It’s separate entities that organise anual traditional games VS annual keretapi sarong celebration/campaign. Perhaps you experienced joint ventures event between those entities in previous Malaysia Day celebration.

The festival pemainan Malaysia is organized every year but there are no specific date.... Last year they collaborate with the keretapi sarung event...
It seems this year they collaborate with Pasar Saloma event....

Or Maybe it's because this year Malaysia Day coincide with Maulidur Rasul (the Prophet Muhammad's Birthday)so they plan to do it later this year

Your friend still here? If he is, bring him to Kampung Baru to experience and see locals Malay hangout and eat. You can walk to Kampung Baru from KLCC through the beautiful Saloma Bridge. Recommend visit during evening and don't forget to bring umbrella ☔🌧
