I have been playing for like 8 hours and still learned about a dozen things I have not known before. This video is 7 years old and still more helpful than the majority of the newer guides here on RUclips.
One thing to note on the topic of early food: Hunting Spears. Hunting spears are cheap, fairly powerful, and if a monster is killed with a hunting spear it will almost always drop raw meat. They're an easy way to hunt mobs for meat before you obtain your first bow.
great video! i've been stumbling through the game, although enjoying every minute, without knowing many of these basic controls. i'm looking forward to getting back into it with what i've learned, thanks!
The thing with the armor is that it will go into its respective armor slot if available. If there's already an item there (like clothing), it'll register the slot as filled and will not replace it.
+Doran's ring Just pirate the game first man, I did that for the beta (yes, all 2,5 years) And I decided to buy it because the betas were so damn good.
+Doran's ring Yeah constantly updating is a pain, and you can still make servers. Just no connection through Steam. But I'd say you pirate 1.0 (or 1.4 if available) try that out for one playthrough, and then decide if you really want the game.
+Reksie I did already and I love the game but the thing is I can't buy things online because my fucked up country dosent "allow" it so unless someone generous enough gets it for me I won't be guaranteed to be playing it all the time or keep my saves and what not
Thank you for this. I only played during really early access when it had very little and coming back now I needed guidance on how to stop dying every time I go exploring on the first planet. This video is well paced and well narrated.
i always deforestate 50% of the starting planet for wood Minor Spoilers about the final boss: Earth was not destroyed by The Ruin, but me by destrying the entire ecosystem
I've been playing Starbound for a bit and just watched this for fun, and I learned that you can click the x key to change the hotbar. I'm surprised I didn't know that.
I got what I needed a minute and a half in, thanks. I haven't played in years (August 16, 2016 according to Steam, so just a bit after this video, haha), and was confused by the new inventory system because I was so used to the old 10-slot system from the beta. Thanks! Not entirely sure why I quit less than a month after release, though...
I started on Hardcore mode and only died once very early on because I had no idea what I was doing. I started another hardcore character and I love it. I did the first boss fight and it was so intense because I had never done before and there was no much tension compared to being able to insta-respawn. I went back to the hub and took the quest from the penguin. I had a rocket launcher by this point and I was doing well, but then a giant damn UFO appeared and I hauled ass back to the teleporter. The giant UFO saucer was raining hot death on me to the last second LOL
Don't say torch when you mean flashlight. It's okay if you're just playing the game or something and it's clear what you mean, and I understand that apparently many British(?) people will refer to a flashlight as a torch, but in this case it's ambiguous. You could have meant _actual_ torches, which as players will realize when they try it out, actually take a two-handed slot and won't work alongside a shortsword. The salve and bandage seem to heal the same amount of health, but the salve is much slower. So the difference is not the severity of the wound, but the immediacy of the healing. If you're down to your last sliver of health in the middle of a fight, use a bandage to heal quickly so you'll survive the fight. If you notice that you're down to your last sliver of health _after_ a fight, and there's no monsters around, you can safely use a salve and heal up the same amount of damage, but more slowly. Really, healing items are more for major injuries anyway. Minor scratches are best healed with food (fill the hunger bar completely to get the Full Belly buff, which slowly heals you but also prevents further ingestion of food). Swords have short combos if you spam-click. Shortswords have a second hit in the combo, broadswords have a second and third hit in the combo.
Not on survival difficulty. You have to be high enough that you have the surface background and not have any background blocks in the way. It's not actually difficult to get out from under the ground like that thankfully. Only casual(which I'll never play because it's also the easiest setting) lets you beam anywhere.
Even with mods I'll never touch casual. To me, it's a mark of sin, of major shame. Many other games casual makes the game impossible to lose likewise(looking at you SC2), or equivilent settings(like tutor in MOO2 makes the AI not even research any technologies or build any more then titanium armored frigates). It's just a huge combination of preference/experiences. Honestly difficulty settings are archaic, and starbound is also a game in which you can control how high the stakes are with survival: Just don't carry all of your important materials with you. And 30% pixels lost on death? Well, it gives me incentive to spend them on things like fuel or durasteel bars ect.
That's fine. You hold left shift with your matter manipulator or a block in hand and then you can mine or place single blocks. It also makes you walk slower if you arnt holding a block or your manipulator
+NEBB pieispie- It makes you walk slower regardless of what you're holding. The way you phrased it implies that it only makes you walk slower when you're not holding a block or the matter manipulator. I'm sure you meant the correct thing, but you expressed it wrongly. Just wanted it to be absolutely clear for anyone reading this comment thread.
In my experience so far, the hunting spear seems way better than the bow. Since the crafting materials for it are trivial, I feel like the bow's infinite use doesn't close the gap.
no, but they have the advantage of glowing, and they're guns get stronger with your armour, so make armour first! also, you can probably find melee weapons in chests, so look around.
+Just Gray All races have a weak light aura around them. Do novakids have a stronger light aura than other races, or did you simply not know that other races have it too?
If you arnt sure what the runes mean, you can get a book that tells you from a place you find near the treasures troves store in the arc, which I believe you unlock after collecting the hylotl artifact, and returning to the arc. You have to get two wheel pieces and then buy the book with the wheel pieces. The wheel pieces are found In the one hatch in the erchius mining facility, and somewhere in the apex mission. I forget how to unlock the hatch to them though.
Hakim mosegi explore your first world. They will either be deep underground, or you can find it in this mine area. (youll know when you get there because a NPC will be near tents and a campfire, near them is an entrance to a mine.) You have to kill a boss to get 20, or find them in crates in the mine.
Kinda wish Starbound had more simplified crafting tables. Metal, wood, fabric, etc. It's annoying trying to go through three or four crafting tables for weapons alone or just as msny for armor/clothes.
Okay, my hotbar doesn't show, my health doesn't show, and it won't tell me what materials I need to craft something. I just bought Starbound I need helppppp ;v;
The only person who can play this game without getting infuriatingly confused is a person who made it. Quests dont tell you how to complete them, that "x" feature was never pointed out, storage locker never pointed out, which items are one handed and which aren't isnt pointed out, etc etc etc etc the more i play this game the more i hate it.

Needs more likes, great tip, thank you!
your voice is perfect for documentaries

Who’s here in 2020 new to an old game you have fallen in love with
Fixing to try and play this again after two years, thank you!
great video! i've been stumbling through the game, although enjoying every minute, without knowing many of these basic controls. i'm looking forward to getting back into it with what i've learned, thanks!
This game is better than No Man's Lie
Scitch2781 grow up
Scitch2781 he misspelled one word.

the game looks better than terraria (witch i currently have)
Yea, I prefer this game over Terraria dou
This is the BEST tutorial i've ever seen! Keep it up!
Just got this game and this tutorial has been so so helpful, thank you so much! I'm really enjoying the game x
This is a really good guide for getting started, i got a bit discouraged in the beginning because i did not know what to do, but this helps a lot...
This video has been a real help thank you very much for making it
Love this game and the endless amount of stuff in it
The thing with the armor is that it will go into its respective armor slot if available. If there's already an item there (like clothing), it'll register the slot as filled and will not replace it.
I'm pretty sure that you drop all food on death on survival
Yeah, I believe so.
You drop food, but not seeds and I don't think you drop ingredients for cooking
succinct, useful, and well-done. Thanks!
oh shit, I bought the game today, this is gonna help!
Buy me the game and own my soul forever...
+Doran's ring Just pirate the game first man, I did that for the beta (yes, all 2,5 years) And I decided to buy it because the betas were so damn good.
+Reksie I did that for the beta for like 3 months (2014) but what about the updates and the dedicated servers ;-;
+Doran's ring Yeah constantly updating is a pain, and you can still make servers. Just no connection through Steam. But I'd say you pirate 1.0 (or 1.4 if available) try that out for one playthrough, and then decide if you really want the game.

I just got the game yesterday. So thank you for this very helpful video! :3
Thank you for this. I only played during really early access when it had very little and coming back now I needed guidance on how to stop dying every time I go exploring on the first planet. This video is well paced and well narrated.
Love it! Just finished the Big Ape boss fight. (I am so addicted)
Thank you just bought the game wanted to give it a go and this really helped 😄
im at durasteel tier and me and me friend didnt really knew about that X swap hot bar its really helpful ! thank you :D
Thanks for the video, it has helped a bunch. Pretty new to Starbound xD
Thank you!! This guide helped me a lot!!
i always deforestate 50% of the starting planet for wood
Minor Spoilers about the final boss:
Earth was not destroyed by The Ruin, but me by destrying the entire ecosystem
Lol
This was super helpful, of all the stupid minor things the fact that that thing next to quest log is a compass might have been the most helpful.
I've been playing Starbound for a bit and just watched this for fun, and I learned that you can click the x key to change the hotbar. I'm surprised I didn't know that.

This guy narrates like roald dahl with a british voice, love it !
Very good quick and helpful quide keep it up lads :)
If you drag the food on your character you will eat it instantly, it is better and faster then drop it in the hot bar
Thank you so much man! I knew there were an easier way of eating.
+Ingo Nikot Oh thanks for the tip m8 :D
he showed that in the video too. (and you can do this with every consumable item)
Thanks man. I played Terraria for ages but this doesn't really explain too much. Seems like it will be fun once I get further in.
Great guide, helped me out a lot!
at last easy to follow and detailed thank you
This helped a lot thanks for the vid!
Rope is actually more then an ingredient, but a grappling hook a la Metroid or Ninja Rope in Worms. Gives you lots of mobility !
Hello! I love your content randomize user!
Subscribed! Thanks for the help

ye in casual mode...
LaughingAlex Only mode I'll play is casual. The game is wonky as is, I won't add to it. Besides, mods.
Even with mods I'll never touch casual. To me, it's a mark of sin, of major shame. LaughingAlex That's nice. I suck at the game so I will always die, even on Casual.
Sorry my stupid question but how can I put one block down instead of 2x2?
That's fine. You hold left shift with your matter manipulator or a block in hand and then you can mine or place single blocks. It also makes you walk slower if you arnt holding a block or your manipulator
+NEBB pieispie-

Holy shit your spoiler ape has the same exact armor, race, and color as my precious character I played on star bound
Good video anyway thanks for the upload man
Great guide!
In my experience so far, the hunting spear seems way better than the bow. Since the crafting materials for it are trivial, I feel like the bow's infinite use doesn't close the gap.
Thank you .... you did a very good job
Nice video!
awesome review!
Nice guide and I love your voice
so can novakids not make melee weapons at the start i can only make basic crappy guns
no, but they have the advantage of glowing, and they're guns get stronger with your armour, so make armour first!
also, you can probably find melee weapons in chests, so look around.
Their* They're means they are.
+Just Gray
All races have a weak light aura around them. Do novakids have a stronger light aura than other races, or did you simply not know that other races have it too?
Thanks :) very helpful
great video earned a sub
randomise do u know anything about rune decoders in starbound
If you arnt sure what the runes mean, you can get a book that tells you from a place you find near the treasures troves store in the arc, which I believe you unlock after collecting the hylotl artifact, and returning to the arc. +NEBB pieispie- I said treasures troves. I meant treasured troves. Damn autocorrect
One difference that isn’t cosmetic between races: Novakid can craft guns, everyone else crafts melee weapons
I know im from the future lol😅 but if you still know some things about the game, do different races have different style ships ?
Thanks for the video! :-)
nice guide!
Thank you!
Did you know if you clicked alt you can see useable items
Help me find Core fragments
Hakim mosegi explore your first world. They will either be deep underground, or you can find it in this mine area. (youll know when you get there because a NPC will be near tents and a campfire, near them is an entrance to a mine.) You have to kill a boss to get 20, or find them in crates in the mine.

Kinda wish Starbound had more simplified crafting tables. Metal, wood, fabric, etc.
It's annoying trying to go through three or four crafting tables for weapons alone or just as msny for armor/clothes.
I like your accent! Thanks for this video!
i cant beleave that i rushed in missions and quests blindly without any crafting or getting armed dammit and that's why i was dying all the tiime!
That was pretty good :>
Acacia Louvegrise OI, like your profile pic o3o
wah, thank you :>
Okay, my hotbar doesn't show, my health doesn't show, and it won't tell me what materials I need to craft something.
I just bought Starbound I need helppppp ;v;
Never mind the ingredients are showing now- but still my health and hot bar are missing.
Neon Ocelot try restarting the game. starbound is a little wonky on newer computers
The funny thing is you sound like chippy, the commentator on the game similar to this
Terraria?
I went survival mode and I hate it. its hard to get food at the start. But if you did casual you would have loads of food and no reason to have it
good stuff
You sound like Lord Shaxx from Destiny XD
Hello User, can you give me a permission to use your guide videos at my channel for translate theese to russian?
I and the wiki beated the game, all i searched was rare pets, tenants, and tiers
i cant craft pickaxe
The only person who can play this game without getting infuriatingly confused is a person who made it. Quests dont tell you how to complete them, that "x" feature was never pointed out, storage locker never pointed out, which items are one handed and which aren't isnt pointed out, etc etc etc etc the more i play this game the more i hate it.
thx m8
I got the 1,000th like!
you sound like the sargon of akkad
Holy shit you're right
i have this game on steam and i am going to play with my dad and sister im player one one player
I'm pretty sure I came as soon as he said "inventory".
And also, progrresion in starbound is seemingly endless which is probably true
Step 1: drink soda
Casual mode in starbound is a sunday drive
