    I didn’t have the heart to watch this interview at first. Because I felt that could have been me, a naturalized US citizen, single woman and mom working in China, always walking on the thin ice… I’m so so proud of Cheng Lei that the communist didn’t break her. May she be blessed with freedom of speech all her life.

    Thank you Cheng Lei for having the courage to survive and share your story. I am profoundly sad that I will never get to visit the wonders of China. Half of my family are Chinese and its people and culture are incredibly important to me. To be exiled from your second homeland is a pain deeply held by too many people . Thank you also to the ABC and Sarah Ferguson for sharing this story in such a respectful and gentle manner.

      Think about Julian Assange , isn't UK is AUS's good friend? You go to certain country, you follow their law, my father in law is Aussie , he had been to China for many times. If you compare the crime rate worldwide, China is very safe, much safer than AUS and USA. If you don't go to Rome, you would never know how Rome looks. Western media always portraits how terrible China is, but why would I travel freely all the time, by the way I'm a Chinese living in western countries for more than 10 years.

      Agreed the stupidity of Marise Payne going on air to demand an "investigation into Covid" was palpable. The resulting sanctions that destroyed whole industries and put this poor woman in jail could have been avoided. Scotty from marketing wanted a headline instead he got years of grief for Chinese Australians and many industries including wine, beef, barley, coal and lobsters....

US ranks 16. look it up. if you are in hong kong feeling unhappy try america or uk. you dont feel safe venturing out after dark. i dont think hong kong will keep you there and you are perfectly free to choose to leave. you will be allowed if you find a country that will accept you.

      Cheng was charge and confessed to espionage and was sentenced for 3 years.
      In contrast, Assange published war crimes committed by United Snakes (not a crime) and spent 7 years in the Bolivian Embassy as an asylum seeker, was targeted for assassination by the US government, placed in Belmarsh Prisn for 4 years and is facing a 175 year sentence in the US.
      A guilty person gets all the sympathy from the western world because China was involved but an innocent person gets forgotten and left to rot in jail because US is involved.🙄

    Fact is she felt she shouldn't have shared the state secrets with someone working for a different organisation. On a hindsight when asked, she agreed she shouldn't. What matters is also she was not physically abused and had nothing much to bad the interrogators other than the emotional strain. Her plight was made worse by Scomo’s arrogant attitude towards China. At the end of it, importantly, she was deported. Thanks to the efforts of the Albanese administration and Penny Wong, she was subsequently released and deported. Albanese did what that puppy dog Morrison couldn't do.

    My heart breaks for Cheng Lei. Being a journalist shouldn't result in situations like this; it takes enormous courage to be a journalist that is critical of China (or not even critical, but just honest in general). It's a great shame. It's a huge shame for China itself. The country has remarkable history and a beautiful culture and language; the CCP is a cancer on the country.

    This is a problem when u are charged with espionage. Every country in the world does the same. U are lucky that only jailed for 3 years. In US, many had been more than hellish for decades in jail. Australia treated u well because u are not charged in this place. If u are charged in Australia, same hell for you or perhaps u will feel the hell for decades too. Every country governments and politicians are very scary, almost all civil workers tends to inflict the victims more damages to obtain credits from their bosses.

    Will never set foot in China , I hear they do interigate passengers at the airport ,if you miss connecting flight you are up the creek without a paddle, they don’t and won’t speak English at airport. It’s now one country I will never visit. So good you are back in Australia and reunited with your husband and children❤❤.

This was critical information from the Premier's report ie. no large stimulus package and higher unemployment forecast. In other words time-critical information of value in world financial circles. There are two questions remaining, who requested the information and how much was she offered for it.
