Thank you for this video! If you make a silk screen stencil with the htv - is it washable/re-usable or do you have to make a new one each time?

Jessica Gianni I wash and reuse them. MANY times. To wash them during decorating I gently rub my fingers over them under lukewarm water. Then I pat them dry between 2 dish towels. I do the same (but with a drop of dish soap) before putting them away.

Sorry to ask this here but I just bought a Cricut Explore Air 2 today and want to make my first plastic stencil but have no clue where to begin. Do you have a video for out of the box beginners? Thanks.

Kimberly G. Congratulations! No worries! I try to gear all of my videos toward a beginner, explaining terms and taking it step by step. A great starter project would be a simple background stencil like the stars in the 4th of July video. We also have a group on FB (same name as this page) if you aren’t already a member there. Lots of nice people and a great place to get help with your specific projects. You will find resources like a supply list there. You can even practice with copy paper until you get supplies. 😊

Kimberly G. Also, when you unbox and connect you will be prompted to make a started project. Mine was a simple card that said hello. I forget what I did but I messed it up lol.

I purchase “11 mesh” on Amazon. I have also purchased some 110 100% polyester from Hobby Lobby. Speedball brand silkscreen works as well.

@@paulettepatterson3174 I found the 110 in the fabric area on a bolt or spool. I think the Speedball is somewhere in the art area. If you aren’t already in my Facebook group (same name as this page) you might want to check it out. Lots of info and tutorials.

You call it a plastic stencil, but it looks like freezer paper. Can you clarify? Thanks :-)

SCLM B. SCLM B. At about 30 seconds I mention that if you want to make this image on a “plastic” stencil the image would need bridges. The material in the stencil frame is a white htv silk screen-white htv pressesd to a piece of silk. I don’t make my silk screen stencils in colored htv normally but for the purposes of the video white shows up well. On the left and right examples you are seeing copy paper. I hope this clarifies it better for you. If not, feel free to check back with me 😊

@@December2013 There are food safe stencil materials available. Cricut states on their website “Cricut Explore & Maker machines are not food safe, and cannot cut fondant or similar materials.” Since the stencils can be washed and aren’t meant to be eaten it is considered generally safe by the industry to use the cutting machines to facilitate in making them.

@@creatingcookiestencilsinde2261 but you are putting something (htv)that is in no way food safe and either airbrushing or using icing on it. I am aware you don't eat it, but they recommend against using htv on masks because it would be against your mouth and it's full of chemicals. Putting it on a cookie wouldn't be safe either. I would suggest using food safe plastic.

@@December2013 there’s good news on the htv. There IS food safe htv. This product is considered food safe under GRAS. www.heattransfervinyl.com/product/thermoflex-plus-frosty-clear/. It’s the adhesive on the Cricut that isn’t considered food safe. Since the stencil can be washed prior to use, many in the industry use the stencil as any other tool for accomplishing a design. Same with the craft plastic sold by Grafix. A few of their products are food safe. Again it’s the adhesive it touches while on the Cricut cutting mat that is not food safe. This is one reason we wash our stencils prior to use. As always, it’s up to each individual to research the subject and determine their own path. It’s important that you are putting out a product that you feel right about. I hope this information is helpful to you.
