    Crikey! That is one tied fly! I don’t think I’ll be trying that one any time soon. Fantastic looking though. I just feel it’s a shame to make all that beauty and then let the fish gnaw on it! lol. Thank you for another little beauty Davie.

    Hands down, one of the the best tied wet Mayflies I have ever seen. You're handling of materials/ technique is something to behold. I still cannot make UNI 8/0 thread do what you do and I've been tying getting on for 20 years. Can never seem to get it moist and workable the way you do, no matter what wax or how much of it I use.

      Hi Slick Roode,
      It's very kind of you to say this as it does mean a lot to me, If I have to be honest I do need to tye a couple before I get the proportions right...I would try and use as little wax, as you can easily over do it, run your fingers through the thread to remove any excess as this will help....
      All the very best Davie...

      Thanks for the advice. Would there be any chance you could give me a link(s) to where you get your French Partridge and natural, undyed Seal's fur from? Your French P seems to always of a high, well marked quality. All I seem to get when I buy a bag of Seal's fur in bulk nowadays is 50/50 fur and sawdust.

    That's a lot of hackle, most I've seen so far.
    Fly looks good, I wonder what the fish think.
    Thanx 4 sharing this video Davie.

    Class tying Davie. Looks a tough pattern to tie. I will have to stock up on materials and give it a go. Have tied only huge (5/0 to 7/0) flies for pike and sea fishing in the past year or more, so this will be a good challenge 😃

    I'm quite fond of the Raymond, quite a heavy dressing but this one is more pleasing to my eye. I don't have much use for them (NE England) though I do like to tie them. Thanks again Davie!

    Amazing... however as a newbie to flying i now realise 2 things. 1 I have long way to go. 2 Should have started earlier in life.
    1 and 2 apply to most things in life. Looks almost effortless when tied by yourself. Thanks Lewis

      Hi Lewis,
      Not all flies are like this and many patterns that catch best can be the simplest to tye...I wish you well and enjoy tying and fishing your own flies....

    Fantastic-looking fly! I love the colours. I'll be in Assynt this year during the mayfly time (hopefully) and I'll have a few of this style tied up to give them a try up there on the bigger lochs. I reckon that what works on Corrib and Sheelin should work on Veyatie and Cam, but we'll see.

    • @7cColin
      @7cColin 9 лет назад +1

      Colin Macaulay I did tie some of these up for Assynt last year but the mayfly hatch was late and although I did try my gosling-like efforts I had limited success. Maybe this year I will hit it right and catch the mayfly.

    Wow Davie, this will certainly be a test of my tying! You don't ask much do you?
    If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I'd not believe that many hackles could be tied on one third the hook. I may have to give myself more room and if I can end up well I will just have a slightly bigger head. I don't think I can fit that many hackles in so small an area, but now that I've seen it I am going to give it a go, just to see if I can do it. All the best, and thanks for the challenge! Sean

    You truly are a joy to watch. I can't wait to give this one a try. I am curious, how many years have you tied flies???? ;-) I hope someday I can be as good........ I just last week taught my five yr old nephew how to tie some flies.... I was a very proud auntie that day :-) I hope to get him hooked. Thanks again for all the awesome videos. Take care, lindsay.......................

      Hi Lindsay,
      I started tying flies in February 1983, my mothers side of the family tied flies so I watched my uncles tying when I was very young..It's great to hear that you are teaching your family to tye for as you know it's a great hobby which you never get tired of doing and you never stop learning...I'm glad you enjoy them...

    Lovely fly davey, bit of an ask at my stage of tying! Strugle to find good quality dyed mallard. Venierds seem to be very bright with there colours. Any ideas?

      Hi Ben Greenshields,
      At times I dye a lot of feathers myself to get certain colours, you may like to try Cookshill Tackle as they may have colours to suit your patterns...I'm glad you liked the fly...

    Of all your wet Mays I always find myself, time and time again, coming back to this fly. The confidence you have in your ability and more impressive, the speed and execution of that ability is something to behold. A masterclass of tying. I may have asked you this before, apologies if I have, but where do you source your small mallard flank or breast feathers to suit this fly. I find them very hard to get anywhere, even when I specifically ask for the smaller size and send suppliers this video as the example of what I want. I end up getting a bag of medium feathers which are not suited to this fly as fibres are too long to give correct proportions . I’ve resorted to just using the large Spey type mallard flank feathers but they are too “square”, for want of a better description, in shape and bunch together when rolled dabbler cloak style. If you could provide me with a resource for what I’m looking for I’d be most grateful. Trying to nail this fly proportion wise has been an expensive annoyance.

      Hi William Dooley,
      I have to be honest this pattern is certainly not for the average tier and it certainly tests me as well. I used to buy bulk packets of feathers from Cookshill which I did get by with though the easiest way to get the right feathers is to buy a full Mallard skin so that you can get the feathers you want as this is what I do now...Thanks for all the kind words about the way I tye as I really do appreciate them...

      @@DavieMcPhail thanks for the reply, I'll do as you suggest and buy a skin or two. I really appreciate the information. Gentleman.

    • @ballzblue22
      @ballzblue22 5 лет назад

      One more question, if you don't mind. Would I be better off to buy several skins and dye them the colours I want or would there be sufficient feathers of the correct size on a single skin that I could pluck off and dye these colours. I'm assuming individual skins would be a better option to get the most of what I need but, of all the skins I've ever used I've never handled a full Mallard skin, so I simply don't know. Once again, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi Davie
    Wicked fly once again. I was looking for a mayfly you tied i think was last year, tied as a dun i believe, it clearly showed the different colours in the tail and behind the head hackle. my question is do you still have a post anywhere of that fly as i have forgotten how to tie it and the corrib looms at the end of may.. your help in this matter will be much appreciated.
    best regards...
