Pero it gives you soul, it gives you identity, it gives you pride of the place.
I remember Escolta very well
I am 79 years old now and I use to shop at Escolta when I was in university
I miss Escolta very much
Those were the days
Feels like you knows a lot po. At that age so much wisdom and knowledge we can obtain. Kayo po cguro ung taong masarap kausap about sa past. Hoping to know you po.

My grandfather was the theater manager of the Capitol Theater in the 50's. I remember seeing a photo of him and the actor Charlton Heston during the Ben-Hur Manila premiere. I remember when we shopped at Berg's for summer shorts. I remember seeing Star Wars at the Lyric Theater in the 70's. Going to mass at Sta. Cruz Church, eating at Panciteria Moderna and boarding the Love Bus at Escolta to go back to Makati. Thanks GMA for bringing me back to Escolta.

i got an idea. the photos and story you just mentioned could probably help out in the building’s restoration - if there is an organization or agency tasked in restoring it...

Ito ang dapat maging pananaw ng mga kabataan ngayon Hindi ang protesta na ang Agenda ay maging Communist ang Pilipinas at ito ay dulot ng mapagkunwaring Pilipino hangar daw ay kaunlaran, iyan pala kaunlaran nila mga Elite o mga Oligarch na itinuturing ngayon ng mga critics (peaceful civilized people whose aim is to open the populace to what is happening). But this those protestor are destructor or destabilizer funded by Communist supporter disguised as Pilipino para sa kaunlaran. Pero hindi Kurdish mangulo recruited by Couangco and Aquino as revealed by former CPP/NPA, bumubuo ng pangalan Co-Man-Der- DANTE, (Diokno, Aquino, N?, Tanada, E?)
It’s just amazing no? Brings you back in time. Just like you live there. I love the smell of old structures and museums too.
I-Witness of GMA 7 is 1 of the most Documentary in the Philippines Ever..... Ms.Kara David, Ms. Sandra Aguinaldo, Mr.Jay Taruk, Mr. Howie Severino & Mr. Atom Aurollio thank you for every week of the documentary all over the world.
I worked at BOTICA BOIE in Escolta during the late fifties thru early sixties as s working student. During those times, Escolta was just like Rodeo Drive of Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, California. Anything bought in Escolta was associated with CLASS. Prominent stores along Escolta were BERG'S DEPARTMENT STORE, LA ESTRELLA DEL NORTE, REBULLIDA, SYVEL'S. VELAYO'S (Jewellers), HEACOCK'S, and many more. I still remember SAMANILLO BUILDING, REGINA BUILDING, AND ROMAN SANTOS BUILDING. The beauty of the place slowly faded over the period of time, maybe due to government neglect, until it turned into almost slum and hopeless area. Recently, I heard over the news that this place is being revived under the New City of Manila Administration. I am 82 years old now getting closer to the Departure Area. I hope this place that I loved returns to its glory within the latter part of my lifetime.
I would like to visit the present Escolta, this the place I used to to be my short cut going to Quiapo from my Pldt ofis at Intramuros.
This is were I do my window shopping at Bergs dept.,Syvels etc...( i really forgot thier names)
This is really a high end shopping area.
Thank you GMA for featuring a docu of Escolta
Perfect time to watch perfect documentaries. 8.24.2020
Ang problema sa atin kasi walang sense of heritage! Di marunong magpahalaga s kasaysayan. Masyado na kinda in ang sistema a ng pilipinas sa modernization. It's not a bad thing tho, Pero Sana pahalagahan din ang kasaysayan diba? Kasi our heritage speaks a billion words and a million stories. Salamat sa documentary natu. 👍🏼
JILDA, AM PROUD OF YOUR THINKING MIND. THANKS
Nahh not really.
It's not about heritage at all cuz our heritage goes far beyond buildings like these but no one really cares cuz those buildings represent the what ones was the epitome of the Philippines. If you really want to cry about true heritage go to the provinces where those people actually faught to keep them like the rice terraces etc. Not buildings that has only been around 100 yrs.
@@nico77212 Naglecture ka nga, sablay naman. Only been around 100 years? Our heritage goes beyond buildings?
The two ladies coming out of the store in their kimona at saya remind me of my great grandmother's step sister. She would dress like that on big grand occasions, Sunday church, shopping or even heading to Manila from the province. She was referred to as Donya Josefa. She dressed like this until the early 1980's before she suffered a stroke and passed away a few years later. She was a young toddler when Rizal was imprisoned and later on shot in Luneta. It was from her that I heard stories about peace time and the Japanese war.
My great great grandmother from Cuenca had the same name as Donya Josefa, her full name is Josefa Lopez Lunar.
Interesting to know that they used the Spanish title of respect for ladies, "Donya" inMexican Spanish "Doña".
The Escolta Block every November is an amazing idea to revive this beautiful part of Manila. Millennials pls continue to appreciate, love, support efforts to bring Old Manila into the present up to the future. Mabuhay!
Please continue to work towards the preservation of old buildings in Escolta especially the Art Deco architecture.
At wala pa tokhang hehe
It's all about perception depending in the eyes (and the state of mind) of the beholder. Mabuhay ka.

I used to work in the conservation of heritage buildings in Singapore (Stamford House, Capitol Building and Capitol Theatre) and I must say that their government is strictly implementing the balance between heritage conservation and urban renewal. Of course these buildings are obviously structurally unsound but there are a lot of ways to retrofit them without sacrificing its external facade. Just hoping that the local governments will factor-in the historical value of these buildings more than anything else as these serve as testament of how colorful Manila was.
Very nostalgic how I wished I had lived in that era where every thing in Manila is beautiful
Elizabeth Gojeng Bautista yeah, i think manila was once a upon a time like the now singapore where everything is new, beautiful, clean and updated...
What hasn't changed are the dirty and smelly esteros. They were as filthy then back in the 1970's.
Indeed it was beautiful back then part of my childhood was in Escolta. My dad was a man she store manager. Back then everything was handmade no readymade exists. My best memories of Escolta the good food.
Amazing episode! I like the guy from NCCA saying..."heritage gives you soul!"

MORE HISTORICAL DOCUMENTARIES TO COME PO, GODBLESS!!!!!🇵🇭
I grew up in sta.cruz and we used to do window shopping in Escolta. During early 60s nandyan na yung mga sikat na department stores like Berg and Syvels
IM BEING ENTHUSIAST ABOUT THE SPANISH ERA OF THE PHILIPPINES. THANK YOU FOR THIS
Thank you for this very nice feature! Kudos GMA! I myself is was mesmerize by the beauty of Escolta and its rich history. Hope that Big Time Developers of the country will do a major facelift and merge classical and modern restoration of the historical site! The City Of Manila should value this! Escolta mirrors our rich culture and way of living as Filipinos! Go for the restoration of all neoclassical and art deco architectual structure in Escolta!😊
We made a thesis paper about Escolta Street Manila so proud😍🙌🏻

I am 59 this year and lucky to say that I was able to enjoy the old Manila in the 60s and early 70s when the go-to was Escolta and Avenida Rizal. Thanks to the good leadership of Yorme, Manila is beginning to be alive again. Sayang kasi that a historical city like Manila would sink into oblivion. Capital city pa naman.
Thanks Sandra for bringing us back to the past. I hope with the leadership of Mayor Isko in conjunction with Manila Tourism we will be able to preserve our heritage.🙏

This episode is so refreshing & very informative as always. I-Witness is my favorite documentary show besides Tom Arullo (pogi kse si Tom eh hahaha). Thanks for this documentary. I am not familiar with Escolta pero I will visit this place pag uwi ko next year.
I want to see a jazz bar in Escolta. I hope somebody will think of putting up a bar like that. It's a perfect place to be the center of art and jazz music in the Philippines or filipino music for that matter. Patuloy na Buhayin ang Escolta!
It also looks like the place where classical music would be played.
Fascinating images of the old and contemporary Escolta, but one thing is missing from the documentary is the voice of the local government. We should raise the question to the Manila municipality government on what they are currently doing to preserve the historical beauty of Escolta and what support they are giving to the dying businesses. It's not just the local people that can make Escolta thriving, like what the journalist suggested, but also the government's aid and local funding.
Kakaiba yung feeling. Sarap balik balikan at mag photos.
Wala talagang makakatalo sa gma i love history kudos to i witnes gma network😍😘😘😘

Dahan Dahan na ang Pagbangon muli ang Pinaka Magandang Lungsod sa Asya. The Queen City of the Pacific..
@FrostBug may plan siya to give incentives to who can revive escolta buildings and establish their businesses there.
what's the update na po ba sa initiative ni mayor isko?
Actually Ang ganda tlga NG escolta napabayaan Lang . Parang NASA London ung style..
I have memories when I was young my mother worked at PNB escolta so sad is now demolished. The shops are awesome not sure if the old SM and the man who sells puppies in the corner are still there. Thanks GMA I make sure I'll visit that shop that sells vintage items when I go back to the Phil. Also great mural artwork painted at the wall of shattered bldgs.
Too bad weren't able to maintain the cleanliness of the Calle Escolt. This could be a major tourist attraction both local and international.
Eff Cee Escolta is like one of those places where you get a powerful unusual nostalgic attachment to it.
Why cleanliness only? Does the architecture of the buildings not matter? We need to make Escolta clean and European again. But of course that's impossible because nobody wants that?

Its History for us Pilipinos!! Thanks for featuring ESCOLTA!!you thrive!!
I worked previously on that area, and the regret i have until now that i did not explore that area. For me, at least, despite the loss of everything magical within Old Manila, there is still that heritage and pride you cannot deny. Places that define the real Philippines.

Oh Boy! Severe Nostalgia is biting at me.
My first real job after college is with R.Coyuito Securities, member of Manila Stock Ex. Everytine the company made good transactions, they treated all of ghe employees & we had good times at eat all you can places along Ongpin, Lardizabal etc . And oh the Savory Chicken at the foot of Jones Bridge!
Then I worked at Republic Bank, moved to Security Bank. Our department was moved to the head office in Makati, I was sad to leave Escolta, but I am lucky I had nice memories of the whole section in Manila that reminds you of how rich and beautiful those architectural gems the country has (had?)
My husband & I have the luck to visit Southern Spain multiple times (when we still were working) and I am to this day amazed that Malaga, Marbella, Estepona, and lots of places along Costa del Sol resemble what we had along these places in Manila. I am particularly sad that they removed (destroyed ) the water fountain at Plaza Goiti
I hope the government through NHA will continue their advocacy of preserving our heritage buildings and houses. This is one that defines our identity as Filipinos and that we Filipinos should take pride of.
It's a very nice docu Ms. Sandra! Great job
Would love to visit that place...seems so nostaligic. Thanks for sharing.
