  • Welcome to my third Book Club.
This is a place to hear me chat about the books I’ve read or listened to on Audible, as well as discussing our book club book. I will also suggest a book that we can all read together and chat about next month.
    Books discussed :
Fresh Water for Flowers by Valerie Perrin
The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See
    Anxious People by Fredrik Backman
    Case Histories by Kate Atkinson
If you want to read along with me, the next book I have chosen is - The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
Possible future book club books :
Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier
Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
    Songbirds by Christie Lefteri
The next book club will be on 8th November.
If you would like to support me, please consider a small donation to my Kofi account. Many thanks. ko-fi.com/yarn...

Thanks, Sarah. I'm really enjoying this book club! I’m a bit behind but I listened to Case Histories on audio. I found the mysteries intriguing, but there were too many characters to keep track of. I also wasn’t keen on how many of the women were described. Can't wait to read Evelyn Hugo. I am keen on all the books for the book club. One of my goals is to read more classics.

Sarah, I am loving the book club, as others and yourself have said Case Histories was unfulfilling but I enjoyed to story. So on to the next. I have had the Seven husbands book in my to read pile for AGES 🙂‍Thanks again. 🙂🌻💕🦘

😀💕xx thanks Sarah. Great book club episode. Haven’t read case histories yet, and probably won’t. Plenty more lovely books! Am reading, however, at the moment Behind the Scenes at the Museum by the same author and loving it. Am waiting for my reservation of Fresh Water for Flowers from my library. 🥰

hello Sarah; I’ve just joined your book club suggestions and finished case histories a while back. I listened on Audible as well and was compelled to keep listening as I loved all the little descriptions Kate Atkinson used eg. as reliable as a rooster or a mouth like a prune. however like you i did not like the Jackson Brodie character and I thought the connections were not that deep or I was just looking for a deeper meaning which wasn’t there. The end was skimmed over, I wanted Olivia to be found alive and happy! I also despised the character of Julia.
I am now listening to another Kate Atkinson book; Life after Life and I’m enjoying it so much. Thank you for introducing me to this author and I look forward to reading your next selection.
    Lisa x

I read Case Histories, and while I mostly enjoyed the read (although the first three chapters were a bit of a traumatic start), I agree that the ending was unfulfilling. Based on the synopsis, I expected the three cases to be intertwined. But rather it was the three stories that had one common character (who for the most part wasn’t super vital to the story). I also found it quite odd for a female author to create Jackson Brodie as the sort-of hero of the story, but with very little heroic about it.
I enjoyed the book club very much and was eagerly awaiting your thoughts, and the thoughts of others. I have read the other comments as well. It is fun to join in this way. Thank you for taking time to organize this for all of us 😊

I’m sorry you didn’t like Jackson Brodie or enjoy Case Histories but would urge you to give this series a second chance. Jackson is an imperfect character who has been damaged by life but throughout the series you see him learn that his misogynistic attitude doesn’t help him. He also meets people who see the loveable person hidden under the spikey exterior although he still struggles to maintain close relationships. He is in some ways similar to Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitterage: grumpy and critical on the outside but kind and perceptive underneath. I’m half way through the final book in the series and will be sorry when it’s over. The connections continue across the series and names crop up that you had forgotten but I really enjoyed that aspect of Kate Atkinson’s storytelling.

Hi, Sarah. I do like this format because I enjoy hearing about what you are reading besides the book club picks. I added Lisa See’s book to my TBR. I saw that Apple+ has a documentary starting next week called The Last of the Sea Women that you might want to check out.
I felt the same way as you did about Case Histories. It took me awhile to figure out who Caroline was and I felt Lily Rose was going to be Olivia or “Caroline’s” baby. I found it hard to believe that Binky would leave Jackson all her money for not paying him for the two years he had been investigating for her and the plot that someone trying to kill Jackson turned out to be her nephew…! If I come across some of Kate Atkinson’s books though I would probably give them a chance because sometimes I don’t enjoy all the books from an author.
I am looking forward to reading the next two picks. Regarding the two future choices - I have not read anything by the Songbirds author, but it sounds really good. I did read Far From the Madding Crowd, but it was so long ago that I don’t remember the story.
Have a lovely October. Unfortunately, we are still in 100 degree temps here. 😅
    Take care,
    Elaine

Hi Sarah, I think that the positives about Case Histories were that it was easy reading and that I did want to stick with it and find out the resolution to the various stories. That said, I felt that the ending was rushed and as you described, somehow unsatisfying. Also the attitude toward some of the women (and knitting!) made uncomfortable reading at times. I think, though, I will try another of this author’s books as a number of people have recommended these. Thanks again for this book club, really enjoying it and looking forward to the next one!

I had a different experience with this book, perhaps because I listened to it on Audible. I just sort of felt swept along by it, finding that I was interested in the case histories - and the narrator was very good. However I didn’t really like Jackson Brodie and did wonder why he’d got Binky’s inheritance. I didn’t find the ending very satisfying either. I would probably give it 3 stars…
I absolutely loved Songbirds - definitely a 5-star book in my opinion!

Hi Sarah I had to give up on this book although I hate giving up on a book. I persevered until about half way through then skipped to the last few pages to see what happened. I could not warm to any of the characters and found the book just jumped about therefore you had to keep looking back.
I hope you enjoy the next book club read, I listened to this on Audible and really enjoyed it. x

Afraid I could not get on with Case histories, read the first and second case, and part of third case, but i found it too disturbing for me. Least I tried tho. So iv taken up reading Jamaica Inn, which I'm throughly enjoying. Visted the Inn few weeks ago on way down to Cornwall. Iv ordered the next club book, so will see how I get on with that one.

Hi Sarah I am really enjoying the book club and tge current format. I agree with the others that I found Case Histories difficult to follow. I had to read back to renember which character was from which account. I prefer to read books that flow better and more engaging. I felt that this book really wasn't my cup of tea. As you said I think Jackson Brodie couldve done more detective work too. I didn't finish the book but I found case histories the TV drama. I found that easier to follow as it began with Jackson and dealt with each case at a time. I have begun tge next book and so far I am really enjoying it.I used to be an avid reader but got out of the way of as life took over. . Now I have more time on my hands I am keen to get back into reading so thank you for doing this. The bookclub gives me the chance to read books that I wouldn't necessarily choose for myself. It's great to see what others think if the books too.Tganks again, take care Xx

I was so pleased to hear your review because I felt exactly the same and almost gave up on it. It started ok but seemed to get more and more confusing with all the characters. Please don’t apologise as we don’t know what a book is going to be like until we read it. I haven’t read any of the other books you have suggested. 😊

Hi Sarah! First, I also really enjoyed Fresh Water for Flowers and The Island of Sea Women.
I read Case Histories quite a while ago. I didn’t rate it on GR but I know I felt so-so about it. I did read the second in the series and liked it more. And I recently started the third because I keep hearing people talk about liking the series so much. We will see how I feel.
I would be interested to read either of the future selections and I am excited to read Jamaica Inn when that comes up.
