    Hey everyone!
    Another autumn, another road trip to Oregon and Washington…
    I don’t think I need to talk about the beauty of the landscape. It was gorgeous as always and words wouldn’t be enough to describe how it felt during our time over there. I felt very lucky to get to see it in person one more time.
    Nerdy Videographer stuff
    You probably watched a couple videos about the new Canon RF 16mm 2.8 on RUclips. Some camera dudes talking in their room with purple/blue lights behind. Giving specs, pros/cons, detailed unnecessary information for hours.
    Don’t get me wrong I watch camera gear reviews too but I DON’T listen to them. Anytime I see someone complaining about a particular gear, I feel the urge to buy and try it myself and disprove whatever that guy is saying in the video.
    Again, after watching unnecessary reviews, I decided to bring ONLY the 16mm f2.8 with me to this trip. I saw people complaining about distortion, sharpness, image quality etc. so much that I really wanted to try it myself.
    For me size, weight and price is so good that I knew I could get by with some downsides. I really don’t mind a little softness in the corner of my images or some distortion is not that of a big deal for me. Vignette is also easy to take care of.
    To be honest, this might be the lens I enjoyed using the most on RF system. I don’t like carrying bulky gear. As much as I love the 15-35mm 2.8 it just doesn’t make sense to carry it sometimes. That lens is technically the best wide angle lens I ever used, period. BUT I am selling it since I never look for perfection. It is so over rated, especially on RUclips.
    I am interested in reflecting how a particular moment in time felt, and corner sharpness is usually irrelevant when I concentrate on light and composition. I prefer a nicely designed scene filmed on a soft lens rather than a poor composition with great sharpness.
    I also like weird lens flares. This lens got me on that.
    My biggest issue during the trip was the constant rain and mist. We only had 1 sunny day out of 9. It was raining the whole time. RF 16mm is not weather sealed. I was a little scared in some situations. A shower cap and hand towel helped me go through all the crazy rain storms :) That’s how I weather seal my cameras. It is basically free. Because of the constant water droplets on the lens, some scenes came out even softer than the usual mist filter look.
    Light was changing constantly between storms. I was starting a scene with some sunshine and in 5 mins it was all dark again. I don’t think I had more trouble composing scenes back to back. Changing exposure, white balance, rain, heavy rain, white clouds, dark clouds were so difficult to deal with.
    To get 2 seconds of boat footage, I had to clean my lens so many times that I almost gave up . It turned out well at the end. No regrets working a little harder.
    Audio was also such a big pain. Rain droplets were falling on top of the mic. Due to that, most audio was useless. I tried to hide under trees or sth else to get usable audio.
    I think I used a gimbal for the first time in 2 years. I wanted some movement and planned some scenes in my mind before even going to the trip. I think my gimbal is broken. It had some crazy random shakes. I ordered the Crane M3 and really excited to get it soon. I used a slider I got on Amazon for 50 bucks as well. It was a challenge since I had to do all sliding movements manually. No motors, no controllers. It was all me taking a deep breath and concentrating on the scene. I really like slider shots a lot. instead of carrying extra lenses I had my gimbal and slider.
    For most hikes and other stuff I filmed handheld and used a table tripod when necessary. I also like that handheld look.
    It was the well deserved time off for us. We unplugged from the world, again. Had amazing time. Tried local beer, coffee and even got to eat some pear from the tree next to our cabin.
    As always, these videos are our visual journey. It is a part of our life. I probably film a scene faster than someone taking a selfie. Cameras feel like a part of my body. It is usually effortless for me to make a video on a trip. We enjoy it like the first time. Every trip teaches us something new. We come back refreshed and excited for future.
    I am glad I didn’t listen to any of the bad reviews and used this lens. I love it and I am keeping it.
    Thank you for watching and reading (if you are still reading :))
    Have a wonderful day!

    Canon RF 16mm 2.8 was used for the entire video. Pretty cool lens for the price! Let me know what you think in the comments! I also don’t want to overhype it. It is a pretty regular lens but price and weight make it a great choice for me.

    Thanks for the rad video. I ended up buying the 16mm lens after seeing it. Q: I always have a horrible noise problem when shooting log on the R5, I guess because you have to shoot at iso 800. Is this able to be corrected when editing in Resolve?

    • @barparildar
      @barparildar  2 года назад

      Hey Thanks a lot Jake! Noise in shadows occurs in all systems when shooting log if you under expose your image. With regular c-log I don't get noise since I always try to expose as bright as possible without clipping the highlights. Most of the indoor shots in this video were shot on 3600 or 6400 iso. Still noise was not that bad to deal with. Resolve full version has noise reduction. I don't have it so I don't apply any noise reduction in any of my videos.

    Hey man, love your videos. I have a question about your other videos with the X-T4. How do you usually expose for f-log? Do you over or underexpose any of the footage? I'm experimenting myself, trying to find what works best and learn. Is it easier to lift the shadows or bring down the highlights in post? Would appreciate any input from your experience with the x-t4. Cheers!

    • @barparildar
      @barparildar  2 года назад

      Hey thank you! For exposure, there is no single formula I follow. I think about each scene differently since conditions are different in almost every scenario I shoot. I do not check exposure meter. I use histogram and zebras to decide depending on how I want scene to look.
      In my experience there is not much room for highlight or shadow recovery. But if I need to chose one, I would lift shadows on X-T4.

    • @barparildar
      @barparildar  2 года назад +1

      Thank you! I am really hesitant to make A/B camera comparisons They are both amazing cameras and I think there are good uses for both for different scenarios. I mostly use R6 just because of some personal preferences. I need to shoot videos and photos quickly and also deliver them quickly if it is for a client. Canon makes this process so much faster for me. Especially for photos. Product and Portrait shots I only do minor changes. It is almost perfect straight out of camera. We have other professional jobs so don't have much time for videos and photos.

      @@barparildar Really appreciate your response. Thank you. If you don’t mind one more question. Do you find that you rely on the autofocus a lot more for video with the r6 than the xt4? Or would you say that you use manual focus the same amount on both?

    • @barparildar
      @barparildar  2 года назад

      @@ifeanyiisitor7929 I still manual focus for some shots but again it is just my personal decision. I am sure R6 can handle most of the situations pretty well. I just can't risk some moments. And answer to your question is yes since I use AF on R6 and not so much on XT4. AF performance depends on lenses, light, weather, subject etc. I am sure you can get AF performance for 2 cameras pretty close in ideal conditions.
