- DANA GIOIA is the former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as an internationally acclaimed and award-winning poet. Gioia has published four full-length collections of poetry, as well as eight chapbooks. His poetry collection, Interrogations at Noon, won the 2002 American Book Award. An influential critic as well, Gioia's 1991 volume Can Poetry Matter?, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle award, is credited with helping to revive the role of poetry in American public culture. His new book of poetry, Pity the Beautiful, was published in 2012. He lives in Sonoma County.

My favorite poet and a very wise man
As a native Californian--although I don't live there anymore--I found this talk on "A Sense of Place" particularly interesting. Even though my family background is exclusively Northern European, I took so many Mediterranean and Indigenous American names for granted--without the slightest thought about what their meanings might be!

@@christopherberroa9084 Yes, Americans tend to only refernce themselves. They aren't taught very much about the rest of the world in school sadly. For example, he pronounced Brisbane wrong. As an Australian it made me cringe a little... It's pronounced 'Bris-bin' not 'Bris-bane'.

This guy has always been the paradigm of the worst sort of corporate-academic-connected-poetic hack. No, we don't know your great painter friend "Jack", whose "art" was in your office in "Washington" when you were head of the "NEA", as his work is about as "artistic" as your poetry. All those "awards" from his friends (to whom he was then giving "awards"), and not an original poetic thought in his life.
How so?
One scare quote after another is painful to read.
