small point, but i found the different colored pictures of dandelions to be fascinating. the idea that bees see a huge target saying "pollenate here" -- nature is SO COOL.
I've got a coworker who is a beekeeper. She brought in fresh young honey this morning! Between that and these videos, I'm really becoming fascinated with bees. Thanks for piquing my interest!
I saw the bee at the end drinking a lot, and then after a short pause having another snack; Is that for putting a bit into that other stomach for itself?
it does take allot of time to get it done and perfected(I guess it would take upto a month to get it right and working.) but the hardware is relatively cheap these days and easy to program. If your interested search google for the makers movement and arduino + RFID sensor. After getting it running though you can sit back and let the sensors do there work. :)
We do know what wavelengths the bees can see and we can measure the wavelenghts given of by flowers. Of course we can't know how they perceive these colors, but given that almost everyone agrees on what wavelength is perceived as what color, we can claim that they would see this-and-this wavelength as such-and-such color.
a bit off topic: I think you can develop an allergy to bee venom, I used to be stung almost every year during hikes without any real issue beside pain, but last time my knee (the site of the sting) literally seized, I had to wait an hour to be able to walk again, I wonder if I should carry an injector?
You are actually kind of right. We cannot see UV light, so we do not have a color concept for it. However we can detect the UV radiation with a sensor and then shift the light spectrum, so that the radiation is in our visible part of the spectrum. If you then measure the spectrum bees can detect (which you can do via testing when they fly - see red light in the last videos), you can combine the data and visualize a flower as seen by bees. I am not an expert but I think this is probably correct.
Or it is completely arbitrary and doesn't really matter and is just the system they chose. The time recorded is not dependent on how fast they can push the buttons, they are just indicators of what happened in what time frames.
These vidoes are tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo short, unlike my "too"!! I need to know more!! science is my drug!
That seems like a reachable goal for a microryza project. The main problem with getting funding through something like microryza is explaining to us layman what you're going to do with the money, but you can just link to this video and say: "You see what I'm doing here. That's boring, and I could spend my time a lot more productively be automating it."
Whenever DNA replication in eurkaryotes is discussed in general ("normal") biology, DNA pol III is catalyzing the cleavage of dNTP''s, which involves an SN2 attack. Whenever metabolism is discussed, such as the Kreb's cycle, it's all just elementary reaction steps in a mechanism. They're all derived from biology, which is based on chemistry. The point is, biology is definitely a science. Even evolutionary biology has it's origin in chemistry of DNA or RNA, etc mutations.
Why not tag with RFID's? and place sensors at the entrance and the individual flowers, You might even put a small weight sensor on the wooden piece to measure if he landed there.
Would it not make more sense to label the artificial flowers with numbers rather than letters? From a mere ease of use point of view the letters A,B,C and D are spaced oddly around the keyboard and are hard to use whilst not looking at the keyboard. For her results to be marginally more accurate 1,2,3 and 4 would have made more sense. Just a thought and a possible help.
There are a few typos in the description. It says "he research", not "the research" and I don't quite get what "who bumblebees" means. Possibly "the bumblebees"?
The bee hives are labelled by number (to avoid saying 'the B bees' haha. This is why the flowers are labelled A B C D. Luckily I am using a new programme which just requires clicking my mouse so there is no need for typing!
The argument goes that it's a study, not a science, but it's mainly just banter between physical scientists (chemists, physicists) and biologists (I'm soon to be a physicist :) )
because telling someone how brilliant they are because they can put a number on a bee is really what they want to hear the research they are doing is good however it isnt perse revolutionary she isnt making miracles happen yeah shes probably doing a good job but thats about as far as it can go her looks thats easy to compliment on you see her she wont look to much diffirent when you meet her i wager the type of compliment doesnt matter aslong as its a geniune compliment
If you think about it, biology is a type of chemistry, and specifically one of the HARDEST types of chemistry. It's so hard due to how complex the molecules in life are relative to just "simple" organic chemistry. Ask a chemist to explain how a ethane nitrile can be hydrolyzed to a carboxylic acid and then ask a chemist to explain to you how a virus works.
Excellent video, fascinating incited into real research. I hate to be 'that guy' but in the description Brady, you've written 'as we go deeper into he research.' instead of her research. Sorry :/
well yes, there is no "real" color, because animals perceive it differently. even for humans there are people who see red differently (even though it's the same object). I think the picture shows which parts of the plant radiate light in the UV spectrum (the red parts), not the actual color for the bees, because well, we can never picture anything that's uv correctly because we cannot see it, and we can never picture exactly how the radiation looks in someone's mind.
How can you not be interested in the engineers of society? Without them we'd have no plants to eat, or to feed animals which we also eat. Their survival ∝ our survival.
you didn't get his point. If you look at pink, for example, you're looking at white light minus green. Now, let's assume a certain animal can't perceive green. Therefore, what seems white to us would look pink to him. If his green is the same as my green, and if my green is the same as yours if not important in this case.
How about people ignore her looks altogether and instead praise her on her intelligence and scientific knowledge?. Now that would be a novel idea now wouldn't it? Praising someone's scientific research video for its scientific merit. But no instead we will go down your route and ignore her hard work and research and instead just post inane, tedious and moronic comments about her looks because that is obviously the only thing in this video wroth commenting on right? "eye roll".
That's what "get a woman" means. It's not about learning to have a mature relationship, it's about having sex to become a 'man' and to stop being a 'boy' who's so "desperate" for sex, he's behaving undesirably. The woman never actually enters into it, just her implied anatomy; she's at best the provider of a service to be contracted out.
You have a lot more vested interest than you think Casey. If Bees were to suddenly die off ~ all human life would die off in about 5 years. Where do you think you get your food from? No pollinators no you.
People can dream. It is the unfortunate effects of hollowood-ization that has infected a good number of folk. We're constantly bombarded with sex and so it is no wonder why a number of people act this way.
I can't stop laughing... woodenhead2050's comment a little ways down there, obviously this is a beautiful lady in this video and for people to not remark would be an insult, I also recommend doing a little research into repressed sexual tension, I think it would prove very beneficial and maybe you could find a therapist that could help.
I didn't commodify women I merely stated that instead of lusting after people they are never going to meet. To instead spend their time more productively finding a real woman in the real world . Instead of sitting inside all day posting comments on every video that has a woman in.
Do you honestly think that that woman sits there reading the comments hoping someone will compliment her on her looks? Chances are she doesn't give a rats ass what some random youtube mong thinks of her good or otherwise. Yeah she isn't ugly so what? She is posting a video on her own scientific study she isn't posing as a scientist to look sexy and impress some nobody lol.
Yeah, it is. You should research more, you would be a lousy scientist. There are five branches of natural science: astronomy, biology, chemistry, the Earth sciences and physics. Also human sciences such as anthropology, sociology and linguistics, and formal sciences such as mathematics and logic. Bazinga.
small point, but i found the different colored pictures of dandelions to be fascinating. the idea that bees see a huge target saying "pollenate here" -- nature is SO COOL.
Didn't know about the two stomachs with different purposes, really cool!
I've got a coworker who is a beekeeper. She brought in fresh young honey this morning! Between that and these videos, I'm really becoming fascinated with bees. Thanks for piquing my interest!
I'm here for the bees. Nuff said.
Even though this is about bees, and I have no vested interest in them, there's just something satisfying about hearing her talk about them.
Could you make a video on Haplodiploidism and the unique kin selection in hymenoptera bees?
I saw the bee at the end drinking a lot, and then after a short pause having another snack; Is that for putting a bit into that other stomach for itself?
thanks for your comment, yeah I had a hunch one could develop an allergy later in life, I'll look into it
or you know it would make them but a smile on their face because everyone loves getting compliment so more compliments is not a bad thing?
Yes. Definitely. Not the only one, but undoubtedly an issue. Look up any papers written by David Goulson or James Cresswell on the subject.
it does take allot of time to get it done and perfected(I guess it would take upto a month to get it right and working.) but the hardware is relatively cheap these days and easy to program. If your interested search google for the makers movement and arduino + RFID sensor. After getting it running though you can sit back and let the sensors do there work. :)
It's easier to notice a typo with A, B, C and D since they are further apart.
Thumbs down, why for?
I'm never gonna understand.
There's an actual tool called a bee grabber. Amazing.
Isn't it the best assumption with convenience in mind? Like how we might say "he's on his way" when we don't actually know, but we assume.
Or [a/s] [w/e] [r/t] [g/h] [spacebar] for the relaxed left hand placement.
Now I want to become a bumblebee researcher
No vested interest in them? But bees are just fascinating!
who was the poor guy who had to tag all those bees?? xD
We do know what wavelengths the bees can see and we can measure the wavelenghts given of by flowers. Of course we can't know how they perceive these colors, but given that almost everyone agrees on what wavelength is perceived as what color, we can claim that they would see this-and-this wavelength as such-and-such color.
"Hey baby. Want to come back to my place and practice trophallaxis?"
a bit off topic: I think you can develop an allergy to bee venom, I used to be stung almost every year during hikes without any real issue beside pain, but last time my knee (the site of the sting) literally seized, I had to wait an hour to be able to walk again, I wonder if I should carry an injector?
IMO, if the keys are next to each other there is more chance of the wrong key being pressed
very cool. amazing that we don't see the same things...
You are actually kind of right. We cannot see UV light, so we do not have a color concept for it. However we can detect the UV radiation with a sensor and then shift the light spectrum, so that the radiation is in our visible part of the spectrum. I am not an expert but I think this is probably correct.
At least we have each other.
very cool experiment shes been doing. more of these REAL WORLD science experiments
Or it is completely arbitrary and doesn't really matter and is just the system they chose. The time recorded is not dependent on how fast they can push the buttons, they are just indicators of what happened in what time frames.
Yay, Part 3!
Well, the bees are tagged with numbers. Maybe it's simpler to not overlap bee labels and flower labels.
My dad once got mad at me for stepping on a bumblebee. Some people just REALLY like those insects I guess.
I believe the first one is meant to be "her research" rather than "the research".
These vidoes are tooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo short, unlike my "too"!!
I need to know more!! science is my drug!

Either it's just colours they picked to demonstrate their ability to see UV-light, or they are aware of what colour-blindness bees have.
Why not tag with RFID's? and place sensors at the entrance and the individual flowers, You might even put a small weight sensor on the wooden piece to measure if he landed there.
i'm not sure if it's the bees or the beautiful woman, but this is fascinating.
If we had more funding! I wish we could do that...

Good stuff!
or that think you can get where you can draw things in pencil and use them as buttons, then map the buttons to the keys she has designated.
I think she sounds Scottish? But it's not an accent I can place.
Anyway, hive beasties are super-interesting to me, so this is great!
Bees are quite cute.
There are a few typos in the description. It says "he research", not "the research" and I don't quite get what "who bumblebees" means. Possibly "the bumblebees"?

Second is the best!
The argument goes that it's a study, not a science, but it's mainly just banter between physical scientists (chemists, physicists) and biologists (I'm soon to be a physicist :) )
I was watching this happen in nature today. Cool
Yes but here if the letter represents the word there is less chance of a mistake.
I've just found my new platonic love :)
Shes Adorable :)
Give me more...Can you share some of the data you've gathered and what you think it means?
Professor Bumblebee
I can't hear anything from this video, despite other youtube videos working.
because telling someone how brilliant they are because they can put a number on a bee is really what they want to hear
the research they are doing is good however it isnt perse revolutionary she isnt making miracles happen yeah shes probably doing a good job but thats about as far as it can go
her looks thats easy to compliment on you see her she wont look to much diffirent when you meet her i wager
the type of compliment doesnt matter aslong as its a geniune compliment
She is the british version of Cat from the Catrific youtube channel.
Worth a fuck.
Very cool! :-)
Bees love raves. That's what I learned.
This is fascinating ^_^

Science is hot, though. I get all sweaty just saying the world!
Works for me, and I use Chrome under Linux which has in this combination notoriously bad audio.
holy shit bees have a tongue!
You know what I hate about Brady and all his channels? Not enough uploads.
no, he's telling you to go to school to get the appropriate grades to get a degree and to specialise into bees...
maybe its Gabby who monitors bumblebees... i don't know
Is Gabby single? She seems like bee a keeper. ;)
Honey. A good source of B Vitamin
Then what is it?
I wonder what the honey tastes like?
so bees french kiss to eat?
I just had in the beginning an ad three times longer that this video. Not blaiming you, Nottingham, just pissed at RUclips.
She is so beautiful
When you think about it, it seems obvious but I didn't know that either :L
TYPO IN THE DESCRIPTION
And also tongueing holes.
Cool

smarter ewery day:D

No vested interest!?! Do you know how much of your diet is from plants that are pollinated by bees? I'd say you have quite a vested interest in them.
Do you honestly think that that woman sits there reading the comments hoping someone will compliment her on her looks?
