I love this series Tomo! My father would play Steely Dan in the car when I was a kid and I sat in the back seat soaking up those harmonies and progressions. What a great education that was for me. The title song "Gaucho" is probably one of my favorite Dan tunes. The progression and changes are mystifying to me. So beautifully complicated yet somehow simple enough to sing along with. True genius.
I always like your videos and instruction. But what impresses me the most is that you take time to read and reply to every comment. Very impressive and greatly appreciated. Thank you. 😊
So happy to hear that. Thank you so much! Yes. I really enjoy reading everyone's comment. I can't comment when I don't understand it. I really appreciate everyone! I enjoy reading DMs on Instagram too. You're very welcome!
Truly instructional to watch you do the work of figuring out - and explaining - these arrangements as you go. As always, your humor, good nature, expertise and encouragement are an inspiration, Tomo. *** Oh … and Steely Dan is one of my ALL TIME FAVE artists, so this was a special treat.***. Thanks again!
I grew up with Steely Dan being played on the turntable often. I was really drawn to this music more so than anything else that got regular play. I'm assuming it was because it was a bit more complex and gave my ears and brain something to decipher and play with. Don't get me wrong... I was a mad dancer to Elton John's Rocket Man! I loved Jackson Brown, Billy Joel, Hendrix, and of course The Beatles!! But it was Aja that I maintained an emotional connection with decades later.
I love your tone on this one! I have a vintage DynaComp and it is my favorite pedal. I also use a MXR Custom Comp. Yup 2 compressors on my board. DynaComp for country and the Custom Comp for tone like what you have on this video. Compression works nicely with Strat "quak". Keeley makes a great compressor too. I will also run an optical compressor on vocals and mix down.
¡DANG! See this is in rotation in my car - - So now I know I will be visualizing it while I'm driving. it's nice to know that I have a grasp of the chords and even the reasoning on how to make extensions, BUT seeing them linked together like in the 16-18 minute mark here gives me confidence that I can start to make a chart of this.
What a fun session! Thank you so much. I've been learning a lot from trying to play along with Steely Dan songs lately - would you be willing to do a "Let's Listen" video with another Steely Dan song? "Babylon Sisters" (first song from same album) is a great one, lots of very nice piano chord transitions that I'm hoping to figure out and use on guitar, similar like you mentioned here
Tomo thanks so much for taking the time to share one of Dan's greatest songs with all of us. I think there's one or two different rhythm triads or chords that extend above the twelve fret? Maybe I'm wrong, I guess that's not really that important because the main body of guitar was what you were explaining to us all. My whole presumption of there music has always been for us just to listen to and appreciate, all of there songs and music will stand the test of time and live forever in our hearts for us to enjoy and to learn from. Thanks again for sharing.
You're very welcome! This is just like one of my Skype lessons! I just answer & explain things after listening. Making thumbnail photo is much more difficult than making this video! All good! Each person finds something unique and cool! I picked basic chords. This is not meant "Note for note" More "Just ideas"
Another great analysis. Greetings. From Ireland Thanks Tomo. From one Tommy to another id love to see you breakdown the intersting chords on "one day" by Gary Moore.
The UA Max is ungodly complicated. Using the DYNA (Dyna Comp) setting, the three lower knobs (Attack, Ratio, and Release) have no effect. What does what is not easy to master, especially since switching on different compressors means the knob settings are often unrelated to the sound you're hearing. Great video. Thanks. Last night I decided to look at a screen shot of your handwritten paper on R 3 7 chords. 7th, maj 7th, and minor 7th with Roots on the 6th or 5th strings with the 3 and 7 on the 4th or 3rd strings. The image wasn't great, but figuring it out - homework - added knowledge to my playing. Highly recommended video, which I've lost track of.
@@TomoFujitaMusic Definitely looking forward to your video on the Max, Tomo. If you think it's simple after making the video, I'll decide it's me. I hesitated to comment, because I thought I might be confused. But I spent a couple hours making my own set of notes from their website, which I double checked. I'm a former software developer who worked in an electrical engineering department doing AI research. I've learned maybe 10 programming languages in multiple operating systems, so I know how to read manuals. That said, I might still be wrong.
@@mikem668 This unit is very simple as other UAFX pedals. Basically 3 choices of each toggle switch. So if you each one then you can tell which tone you like ( it will take some time checking..) If you think it's confusing then go "single pedal" That's fun too, I just love the quality and flexibility of this video a lot. Thank you so much for sharing! It's not so much "Right or wrong" You like it or not? No reason needed!
LOL! The best times are when I accidentally find myself playing some other song after wandering of the one I was intending to work on. Rabbit hole excursions are a lot of fun.
Hi Tomo! Check out the band called “Goose” for your next video. They are a great improvisation band and their song “Arcadia” would be perfect for a lesson like this! I think you would really like them!
Can never get enough of Steely Dan. Such intricate music for their time! Cheers
So awesome! Thank you for sharing!
For their time? Redundant statement, they are intricate for any time.
Ahh ..The Hugh McCracken Intro & Track * Great Studio Guitarist 🎸 Good Stuff Tomo 🙏
What a tasty player! Thank you!
@@TomoFujitaMusic Oh Yeah .. Hughie Also Does Those Classic Fill’s On “Uncle Albert” (McCartney: RAM Album) 🙏

Love your videos so much they inspire me to learn and get better at guitar and not worry about messing up and just having fun every day while playing
Thank you so much! Don't worry! We are supposed to make mistakes so we learn something from it. Please enjoy!
So awesome! The Steely Dan catalog is a guitar masterclass ... great choice. Thank you Tomo! ✌

Glad you enjoyed it! You're very welcome! Thank you!
I have listened to Gaucho at least 50 times the past 2 months so this is awesome 🔥🔥🔥
Good job! That's so great!
@@TomoFujitaMusic with an album like that, it is seriously no work 😄
Reelin' In the Years. 1972. One of the best of the best. I was in my junior year in college when it came out. Cheers, Tomosan! :)
they really made that guitar tone of "plugged into a broken solid state radio with a broken speaker" sing.
Thank you for sharing! Awesome!
I can’t believe I missed this video until now. Very good thank you!

Thank you, Tomo, this song makes me happy! B.t.w. The 19s of 1981 are going to be retired very soon ;-)
So happy to hear that! So awesome! Wow! Hard work! Congratulations!
Yess !! The great Dan 😎 You should do more videos about them, they have some amazing guitar lines.
I would love too! Good ear training for surprise chords! Yes!
this always sounds like it's floating away from the tonic. it really evokes a great free floating feeling

Thank you Mr.Fujita.
Steely Dan sounds.

Very very helpful, thank you! I've never even attempted to learn this until now ;)

Great playing✨
The intro of this song reminds me of Mark Knopfler🎸
He actually played on Time Out Of Mind in the same Album😊
Thank you! Some minor pentatonic phrase over fun chords (minor) Thank you for sharing!
Maybe the direction was like " Hey, can you play like Marl Knopfler?
