This is a step through guide to replace your Joysticks
This will void warranty from what Valve has described. Please understand if you open the steam deck up in anyway it will possibly void warranty . This also applies if you have upgraded your hard drive inside. We as buyers only have one year warranty from original purchase date.
See the warranty link for further information | Read under '1.0 Limited Warranty' :
help.steampowe....
There warranty does not cover drops or screen cracks. Only internal items (defective internal items, i.e. fan, battery, hard drive, sticks, ect and workmanship.
That said there is no current mechanism ,such as, void tape or anything like that showing out right a steam deck has been opened. Only the ability to argue that the clips have been pulled open and the metal tape on the shielding being wrinkled.

Probably the most professional, thorough, and to the point instructional video I have ever seen. Thank you
You're very welcome, thanks for the awesome complement
Peak tutorial. No dilly dally, straight to the point.
Thanks so much for your comment! I try to make it as to the point as possible. I feel like no one these days has time for fluff
Thank you for this video! My steam deck fell and the one of the joy sticks popped out halfway. I wasn’t able to just pop it back in so I used your video to fix it from the inside. Thank you!
I'm happy I could help and that you got the stick back in it's proper home 😊 hope you've been having lots of fun with the Deck
Love these videos. Straight into it without a life story.
Thanks so much for this awesome comment!
very nice and clear video, thank you
i don't need the info, but i love the fact that now i know how to fix it if my sticks are broken on my deck
you're welcome, thank you for the comment :)
fixed my shit in 10 minutes watching the video once. thanks bro
No problem man, happy I could help
Thanks for this so much never did one of these before but you made it look super easy. Recently he left joy con on the original steam deck started drifting driving me crazy so I ordered replacements and a kit
I'm happy after checking out my video that it helped you gain the confidence to do it yourself. I understand that feeling of the stick drift driving you crazy. I hope it goes super smooth with you. The huge thing to remember is removing the micro SD card if you have one. I've gotten so many comments that people have been rushing through the beginning of the video and they almost break their micro SD card. I do wish you the best of luck though but if you follow my steps you'll have your steam deck ready to go in no time
@@RetroRepairYT thank you so much I watched your video 10 times. Very first time ever opening up an electronic! It was a success the new controllers work great and again can play comfortably my first person shooters. Thank you again subscribed! Went exactly as per you video and made sure had the right screwdrivers. What really helped was the point to mention what the ribbon should look like when in.
Thanks for letting me know what happened and I am happy to hear all went well and I was able to help you out on a fix that you have not preformed yourself. What you did was very key though, watching and analyzing before you try anything. You very much have a good head on your shoulders. Thanks for the sub I do appreciate it. I am happy that ribbon part help because when I originally did it I felt that specific step could be miss understood quickly if not shown properly. Overall I am so happy you could get back to what you love, the games :) thanks again for your comment and your sub have an awesome day !
@@RetroRepairYT yeah the ribbon was the most nerve wrecking but following your steps I knew I was good when it look like yours. Thanks again and look forward to maybe trying a hard rice update lol
No problem at all, I am so happy I could help and if you do the hard drive update. I swear you will wonder why you didnt do it sooner because it feels so good installing whatever you want no mater the space (withing reason) on the steam deck
Great instructional video! Amazing editing that's to the point!
Thanks so much for the complement
You did such a nice job with this video! Kudos
Thank you so much for the kind words. I appreciate you 😊
Great video. Just ordered new sticks!
Where’d you get that facedown stand starting at 0:32?
Those sticks are still installed in my deck and running great ! I hope you like them :) . I make them, its an original design crated by me. I sell them on my etsy www.etsy.com/RetroRepairYT/listing/1417572981/steam-deck-jiggy?Copy&ListingManager&Share&.lmsm&share_time=1683818749208
I won my Steamdeck for less than 4 months and my left stick started drifting :( i really hope valve fixes it or compensate me in any way
Needless to say I'm really really happy that repairing the sticks on the steam deck is way easier than fixing a joycon
I hope they help you out too! They'll most likely tell you just mail it into one of their repair places. Yeah it's not hard at all. Luckily. They really made a good device to work on
@@RetroRepairYT after contacting Valve it turns out the game 'gunfire reborn' causes the drift and my deck is fine ( i really didn't knew that could happen )
@@carolusrex9138 interesting, then the steam deck updates will handle the fix eventually. Makes sense and its software base so someone coded it honestly anything can go wrong but can be fixed with a patch. Super happy to hear there is nothing wrong with your deck :)
Is it necessary to disconnect the battery and to drain it to below 25%?
I would say if you are working on anything deeper than the joysticks then yes
For ssd replacement is this a good tip?
@@johnboy4955Yes
Valve is so fucking goated for designing the steam deck like this
I agree 100%! They let us work on stuff like this amazing
Looks nice and easier to work on.
compared to other handhelds and other devices on the market it is so easy. It feels I really own the device I bought rather than the company keeping it under lock and key
If your steam deck has type B can you replace it with a type a?
I don't recommend it , you can lose the capacitance function of the sticks ( steamdeck will not sense you placing your thumbs on the analog sticks)
Great video straight to the point and very helpful. As someone who worked in automation before this all I needed to do it myself sub definitely earned.
I thank you for your awesome comment, and thank you so much for the sub I am happy I could help in a straight to the point fashion
I just bought a steam deck in Mexico but the Y axis does not work (up and down movements) and I would not like to have to send it for service because I will have to spend on shipping. The X axis works well, the crosshairs, pad and external devices also work well. Do you think that the problem of lack of movement of the Y axis should be solved only by purchasing one set of sticks and installing it or could another part be involved in this problem?...please, if any of you can light me
from what your explaining it sounds like replacing the stick should fix your issue. In my option if the Steamdeck was not in a case prior to you purchasing it the sticks would be the first parts to fail on the hand held.
Take for instance if the deck was placed in backpack and not secured properly another item in the backpack could bump the deck and damage a stick or a previous owner could have drop it in a back pack from the top of it and the momentum of the deck could have forced the stick to get snagged on something in the deck's path to the bottom of said backpack.
Overall, now thinking this out I find it a very high possibility that changing out the sticks will fix your issue.
@@RetroRepairYT thanks a lot bro, i apreciate your answer and the time that you take 4 explain me ♥️
No problem at all dude, I'm happy I could help illustrate it for you. I find it is better to understand if that type of example is expressed
I noticed you didn't press the small calibrate buttons on the back or is it not necessary?
These are a direct replacement from ifixit. I don't remember that button being on the joystick board. On the other hand I do remember them being on the hall effect sensor version of the joysticks. If there is a button on the direct replacement sticks from ifixit. I did not calibrate them on when installing the new sticks
@RetroRepairYT Thanks for replying! Sorry I didn't clarify where the buttons are located, it is more to the side next to where the ribbon is. It's a very small button where you need a pointy object to press it. But I'll try your way.
Are these Hall effect joysticks or regular ones like the default sticks
These are the regular ones
I'm working on a video that's for the Hall effects Joysticks. It will show how to soldering/install and configuration
honestly its nice to have parts available but if im gonna spend money id rather actually fix the issue than just delay it so id replace with gulikit hall effects rather than anouther doomed to break resistive pot joystick
i got my steamdeck wet. the left joystick is spazzin out. Now ive ordered a new one from ifixit. correct one and everything. I replace it. Now its only registring left - right bur no up and down.
I open it up again and scrath the ribbon cable a little bit. now its the opposite. up and down works but no left - right.
help please. can i order a new ribbon cable somewhere
Thanks for your comment, I'm not sure where to get a ribbon cable at, but I did run into this Reddit post that may help you.
I do wish you the best of luck

Thank you Sir!
No problem, happy I could help
The page has two options to buy, type a and b, how do I know which one to buy?
I got you, to understand which replacement thumbsticks you need, navigate to Settings → System → Steam Deck Controller ID. If the Controller ID starts with “MEDA”, that device uses a Type A thumbstick, then this joystick is perfect for you. If the Controller ID starts with “MHDA”, that device uses a Type B thumbstick.
I noticed that your resolution is different, is it 1200p?
Maybe 🤔 1080p the footage was captured by a razer ripsaw
What’s the difference in type a and b now I have to check mines 😂
I believe its about the capacitance type. Which has to do with the steam deck knowing when you place your thumb on the stick.
So easy to do as well .
Awesome video thank you so much.
No problem at all, thanks for watching !
Thanks I successfully replaced it myself. It actually wasn't that hard at all
No problem, I'm happy valve made it easy for us to swap things. I'm glad I could help
how to send to indonesia.. my joystick broke
I'm not sure if ifix it cannot send it I suggest trying Amazon
You didn’t remove the battery ? Lol
You really dont need to, only if you go in deeper such as removing a hard drive or fan
OMFG its so easy
I know right, finally accompany that lets us do things ourselves
Fuck that if there are two kinds of sticks that only work with their respective variant than I will throw my deck against my wall fuck steam...
It is quite frustrating, I can only speculate this was due to the part shortage and this could be one possibility to have enough units at it's launch of Feb 2022
