Vendrix No one mentioned Trump and he wasn’t born a Billionaire, if you’re gonna interject yourself into a comment section needlessly at least know what you’re talking about
I LOVE Mark's philosophy on significant stock/equity shares for employees at a young company (or any company ideally). If an employee is paid just a salary or wage, there's very little motivation to help other employees, and sometimes they'll punt a problem over to another division or department to make their own responsibilities less. But when you give them significant equity, they realize doing things that hurt the company overall, will also hurt their own compensation overall in the long run by the company exiting at a lower sale price, or perhaps not exiting at all. Equity is a HUGE motivator for employees of startups. It gives early stage employees risking a lot with a young unstable company, a path to becoming a millionaire quickly that isn't there with a typical salary based job.
It used to be the norm for employees to get stock options... these days it’s usually used (when you are forced to take stocks vs have the option of buying) to pay employees less while saying “well if this company takes off, you’ll have so much money!” They count the stock given to employees as part of their wages (usually) - so basically it’s a huge gamble for employees of a start up (eg you can get paid $50k/year elsewhere Or you can get $40k/year and 100 shares of stock)... if the company goes belly up you’re screwed 🤷🏼♀️ Also companies can dilute stocks after becoming successful
@@karlschreiber-woods6743 that's because there's so many shares out in circulation already. With smaller companies 10 shares out of 5000 shares nets a larger amount than 10 shares out of 250,000
@ojneverdidit22 usually you have executives / directors get a certain amount of stock and everyone else gets a smaller amount. The total number of employee stock is typically between 10 and 30 percent of total shares with startups. If I have 10000 shares I might set aside 2000 for employees and 1000 for managers, directors, and executives. Then I'll offer 10 shares at hire and 10 that vest after 1 - 2 years of employment for an employee, up to the first 100 employees. And then offer maybe an additional 50 for a manager on top of that 20 (with the same split vestment) and maybe an additional 100 or maybe even more for an executive.

10:18 This is actually pretty amazing, might be easy to overlook. It's not common at all for companies to have employee-owned stock, and it's only gotten more rare as time has gone on. It's the ultimate "worker's union", really, and I don't know why so many companies fight against unions while also not simply having' an employee-based stock (at least as preferred stock on a publicly-traded market). It's simply corporate greed that's a race to the bottom...employee-owned companies are stronger companies in the long run. People are far less likely to leave when they know they have a direct stake in a growing, profitable company.
