Had Hayden not done Star Wars and started with Life as House he would have probably had Ryan Gosling's career. The Notebook producers already said they were looking for him to play the lead opposite to Kate Beckinsale, but didn't like Attack of the Clones making them go for Gosling. So mostly all of his films have been brought down by the toxic fans that Star Wars has. Luckily they came to their right mind and he came back and got redemption. He should start acting in more franchise films because his managers obviously can't pick the right projects. But if he can continue with Star Wars and maybe do Marvel or DC it could be really good for him.
Holy shit, he got the short end in pretty much every role, whether by critics or fans reactions, or by horrible writing/bad scripts, or even just cancelations or production stalling. Poor guy, he has a real talent, and it's a shame that he never got a real chance to shine unobstructed, once.

Hollywood is totally F'd up. It's better to be a character actor, than to try to be a leading man or woman. Actors who are really remembered after they're gone are those who had smaller parts in lots of movies, not huge parts in a few movies.
Hayden didn't "beat" Leo Di caprio for that role, but instead Leo turned down the part. Actually, before the casting procees even started, Leo had a meeting with George Lucas himself, and after Leo took a step aside, they had to do a casting process where Hayden had to go through the entire thing "beating" other candidates, but by then Leo wasn't even an option anymore. Apparenlty Leo's reasons were related with him wanting to work with bigger names such as Johnny Depp and Robert De Niro. At that point of his career he didn't want to remain being just the pretty face guy in hollywood so the possibility to have a bigger role in this franchise would definitely type-cast him. In time it seems to be the right choice for him. But still it's a pity por Hayden cause he did what he could considering that the character of anakin was poorly written.
