I believe the reason why this alarm is so terrifying is because the sound starts to fade away. So when your brain first hears the alarm fade away you're probably thinking "great, that annoying sound is finally going away". However, not only does the alarm loop itself, it also starts off very loud. Not only that, you are guaranteed to have your eardrums shook from hearing the first few beeps. So basically it's like putting somebody in a dungeon and torturing them, then you let them out making them feel like they are saved only to throw them back in the dungeon for torture again.
Also your brain has learned that every time you hear the sound then you will go through something bad (like waking up) this is true for a lot of things. For example if you tell a dog “good boy” every time you give it a treat for a long time, eventually you can just say “good boy” and the dog will think it’s going to eat a treat so they get happy. In this case it’s the opposite but it works both ways
