I really appreciate these kind of videos Kraig! I have been watching you for a really long time and past year in 2024 I lost ALOT of weight. You inspired me to start hiking and this fall & summer I will be hiking a ton in the beautiful forests and mountains here in Norway. I havent really hiked before and I have havent been in a tent since I was a little kid, but will definetly try overnight hiking solo at some point.
I’m also a fan of the backcountry ramen! Highly, highly recommend trying packets of sesame oil instead of olive oil. That sesame flavor on the ramen is just incredible.
Do you eat ramen as a meal for the end of the day or just like a mid day snack? I feel like at night after a day of trekking you should need a bit more than nodles. Idk
@ it’s my end of day meal! A pack like the Shin Ramen is 570 calories + 140 calorie oil packet, so that’s 710 calories right there. A Mountain House Pad Thai is 760 calories per serving.
Couldn’t expect to see Sin ramyeon and sea weeds here. Glad to see this as a Korean hiker. Any plan to hike in S.Korea? We have nice mountains such as Seoraksan and Bukhansan. Happily help you if you need anything as a Korean hiking youtuver :)
You got me on the thumbnail with the Shin Ramen. Shin Black is more expensive and less spicy, but the noodles are healthier and I think tastes better. That seaweed is more for eating with rice. If you buy dried kombu used for making dashi or stock, you can throw that into the ramen and it's actually healthy as a vegetable. It's featured in Neoguri, a Shin ramen alternate.
I've always hiked in shorts on all but the coldest days. If I don't, I overheat, and I hate the feeling of wet fabric on my legs if I'm going through morning overgrowth that hasn't dried out yet. I'm also amazed there are still people who haven't made the switch to trail runners from heavy boots yet. I did that about 10 years ago as I went through the process of lightening my whole load and haven't looked back.
How do you do when it's been raining and your socks and shoes get wet? How many pair of socks do you bring with you? I'm considering making a switch but hesitant
@@Dilleyk Depends on the forecast. If it looks like a bunch of rain i'll probably bring three pairs of socks. If not, two. I usually don't bring river crossing shoes like Kraig did here with his Crocs. If it's sunny, I just wear my shoes without socks and put socks back on once across. They dry very quickly as I walk. If socks are wet at camp, I wring them out and then sleep with them under me. Usually dries them. If not, wear the dry second pair, and by the end of that day the damp ones are probably dry.
FYI there won't be mould in your sleeping pad - it's something you hear as a rumour, but you can actually find youtube vids where they cut open pads after years of use. What may look like mould from the outside is usually just the Alu heat reflector flaking off inside.
As a korean fan, i didn't expect to see shinramen and seaweed here😂😂 They are one of the best selling ramen in korea too.(Yes, you can be proud of your taste) And i also happen to have them for my lunch today! Anyway, hope we can meet on the trail one day so that i can share my korean foods🙏🙏
Kraig, I bought the Sony 20mm f1.8 lens based on one of your gear reviews. Best photo purchase in a long time. It’s been my go-to lens for backpacking trips in the Cascades, Rockies, Norway and more. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Cheers!
Got the 55L Hyperlite and love it. It’s definitely the better size if you want to do 2-3 or more night trips + have camera gear. Great video as always. Watch these every year 🎉
Haze Outdoors did a recent video where he examined the inside of his 10 year old inflatable mattress that he had been primarily inflated by breath.. Was surprised to find zero mold..
Better alternative to the befree-filter: Pure Clear Filter from the UK. Because it has actived carbon and filters way more. A friend of mine got sick using befree on areas with agriculture around. I would not use the befree in europe in regions with cattle around. Think not a big deal in the US or higher elevation areas.
Emphasis on the trail runners over boots. Nothing makes me sigh harder than people saying you need clunky heavy boots to hike when you could be moving like a ninja in trail runners
Some of us have weaker or older joints. And aren't hiking every week(end) but mostly sit in the office. Heavy and clunky are no value, but supportive and risk minimizing are. Each to their own.
If you can wear trail runners that is great, but some of us need more structure either due to ankle problems or knee problems. I happen to be one of them. So, there is no one way.
Thanks for posting this man, great timing. Been doing day hikes in the National Parks for the past 7 1/2 years and planned on getting into backpacking this year, starting with Olympic National Park in June. This is super helpful, much appreciated!
I'm getting very subtle audio artifacts with the mic in this vid. I'm not sure if there was another mic recording at the same time or perhaps an interface configuration that's creating it, but something sounds off with the SM7B and I'm sure it's not my headphones. Unsolicited nit-pick, sorry.
Your brother hikes way more than you?? Also, doesn't Patagonia do repairs as well? I'm sure that they would try to repair your joggers. Likely wouldn't be as good as a repair as getting a new pair of joggers though. I highly recommend the Durston Kakwa 40 (or 55 if you need more capacity). I love that it has a super lightweight frame that helps tremendously.
Yeah Kurtis hiked the PCT and CDT and lives in Alaska so he always outside somewhere. It's too annoying to send in stuff for repairs even if it's free. I checked the Durston and it seems pretty chill. If anyone from the company wants to send one my way I'd be happy to test it out!
@@joshuasaddlemire6721 europe and middle east. The last time i fell into acacia gully and my legs looked like i got cozy with a mountain lion for half a year.
@@mezmerya5130 makes sense it’s really rocky through there. I hike in the Adirondacks where it’s humid, muddy, rocky, roots and straight up the mountain.. honestly almost no walking just straight climbing so shorts helps me sweat and be more mobile. If you’re looking for amazing hiking pants then 686 makes a phenomenal pant. Look for the anything pants
No Kraig , once your Tent gives up ypu wanna Upgrade to the Dan Durston Xdome 1+ Not to the Nemo Hornet Osmo :p Its the cheaper and better Tent than the Hornet

Was literally just watching the one from last year today and was like "Wait a minute shouldn't the next one be out by now"
Same!
Team Crocs for the last decade, I love them. Always love gear videos, can't wait to see the adventures this year!
All the best! For your upcoming hikes, it was pretty informative video.
Ah the yearly gear list! Always awesome!

@ individual needs can of course vary though. I’m personally a pretty small guy so I don’t need a 2,000 calorie dinner. But some people might!

I am very curious about the total weight of your gear/backpack
Wow! I love your hiking gear, and seeing Shin Ramyun there made me so happy! 🍜😍 Nothing beats a hot bowl of ramen after a hike! ⛰🔥

totally loved that lens. the f/1.8 gives art vibes but I eventually found 20mm a little too tight compared to my 16mm. glad it's working for ya

good to hear
So glad to hear that someone has said 'you don't need hiking boots'
Team trail runners FTW
I like to hike in shorts too!
여기서 신라면을 보게될 줄이야
So nice to see a Shin Ramen in the list! By the way, in my country the same pack costs a little more than a buck per pack :)
Thorlo socks are excellent too
😊😊😊
"...hold them in your hands, set up your camera for that cool water crossing shot..." lol
I think eating ramen in the mountains is the truth.
Shin Ramyun

Do you bring any specific power bank while hiking? I’ve been trying to look for one that has a nice balance between weight and capacity.
SLONIK also my favorite headlight!!! Awesome gear.
신라면이랑 김 챙겨가세요? 갑자기 친근하게 느껴지네
Shorts are great for hiking 👍🏽
Merrell Hydro Mocs over the Crocs.
Wild, I just bought shin ramen, salt & vinegar pistachios, and seaweed for an upcoming trip yesterday lol
high five
Do you recommend trekking poles for someone who never used trekking poles before? I have tried them but every time I was better without

Can you clean dishes with the wilderness wipes ?
Have you ever tried the sea-to-summit light sleeping mat? Thinking of making a purchase
Awesome video as always every year 🔥
Yeah seems good but not as warm as the therm-a-rest one. Take a look at the R-value I guess. Just depends on what temp you'll be in verse the weight

Kraig! I liked this alot. Can I ask why you don't care for hiking boots? Is it anything more than weight and quickness of laces?
The lighter the foot the better. I don't ever need crazy protection so there's nothing good about hiking boots.
Hi! May I ask, when you're traveling for your international trips, do you check in your bag? Or is it all carry on?
I'm getting very subtle audio artifacts with the mic in this vid. I'm not sure if there was another mic recording at the same time or perhaps an interface configuration that's creating it, but something sounds off with the SM7B and I'm sure it's not my headphones. Unsolicited nit-pick, sorry.
Looking forward to your K-2 base camp trek. Welcome to Pakistan 🇵🇰
I've been blowing up my one sleeping pad by mouth for 12 years... Haven't had a problem (except I may get a new one just for weight considerations)
I've wondered how you don't freeze your legs off wearing shorts around snow and ice but i guess as long as you keep moving must be alright.

Serious question: do you really get enough calories with instant noodles when doing long days?
Each packet has the same if not more calories than most mountain house dehydrated meals so I guess so
just add Idahoans mashed potatoes and some olive oil to the ramen to add some calories (ate this for 5 months on the PCT)
Thanks guys 🙏
If you do end up cleaning that blow up pad a how to video would be nice lmao
sounds like a viral hit
i have a memorable scar for each time i've worn shorts hiking. for me it never ended well, but i guess you do different things different way.
What’s your hiking terrain and area that you mostly hike in? I exclusively wear shorts unless it’s a winter hike.. also! Each scar is a memory!
