I don't think Evan was that toxic, because he mentioned that he absolutely hates shouting at people and being mad. But it's true that they both brought out the worst in each other, the relationship was pretty toxic.
To be frank, a person can loath doing those things, but still do them. They can be even very violent. There are people with lack of control, when they go into rage and after they are "done", they hate themselves for doing it. But still will do the same thing the next time...because they have a switch that gets turned in their brain when they get really mad and then they don't feel empathy at that moment...so they can really hurt somebody. It takes a lot of time and effort to get control of such behavior and be able to remind yourself to feel empathy, when going into rage and stop yourself before doing damage. I speak from experience. But of course I don't say he does those things. I just say, that just because he said he hates doing such things...it doesn't mean that he doesn't do them. It can even be the exact reason why he hates doing such things, because he does them too much & he feels guilty. In the end...nobody knows what he did or what Emma did.
