More about the accents in French, accent aigu, accent grave, circonflexe et le tréma, some change the sound of the letter, how to know if a word needs accents?
Woow!! this is so cool!! I just started to study French like two weeks ago and this is amazing! My native language is Spanish and I know some English and something I learnt is that you better get the basic grammar since the beginning so you understand better when things get complicated in the next levels.. This was an amazing video, now I will be able to distinguish some of this exceptions while reading my books and practice the right pronunciation since the beginning. Thank you very much!! God Bless you!
Merci Pascal, vos ressources sont toujours outils et facile à comprendre. je les recommande à n'importe qui a un but de approfondir son francais. je suis votre chaîne avec fidelité depuis deux ans et j'admette elle m'a aidé beaucoup gagner la terre avec cette belle langue. Merci encore!
Merci, Pascal! Very interesting observation about the circonflexe coming from the letter "s"! It helps a lot to see even more connections between different languages, like "nôtre < nostra", "jeûne < жизнь".
Merci, je suis de Mississippi, USA. Je parle Francais, mais seule un peu. Mais, je espere parler meillure dans la avenir !!! J'aime Francais tres beacoup. Merci tres beaucoup pour le tres bien RUclips video. Je ne sais pas le mot pour "video" en Francais, lol...si je espere je suis correct. Tu es un tres bon enseigneur pour Francais!
for the word aiguë the tréma is to show that the u is pronounced so that it is pronounced like 'èg'. Actually, l'Académie (as much importance as you may give them) in 1990 said that this should be changed to be written as 'aigüe' instead to emphasize the fact that is is the u that is being pronounced where it otherwise wouldn't have been. speaking of l'Académie, I was wondering what your opinion of them was, I was asked a French person and they responded "l'Académie est une rigolade"
Learn French with Pascal I guess if you ask someone who speaks bad French his opinion about a dictionary, you will have the same answer:le dictionnaire est une rigolade
I study French this year and when we do orthographe I can’t understand the teacher when she pronounces the different accents expecially at the letter e , I have seen so many videos but still I don’t know when I should put accent grave or aigu
Could it be that le tréma on ë has had a similar role like ï and ü? In the words Noël and Citroën for example you pronounce the letters o and e separately. Now I don‘t know if you normally speak oe separately in french, but there are a lot of languages where you make a different sound when the letters oe are together, so it has helped me remember to pronounce them separately thanks to le tréma.
It’s still hard to remember all of the accents and how they’re supposed to sound like depending on the words but nice video! It’s well organized and easily comprehendible.
The French orthography is such a pain. I always quit on French because of it. I think I will end up learning the language with the International Phonetic syetem.
Learn French with Pascal I didn’t expect you would reply to me! De rien! It’s me who should thank you for helping me keep going on my way to learn French!
Je voudrais juste dire une chose, l'accent aigu ne signifie pas forcément que l'on doit prononcer le e de manière plus aigu (comme dans cheminée), il peut aussi se prononcé comme un e grave (comme dans événement ou école). Le è s'utilise uniquement si la syllabe d'après est muette (la plupart du temps à la fin du mot ou en conjuguant des verbes en -er au futur). L'accent n'indique pas la manière de le prononcer, attention.
A tréma is placed on the e on aiguë because otherwise the u will be silent (u preceded by g or q is silent unless at the end of word). aiguë = eh-goo [ɛgy] aigue = ehg [ɛg] langue = lanhg [lɑ̃g] languë = lanh-goo [lɑ̃gy]
Are accents on CAPITAL LETTERS in French optional or compulsory? Eg A l'école, il fait des études. - ou - À l'école il fait des études. Are both correct in standard French?
with the difference between a /a/ and â /ɑ/, isn't it true that in the modern general French accent the two sounds have merged and are now pronounced only as /a/. Does your dialect distinguish these? And if so, what dialect is it? thank you
William Randall some people speak like that, merging all the sounds, especially in Paris, however l'Académie Française says that when a confusion is possible, we have to make the difference.
Thank you very much! Just one question: Why does "très" have a written accent symbol? It ends on a consonant so according to the second rule, it does not need one. Or is this rule about pronounced consonants?

William Randall it is not the Académie française in 1990 but le Conseil supérieur de la langue française (from several French speaking countries)
Learn French with Pascal I guess if you ask someone who speaks bad French his opinion about a dictionary, you will have the same answer:le dictionnaire est une rigolade
Learn French with Pascal oh, okay, sorry, I got them mixed up
Your lessons are very helpful!!! Thank you!
Even for german people it‘s good to understand
Can't be better explanation than this 💯✅
I still cannot understand when I put accent grave
What do you mean by when?
Learn French with Pascal i confuse e é è I cannot understand when someone say a phrase which one should I write
I study French this year and when we do orthographe I can’t understand the teacher when she pronounces the different accents expecially at the letter e , I have seen so many videos but still I don’t know when I should put accent grave or aigu

The French orthography is such a pain. I always quit on French because of it. I think I will end up learning the language with the International Phonetic syetem.
Saad Altuilaai ahah sorry. We made it complicated ...
Why such a pain? I found it normal
Saad Altuilaai you’re just lazy
Lol vous avez essayé tout de même.

Le français continuera de perdre du terrain face à l'anglais si rien n'est fait pour le simplifier.
Et cela me remplit de colère.
S'il n'y a pas de tréma sur le e, on ne prononcerait pas le u avec le mot aigu/aiguë.
Bien dit ! Ce mec se fout de nos gueules.
Thank you for helping me clear the confusion ! Your video is so useful! Merci beaucoup !
Merci Chloé
Learn French with Pascal I didn’t expect you would reply to me! De rien! It’s me who should thank you for helping me keep going on my way to learn French!
So, in french, Normal e = a and e with an accent is e, GENIUS!
ya
Pascal, thank you again. You are a very good teacher.
Merci beacoup

Illogique tout ça
@@leknu146 La prononciation du français n'est pas toujours logique (et on parlera pas de l'anglais ahah)
I can't distinguish between agu and grave on an e.
BarcelonaCobayo1998 for aigu (é) it is similar to the sound ay in 'day' and for grave/circonflexe (è/ê) it is the sound of in in 'bet'
see here how to find out whether it should be é, è, or e www.duolingo.com/comment/24315290
Salut notre Prof le respectueux. je viens de découvrir votre chaîne, vous êtes vraiment genial. chapeau bas Monsieur
A tréma is placed on the e on aiguë because otherwise the u will be silent (u preceded by g or q is silent unless at the end of word).
aiguë = eh-goo [ɛgy]
aigue = ehg [ɛg]
langue = lanhg [lɑ̃g]
languë = lanh-goo [lɑ̃gy]
TheWesternmost we could think so, but since 1990 it is accepted to write is this way aigüe
cedille?

Excellent video!!
