It's brilliant that it is/was open to the public but not like this. Its going to disappear literally chipped away at by well meaning tourists. The way it's being utilised is wrong because it's not protecting its asset properly. A three D detailed layout of the structure inside and out. A area maped out for the public to walk and observe. Then other access and what can be seen but not walked on or touched by hand. This to preserve the structure for prosperity for all.

Chipped and graffiti now carved in them. Just devastating. I visited Turkey in 2013 and went to Ephesus, at the entrance it was crazy with sellers which was fine. Once inside the site, it was beautiful, preserved and no rubbish. It was how an ancient city can remain intact in modern times.

And why is that other than blatant racism? Hegra, the second largest city of the Nabatean Kingdom, is even deeper into the Arabian peninsula and features the same rock carved architecture with the Arabs' names engraved as the executing craftsmen. I don't think the 'Romans' or 'Greeks' would venture so deep into the peninsula. Sure a lot of the architecture is influenced by neighbors given that that the region itself is where civilizations meet, but saying that the natives didn't carve it out is goofy.

Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was the End of those before them? They were superior to them in strength. …. ‘’An impressive scene greets the traveller when the multi-coloured sandstone formations of the most famous ghost town in the world looms up before him. Added to this is the mystery of the city’s history as well as the expectation that, according to Revelation 12:6, it might serve as a refuge to a remnant in Israel when the Antichrist will order the worldwide genocide of Jews, lasting for the last 3½ years of the tribulation period. Despite the absolute desolation of Petra its role in history is not yet past’’

OMGosh, remember when they told the world the Pyramids were built as Tombs , not true of course as we now know.
Petra was a Glorious Trade Rout Empire, where the Arabs did their Trade on Land. Then the Arabs decided to go further afield and trade by Sea ⛵... So Petra fell and the Romans defaced the magnificent fecade on the buildings.
The Treasury is NOT as they say, you can see it behind the guy narrating @ 22:06 mins.
and non of the buildings were Tombs, much of Petra has still to be discovered.
From Petra to Egypt and Syria it was known as the Kings Highway.
There is an amazing video, a sort of advertising professional video - Welcome to Petra - it makes ref. to Cleopatra and many amazing things. Remember Petra was an Empire.

Prophet Muhammad was from Petra and an idol worshipper until he came in contact with the Nabatean Christians especially the tribes like Ghassanid, Lakhmid, Banu Kalb, etc.
Even his wife's uncle Warraqa Ibn Nafwal was an Ebionite Christian who lived near the path from Petra to Aram (Syria).

He was never an idol worshipper albeit the Pre-Islamic Quraysh tribe worshipped idols. He used to find solace in a cave at Mount Hira', away from the worshipping and rituals of the tribe.

But when it comes to worship....
    The Nabataeans promoted false worship.
    How can we be sure??
Long before the Nabataeans came to Petra... Almighty GOD YHVH advise mankind not to worship images, or carve them... EXODUS chapter 20
Certain areas and some forms of worship including and demanded human sacrifice.

This documentary is better than most, as it shows more than just the same few buildings, but I have always wondered, "If it was a city, where did the people live?" The focus on tombs make them seem to be as obsessed with death as the Egyptians. I'm only half way through, so I thought, "Surely they will get to the domestic areas, but, I think you have answered question.
