Amazingly, rocker Phil Collins owned one of the largest personal collections of Alamo memorabilia before he donated it to San Antonio for a permanent museum that I believe is now under construction. FYI: when I visited the Alamo in the early 1960's, it was NOTHING like it is today! It was dark and dank inside where dusty, wooden cases were scattered about and no docents/guides hovering around visitors. In fact, Jim Bowie's famous knife wasn't even in a case, but simply hung from a hook high enough up on a wall to be out of reach. Since it was still largely considered a church/shrine there was no souvenir shop and those trinkets were only hustled in nearby stores. Another thing that's different is that back then they weren't stamped "Made In China." Most of those buildings both in front of and behind the mission have also been built in the past 60 years. The small garden in the back was virtually empty, but that gnarled old tree was still there! Revisions of that old church [and it's legends] have long been a San Antonio industry, not to mention a local political Football.

yeah its changed just in my lifetime, and as you can see in the video, they are adding more of a fort look in the front. They closed some of the touristy shops (haunted house and dark ride) in front of the Alamo. I believe they said it looked tacky in front of the Alamo. Seems the road is going to be permantly closed in front of the Alamo too (my guess). Thats interesting about Phil Collins. The Alamo is really an interesting place to see, and I wanted to share an Indepth video for people that don't live in or near Texas to see.
