cool!!!! Legendary stuff!

I think you mean Johnny Otis. Shuggie was his son and a monster player in his own right. Thumbs up on the info!

Funk has had me obsessed for the last 25 years...thanks for spreading the knowledge!
Don’t forget Alfonso (Country)Kellum was also playing guitar with Jimmy Nolen!!

Thank you so much. 🤘😎🎸
Great videos. Any interest in a David Lindley, Lowell George or Ry Cooder lesson?
Jimmy joined James Brown in '64 and stayed until the mid '80s with some breaks during that time.
worthy!
U are amazing. Thanks!
One or two tab books I have with cd
Covers alot of Jimi Nolens playing skill
When he was with James Brown.
Great Close up Lesson Here...👍
First time to your channel. Great tutorial my friend of funk guitar at its best.

Love this video and your playing is just fantastic. Any chance you could do a rig rundown sometime?

Check out the guitar line in a live video of Give it Up Ir Turnit A Loose put up by MOFUNKONE? I think. Soooo funky.
I think it's Jimmy.
I think the tune is 'Willie and the hand jive'
Beatles borrowed his sound on She’s a Woman
Oh yeah folks that lay the wah down over those chicken pick/scratch stuff is killer
👍

What tone settings, effects, etc. Do you recommend for these songs?

is that an American pro II Strat you're using in the video?
No messing up or you got a fine. 👀
Hand jive,

The Melvins use some weird chords it would be nice to make a lesson on the weird chords the melvins use
Rhythm guitar 0:25
Muff the strings doing the single notes
kinda sounded like “Hand Jive”
Txs Again MASTER Brewski... You might get WINGS ⚠️(Aerosmith)🤣
His nick name was "Chank"
