Episode 386: Use The Elgato Prompter With Any Camera! (Phones, Webcams, GoPros, and More) - Кино
Thanks Tom…great advice and thoughts worthy of my my time…much appreciated!
Very informative and nicely done, Tom. A real "display" of ingenuity.
Thanks for the prompt reply!
Thank you so much!!! I record with my phone and had no idea how to mount it. This is the only video that shows how to set it up!!
Great video. It's nice to see someone go in-depth about using the prompter with phones & other devices, as not everyone will be using a camera to film.
It's pretty darn versatile overall, even if it takes a bit of tinkering to get there.
I love that you randomly use the XL1 in your videos. Such a fun camera to use back in the day!
It's the best!
Great video. Thanks, Tom. I just used mine for the first time about a week ago, and it was really helpful. The app is very limited, though, so I used Teleprompter Pro instead, which is heaps better. Love your constant play on words!
I’m hoping they’ll update the app over time, but even with its limitations it’s not bad for a 1.0. I’ll have to check out Teleprompter Pro though! Thanks for the recommendation 👍
Great video, Tom! Thanks for the information and insight, as always!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This video is excellent, Tom. Thank you for the detailed explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, Tom! It’s still not in my list of things, but I like to keep up to date 😊
I'm the same way- always nice just to know what's happening!
Great stuff! I coulda used this video 2 days earlier! Thankfully I figured it out and glad to see we’re doing it the same way. Thanks for this vid!
Glad you figured it out!
Nice review didn’t knew the product existed thanks 🙏🏾
Thanks for the video. I have the insta360 webcam and will be receiving my Elgato prompter in a few weeks.
This video saved me from selling this prompter! Thanks so much Tom!
Made my own XL version with a 15.6" second-monitor screen, a teleprompter large enough to cover up to 16" screens and some basic and minimal 3D printed items to bring it all together. It's big, bright and beautiful!
Great video. I think I’m sold! Also what lapel setup did you use for this video? I know in the past they haven’t been your favorite. This worked well and sounded great
This was the Sennheiser EW-DP which I absolutely love!
Great video! 🙌
Thank you 🙌
Thanks for making this! Now I can send this video to all of my friends who asked how to set it up for a phone 😅
Haha thanks man! It's a VERY common question. Monitoring the phone is really the trickiest part.
Awesome video Tom thanks for the amazing overview on adaptability ontop of an already amazing review.
Just a few things to note: 1 is that Prompter's DisplayLink USB-C port can actually be used with Android devices specifically since they have support for Displaylink. Apple iOS unfortunately does not have this - but maybe someday those 2 will work together, it's just out of our hands ha. There are 2 potential workarounds for iPhone users though:
a) Prompter's display could be removed if one were inclined - and the Prompter's design has enough flexibility where one could either string together some off the shelf parts or even 3D print parts that can hold a phone in place of the display.
b) The much simpler method I've successfully used is I simply lay my microfiber cloth on Prompter's display and then rest my iPhone on top of that. It's actually kind of nice just being able to rest the phone on there and not have to worry about clamping/unclamping as the force from that adjustment can shift my camera's POV where as placing it (carefully) doesn't have this effect. The downside here is you'd need a fairly level shot so as to not cause any sliding on the phone.
The second thing to note is that if you use a couple of off the shelf parts - namely a 1/4" male to 1/4" male coupler, and a smartphone grip with multiple mounting points, you can mount that grip to where the camera bracket normally screws in - and this provides your phone a way to mount directly to Prompter vertically without being upside down.
This is awesome, thanks for all the insight! Super helpful.
2:34 - if it’s iPhone and Mac, you can wirelessly screen share to your Mac and BOOM your Mac is now a monitor for your camera. If you have an Apple Watch, you can control the normal camera app and see it on the camera control app on your watch. 👍🏻
Omg this is brilliant THANKS!! 🍻
This makes me drool even more for that Prompter thang 🙂!! But, there are priorities like a new stand and some other hardware...
It's really one of the coolest tools I've found in a long time. Maybe not revolutionary for everyone, but definitely a game changer for me.
My MUST have gadget to replace my current prompter - but can't get them anywhere !!
Yeah, the demand seems to be through the roof. But even though the shipping estimates are absurd at the moment, I think it's worth getting on the list. I've had a few friends and viewers end up having their shipped much earlier than originally expected.
Thank you for showing more about how to use a smartphone with this prompter. Another idea of having the screen of your smartphone visible would be to replace the universal shroud with a 3d printed part that has a cutout for the camera bump of a smartphone. Would be cool if Elgato could provide 3d printable files for different iPhone sizes on their prompter page.
Yes! I'm terrible at 3D design, but I have wanted to tinker with making parts for the printer.
I can’t wait for this to come back in stock, I don’t understand why this has been sold out for so long 😢😢
I think they really underestimated the demand for it, but I'd definitely get on the waiting list as soon as you can since it seems like some shipments are going out ahead of schedule.
I'm waiting too! :)
I felt the same way when the first round of reviews. It seems they are respecting the order that orders come in, so it’s better to queue up now. I ordered mine in October and received it just before Christmas.
@@fromdonwithlove oh 100%, but Elgato aren't taking preorders at the moment.
@@tombuck I did get myself on the waiting list. I honestly check on the website on a daily basis just to see if it’s back. lol
Thanks
Thank you for the support!
Hi Tom, just discovered your channel - great stuff! When you're talking about using the iPhone with the Prompter, what is the small external monitor you use when discussing how to see what you're filming? As a solo performer/filmer, I've been trying to figure this out for years. Thanks!
Hi Tom, once again, another great video. Good explanation. What are the chances (in your opinion) of another Elgato Prompter coming out with a larger size Prompter?
I honestly don't know! I think they seriously underestimated the demand for this, so now maybe they would be more interested in looking at other versions?
If you record through apps like OBS, Descript or similar, you can monitor you image in those.
Hey Tom, cheers from France. You have been and you are such a source of inspiration. I love your setup, I love your knowledge, I love your education abilities, I love your humour, or not :-) :-) but honestly mate you are doing an incredible amount of insightful work and I love it. I have built my own WFH space with many of your advices. This is a journey and you know this is always improving how fast it goes. I have fun with those geek techs and it makes my life better to work and to create. Thanks buddy! You are great !
"You gotta figure it out."
Sometimes that part gets overlooked by people 😉
Tom, have told you before and im telling you again. Exactly this is what we need as creators. Also, You made somewhat a software video before, could you update it with for example sites that creates Ai visuals for making for example step by step videos? Or in general, how to use Ai with for example Rodecaster II. Thanks for the good job!
Thanks for the kind words! I haven't really done much exploration with AI visuals myself (other than Photoshop's generative fill), so I don't know that I'd be the best person to speak on it.
It'd be really nice if Elgato had a quick-release option for mounting different devices, but i guess you could always use something like the falcam f22 mounting system for different devices...
So I love following you, and my setup has your gear package all over it - and I would love one of these promoters - but there doesn't even seem to be a roadmap to deliver them. Thoughts or any info on this?
Awesome video! Just a shame we can't really buy it anywhere in the Netherlands currently.
Awesome review, as usual. Can this be used as a secondary computer monitor for zoom calls? I think it would be cool so you could look right at the person (via the camera) instead of above their head.
Yep, it's really just another (small) external display. 👍
Thanks for this! Very helpful. I was just wondering if it could be used with a Sony ZV-E10 camera with the kit lens only (which doesn't have any threads to screw an adapter onto)?
Does the kit lens not have any threads? I had no idea.
If that’s the case, the ZVE10 is plenty light enough ought to to use the platform/shroud combo 👍
I just ordered a 3d printer so I have printing on my mind. Was that GoPro mount 3d printed? Awesome video!
Hooray for 3D printing! The GoPro mount is just one I found on Amazon. I like the solid metal ones vs. the plastic standard ones. But there are so many options when it comes to printing stuff for cameras (and drones)!
This prompter looks great. But I'm afraid it would not work with 13 mm Viltrox. Are there prompters for that wide angle lenses?
Hi Tom, what tripod head and stand is being used in the video? I’m
Looking to use a similar setup but looking at the best stand for my gear and prompter
could you please provide the link to the phone mount you used?
Can you use an iPhone 15 filming with the wide angle lens?
How did you get your Lavalier Mic to sound so good
This is the Sennheiser EW-DP with the Omni 100 mic and it just naturally sounds pretty dang good. I added a little bit of compression and a high pass filter in editing, but that's it. I really love this setup.
Dude you are too clever with all the puns. I see comedy gold in your future.
I appreciate that! I would love it if my mind were a goldmine 😁
Tom, my MBP uses only USB-C since it's the M1Pro. 1st, does this work with my Cal digit USB hub, and 2nd, if I use the prompter in the field and I must bring my Laptop...can you recommend a USB-C to USB-C cord that will work with it?
Love the videos but when will it be back in stock?
I’m not connected with Elgato and I have no idea. But I would just get on the waitlist as soon as possible- it seems like a lot of orders end up shipping out early.
I can't wait for a time when I can actually buy one. 😢
It'll be worth the wait!
What if you are using your Mac book pro camera teaching live -do I just put it behind the Mac book?
Tom. I loved the video and I'm really close to buying one, BUT one thing scares me.. My laptop which I use only has one USB connection, literally just one.. I use a USB hub--which I plug in both my Rodecaster Pro and Sony A5100 camera into, then into the computer.. FWIW, I've had zero RCP or Camera issues plugging into a hub and then my laptop.. Am I going to have a problem if I can't put my prompter directly into my laptop USB slot? Literally, me buying the prompter is pending based on this answer.. Thanks!
To be honest I’m not 100% sure but I think it depends on the hub. Some hubs are better at distributing power than others (if your hub requires its own power supply there’s a good chance it’ll work). It might be worth asking Elgato’s support team for a definitive answer though. 🤞
I want to use my canon rf 16mm f2.8 lens but there are no adapters. I’m using an r50 which is dropped so looks great. Very frustrating as I’d like to hang prompter.
does it reflect off glasses?
I would have to get used to them tho, A script right in front of the camera!
I could have one, or would I use my laptop as a teleprompter? (That would be a really big teleprompter! 😅)
There's definitely a learning curve with prompters, but it's not too difficult to overcome.
Tom do you know of a high speed USB-C to USB-C cable for this prompter?
Yes! I just bought these last week and they've worked well so far: geni.us/jAd1nHQ
Basically I think any 20gbps or higher cable should get the job done.
@@tombuck Thanks Tom!
Can the iPhone be in a vertical position?
Did you not find the Insta Link green light distracting while using the teleprompter; I wish you could turn it off!
It's not a problem to be, but I totally understand that it could be distracting. I think a bit of electrical tape could probably cover it up if needed.
@@tombuck thanks for the reply! That's exactly what I'm doing now, had some weird reactions on the gimbal but it could also be due to temperature. Still an incredible camera :)
Did the Insta360 Link not have issues with its Status LEDs on the bottom reflecting off the see-through mirror ??
It can be visible depending on how bright the promoter’s display is set, but it doesn’t cause any issues.
@@tombuck Thank you for clearing that up, I will take it into account for my purchase decision
Do you think the Prompter would work with the Obsbot Tail Air?
I’my should as long as the camera isn’t moving (which might defeat its purpose).
The Prompter will be on my doormat tomorrow
Think most people will be able to get it very soon now.
Woo! Hope you enjoy it!
DJI pocket 3?
I was about to buy this prompter but when I realised i could not have my phones feed directly on the prompter screen I backed off from it. I need a portable solution that I can shoot with my phone and not depend on a computer and power source AND see what my phone sees.
Might be a silly question, but if I'm using a phone to the prompter - how do I actually get text to display? Do I need to connect the prompter to a laptop or something.
Yes, this prompter only works with a computer.
Does the Elgato Prompter can be used with the DJI Osmo Pocket 3? Anyone who has tried?
I usa the logitech C922 webcam what will be the best way to use this with Prompter
You can mount it the same way I used the Link webcam in this video (with the shroud backplate).
Thanks@@tombuck
Is it possible to use this with DJI Pocket 3?
In theory yes, but I don't have the Pocket 3 myself so I can't say for sure. I see no reason why it wouldn't work with the shroud backplate though.
Yes, they probably did not realize what a game changer they created, the Prompter is. To quote an old saying, best thing since sliced bread.
Does anyone know if you can use it with a DJI Pocket 3, possibly with a ball mount?
As long as the gimbal isn't moving and you use the shroud, it should be fine. As for ball mount, it depends on how heavy duty it is. Ideally, a pan/tilt head is best.
@@tombuck Thank you for the reply! My main concern was with the hight of the Pocket 3. Anyhow, I realized I might be able to just print an adapter that enables a lower position of the mount...
When is the Elgato Prompter coming back in stock?
It seems like it still isn't in stock (end of May 2024)
It goes in and out of stock pretty regularly, but wait times overall seem to be much less now.
@@tombuck Thank you for the answer. Any idea if the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 will fit fine with the Elgato Prompter?
Too bad we can't get one. I tried to order one after your initial video. And looks like they are still not available. I guess they should thank you for increasing demand. But they are going to look bad if they can't produce them.
Prompters have generally been such a pain for so long that I think they severely underestimated the demand for a decent, simple one. I have no idea how their system works, but it seems like they're working through the first batch of orders before opening it up for more.
What about the Elgato Facecam?? NOT the Facecam pro! Do I need the shroud??
I don't think so, but I'm not 100% sure.
Its great Teleprompter, Its just not cool that I have to take my computer with me everywhere I want to use it. Maybe a second version with portability in mind.
I think options like the Parrot prompter are the "on the go" designs, while this one is specifically for small home studio and office setups.
@@tombuck I completely agree. Great review as always! 👏 Thanks mate
Can it be used with a Macbook Pro?
Yes.
How about using a camcorder?
I tried to buy it but in Germany no one can deliver it.
Good video but unfortunately this is out of stock and may not be back for a long time. A great video would be alternatives to this product.
stop, you already sold me they just need to get them back in stock
Get on the list now! Don't wait for them to be available.
The promoter is maybe ok but the software sucks. You cannot download scripts in docx. You cannot edit it even lithgly like underline text . This is very needed . Everyone that uses promoters knows that
How about some more budget-friendly teleprompters? The Elgato is almost $300 and with the materials used, it probably cost them about $8.
Most prompters with built in displays start at around $1200-$1500 and either don't come with software or have absolutely awful software, so the Elgato IS actually the budget option.
Except you literally cannot even get one of back order for months. So anybody who needs a teleprompter has to go with something else unless they want to wait six months to use it. 😠
I have no idea how Elgato's system works, but I've seen lots of companies (including them) put really far off shipping dates for in-demand products just to set the expectation. Then they often end up shipping sooner.
Mine was supposed to deliver in January and it showed up in October. I know a few other people whose February/March orders showed up last month, so that's a good sign. I'd recommend getting on the list as soon as they open it up again and hopefully it won't be a 6 month wait.
They just released a new wave today. Ordered mine right away. Will arrive in Feb apparently. Looking forward to it, to be fair!
@@shaeccspeare Thank you so much for that reply! I signed up for notifications from ElGato and haven't seen a thing. Upon seeing this comment, I went straight to their website and there it is ready to order (backorder really) instead of out of stock.
@@sandgaijin no problem. I totally understand people’s the frustration around it. Was so surprised when I got the email as what you described usually happens to me (no email so I miss the notification). Glad it helped!!
